UNITED STATES PA ENTJQ F G V HENRY HARaIson-TURN R, cemeteri s; Mrmvns o'ra j CHAIR.
To all whom it may concern: Y
B "it known that I, HENRY HARRISQN TURNER, a citizenof. the United States, and a resident of Northfield, in the county of Rice and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Chairpof which the following is a full, clear, and exact descr1ption.
My invention relates to chairs of the. reclining type. v I e The object thereof is to provide a simple, convenient, strong and inexpensive .recllning chair which can be easily and quickly placed in any inclined position by the person occupying the chair, or transformed into a chair having a synchronized swingingbackand leg support.
With the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the application, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and Figure l is a side'el'evation of my invention; Fig. 2 is a. fragmentary elevation of the chair partly in section showing the structure ofthe locking mechanism; Fig. 3 is .a sideelevation showing the back and leg support in a position transforming the chair into a Morris chair; Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line-H, Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a plan view of the crank for the locking mechanism.
Referring to the drawings, 5 represents the seat frame, which maybe i1310"ld.8d,"if desired, with a spring netting or a solid seat. Rigid with the seat frame 5 are front and rear legs 6 and 7 respectively. The seat frame 5 with the legs 6 and 7 form the seat section, to which is hinged the back and leg support. The longitudinal members 8 of the back portion of the chair are hinged to the sides of the seat frame 5 adjacent the rear legs 7. The longitudinal members 8 are hinged to said seat between their ends, with the lower curved end 9 of said longitudinal members extending below the seat frame 5.
Hinged to the seat frame 5 in front of the leg 6 is a leg support frame 10. The frame 10, forming the leg support, is connected to the frame of the back portion by Specification of Letters Patent.

a sector hinged with one end to the lower extremity of one of the longitudinal members 8, The other extremity of said sector is hinged to the frame 10. As shown, a yoke 12 is provided on the frame to facilitate the connection. 7 s To maintain the back support fixed relatively to the seat section portion the leg 2 within the limit of the swinging movement of said back section and leg support,-the
Trhese notches come .in register with a pin 14 carried by a yoke 15 which is pivoted to thei legfi. The engagement of the pin. with the notches is controlled from one of the 5 sector vl1 provided with spaced notches 13. 1
.necte'd by a rod 20-to a bearn21 mounted in the arm support, 16. The free end 'of the beam .21 is close to the free'extremity of the arm support 16, so that the same can be easily operated with the fingers extending over thearm' support. Normally the weight of the rod 18 and the yoke 15 tends to" engage said pin 14 with :an'y'ofwthe notches coming in register with the pin. This tendency keeps the free endof the beam 21 away from the'bottom of the arm support 1 6., and, by moving saidfree 1 end ofsa'id beam .21 toward the :arm support, the pin' lt is disengaged from the notch of" the sector 11, and, consequently, the back portion and the-legsupport are freepto swing. By rethe first notch coming in register therewith, when it is desired to have the back portion and the leg support free to swing, the pin 14 is disengaged from the sector 11 by maintaining the free end of the beam 21 against the bottom of the arm support 16 by a latch 22 provided on the under side of the arm support 16 where the beam 21 is provided. It will also be noted from the drawings that all of the members forming the chair are of channeled iron, so as to give great rigidity and lightness to the structure; but it is understood that any other material of suitable shape and character can be used With the same result.
engage' nal members of the leg support 10 are provided with a telescoping extension 23, which is normally maintained within the leg support 10 by coil springs 24:, which anchors said foot rest 23 to the leg support. VVhenit is desired to use the leg support, the person, occupying the chair engages the foot rest -to which the; invention pertains, and while I have described the principle of operation, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I
desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: y
1. In a chair, a seat section, a back portion mounted to swing on'the rear part of eaid seat section, a leg support mounted to swing in the front ofsaid seat'section,-a sector connecting the back portion to the leg support, said sector having spaced'notches, and means normally tending to engage said notcheswhereby said back portion and leg support may be locked to said seat section in different predetermined positions.
Q. In a chair, a seat section, a back portion mounted to swing in the rear of the said seat section, said back portion having a part thereof extending under the seat section, a leg support mounted to swing in the front of said seat section, a sector connecting the part of the back portion extending below the seat to said leg support, said sectorhaving Copies of this patent may be obtained for spaced notches, and locking means normally tending to engage a notch of said sector.
, 8. In a chair, .a seat section, a back portion mounted to swing in the rear of the seat section, a leg support mounted to swing in the front of said seat section, a sector connecting the back portion to the leg support, said sector having spaced notches, locking means normally tending to engage the notches of said sector, means for placing said locking mechanism into inoperative position. v
4. In a chair, a seat section, a back portion, aleg support, said back portion and leg support being mounted to swing, a sector connecting the back portion to the leg support whereby said back portion and leg sup port swing in unison, an arm support con necting the back portion to the seat section, and lockingmeans adapted to engage, the sector in predetermined places for locking 'the swinging movement of the back and foot rest.
5. In a chair, a seat section, a swinging back portion, a leg support mounted to swing, means connecting the back portion to the leg support, arm supports connecting the back portion to the seat section and adapted to participate in the movement of the back portion, a lock engaging the means connecting the back portion to the leg support whereby the same are prevented from swinging, a crank, a rod connecting the crank to the look, a lever associated with one of the arm supports, a rod connecting said lever to the crank, and means associated with the lever for rendering the same inoperative. p
In testimony whereof I have signed my 'name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY HARRISON TURNER.
