T0 all v'whom t may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. BRUMDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Voting- Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification:
My invention relates to voting machines and has for its object ythe provision of an improved voting machine system whereby a single counting mechanism may vloe employed, one for each candidate, actuated however by a pluralityof setting or controlling mechanisms so that more than one voter may voteat the same time, thus to facilitate voting and avoid the necessity of hurrying the voters. It is rusually customary to have but one voting machine in a booth and under these co itions the voters vmust await their turn in-l rder to opera-te the machine.
With my improved voting machine a plurality of voters may set the device at the same time, mean's being' provided so that when the nal act of registriation is done by either controlling device, that this entire registration from any other device maybe held in abeyance. l
As will be readily apparent my invention is applicable to both mechanical or electrical operated voting machines, but for the sake of illustration I have shown my improved machine herein as being o erated and controlled electrically. In this form I prefer to have a plurality of key boards or controlling mechanisms arranged in parallel or multiple relation which are adapted to act upon one xset of counting mechanisms, means being provided to prevent the actual simultaneous attempt at registration of two controlling mechanisms.
I will explain this form which my invention may take more particularly by referring to the accompanying-drawing illustrating diagrammatically a voting machine equipped in accordance with my invention.
I show my nvcntion herein as arranged to accommodate two voters, but it will of course be understood that more devices can be readil'v added in multiple it' desired in the manner shown i'or these two devices. I have also .shown each deviee as pern'iitting the selection ol' but one. of two canrglidates, it
being readily understood that the device can accommodate more series of two candidates, in which case there will also be additional counting mechanism, there naturally being one counting mechanism for each candidate. As stated, I show but two counters 1 and 2, there being but two candidates to be voted for. There are two sets of controlling mechan'isms A and B each controlling mechanism being complete for one voter and each having complete apparatus to control registrations to be made upon the counters 1 and 2. Each controlling -mechanism A and B is for the use of a voter. In the operation of the controlling device A, for instance, I provide two keys 3 and- 4, one corresponding to each candidate, each controlling key havlng an associated lamp, respectively the lamps 5 and 6. There is also provided for each key a relay, respectively the relays 7 and 8.` These relays serve to place the circuits leading to the counters 1 and 2 in .conl dition ready for registration so that this registrationmay be effected by the movement ot a turnstile 9, for instance, as the voter is leaving the booth withinwhich is placed the mechanism A.
Assuming now that the voter wishes to vote forthe candidate represented by the key 3, adepression of this key closes a circuit which extends from the negative terminal of the battery 22 by way of conductor 10, switch arm 11, normal contact l2, con- /ductor 13, resistance 14, key 3, contact 15,
conductor 16, winding of the relay 7, conductor 18, switch arm 19, normal contact 20, conductor 21, to the positive terminal of the battery .22. A It will thus be seen that current is supplied to the relay 7 which draws up its armatures 23 and 24 respectively, thereby completing a locking circuit from this relay which extends from the positive terminal of the battery by the same path as before, then by way of the armature 24, conductor 25, conductorl, contacts 12 and 11 to the negative terminal of the battery. The relay 7 thus remains locked up. At
the same time circuit is completed through the lamp 5, from the positive terminal of the battery, by way of conductor 2G, conductors 1G and 25, to the negative terminal of the battery. The actuation ot' the relay 7 completes a circuit which extends from the turnstile by way ot the conductor 27, through the counter actuating magnet 2s',

and by way 'of conductor 10 to the switching spring 11. Thus it will be seen that the' cir-i cuit leading to the counter 1 is lcomplete and I this counter will be actuated the moment the turnstile is operated to close circuit through this turnstile or gate 49v With'lthe spring 11.
Now in order to preventsuccessive actuation by one voter of the key-s 3v and 4 so that `the voter sets'the circuit to'hoth counters,
I provide-a step-by-step element 30, which etc.. Thusthe actua- 4 tion of the key 3 causes a movement of the armature 38, thereby to operate the step-by.
step element one step sothat it engages contact 32. Now should the key 4 be depressed before a restoration of the entire control mechanism, then the device 30 will be stepped around to the next contact post, re-
spectively the contact post 33, and thereupon a circuit is established from thepositive tere locking circuit to whatever relays 7 or 8 have been locked in position so that the entire device is restored to normal without registration.
Now to guard against the contingency ot' having two keys 3 and 4 operate at the same time to avoid the regulating influence of the step-by-step device 30, I provide the relay 36. This relay 3G is marginal and is not actuated if but one key 3 is depressed because the resistance 1.4 does not permit enough current to pass through this relay 36 to actuate its armature 46. "When however two keys 3 and 4 are depressed simultaneously, two circuits in parallel including respectively the resistances 14 and 4T are included with the circuit leading to the relay 36 and thereupon it attracts its armature so as to close a circuit which can be traced from negative battery by way ot conductors 10 and'13, through the armature 46. release magnet 39, to the positive battery, thus ac tuating the release magnet 39 and breaking the circuit to the relays 7 and 8.
From this it will be apparent that but one its arm'31 is adapted successively'to engage contactpoints 32, 33,-.v

control station B is exactly the'sameas that associated vwith the control station A andy the relays 7 and 8 of the mechanism B 'con-i trol ,the counters 1 and 2 just the same as the relays 7 and 8 of the niechanisrn..l 'lhusfeach control mechanism can actuate the counters.` Now it will be readily a parent that the registrations however shou d not be simultaneous, and one of the many' forms of mechanism which can be employed to perform this result is illustrated herein as consisting of means to control the turnstiles or gates 9 and 48 leading respectively to the booths containing the devices A. and B. Of course it is only at the instant that Vfour '-.parties yinstead of two which would e ool one voter leaves the booth that registration 'from other devices is prevented so that the saving of time in having a plurality of voters set thecontrol mechanisms is great, even though simultaneous registration is prevented. ATo this end the gates 9 and 48 are each controlled by arms 49 pivoted at 50 and controlled by magnets 51. Each turnstile also controls a switch element 52 and the connection with its contact 53. Now whenever a turnstile 9 for instance is operated into the dotted position, to cause a registration, circuit is closed between the elements and 53, thereby energizing all of the magnets'l from the battery 54 and actuating the arms 49. The arm 49 of the element 9 will not be moved as the gate 9 is in its path, but the arm 49 of the gate 48 will be moved into its alternative position, thus preventing movement of the gate 48 until the gate 9 is again restored to normal to open the circuit between the elements 52 and From what has been thus explained it is thought my invention will be entirely clear, namely that mechanism is provided whereby a single system ot' counting mechanisms may be used by a multiplicity ot' voters, means llaving however thus described one form which my invention may take, what I claimr as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A voting machine having a plurality of counters one for each candidate, a plurality of counter controlling devices, each said device having mea-ns to control each of said counters aforesaid, and electric means for preventing attempted simultaneous actuation of said counters by said devices.
2. A voting machine having a plurality of counters one for each candidate, a plurality of countercontrolling devices, each` said device including a complete key board for said candidates and having means to control each of said counters aforesaid, and electric meansfor preventing attempted simultaneous actuation of said counters by said devices.
3. A voting rmachine having a plurality of counters one for each candidate, a plurality of counter controlling devices, each said device having electromagnetic means to control each of said counters aforesaid, and means for preventing attempted simultaneousV actuation of said counters by said devices.
4. A voting machine having a plurality of counters one for each candidate, a plurality of counter controlling devices, each said device including a complete key board for said candidates and having electromagnetic means to control each of said counters aforesaid, and means for preventing attempted simultaneous actuation of said counters by said devices.
5. A voting machine having a plurality of counters one for each candidate, a plurality of counter controlling devices, each said device having means to control each said counters aforesaid, switching means associated with each device interposed between said devices and said counters to control the siinultaneous actuation of selected counters by the 'control means of each device, and means for preventing attempted simultaneous actuation of said counters by said devices.
6. A voting machine having a plurality of counters one for each candidate, a plurality of counter controlling devices, each said device including a complete key board for said candidates and having means to control each of said counters aforesaid, switching -means associated with each device interposed between said devices and said counters to control the simultaneo-us actuation of selected counters by the control means of each device, and means for preventing attempted simultaneous actuation of said counters by said devices.

A votingmachine having a plurality of counters one for each candidate, a plurality of counter controlling devices, each said device having electromagnetic means to control'each of said counters aforesaid, switching means associated with each device interposed between said devices and said counters to control the simultaneous actuation of se lected counters by the control means of each device, and means for preventing attempted simultaneous actuation of said counters by said devices.

A voting machine having a plurality of counters one for each candidate, a plurality of counter controlling devices, each said device including a complete key board for said candidates and having electromagnetic means to control each of said counters aforesaid, switching means associated with each device interposed between said devices and said counters to control the simultaneous actuation of selected counters by the control means ofv each device, and means for preventing attempted simultaneous actuation of said counters by said devices.
9. A voting machine having a plurality of counters one for each candidate, a plurality of counter controlling devices, each said device having means to control each of said counters aforesaid, gate controlled means associated with each device interposed between said devices and said counters to control the simultaneous actuation of selected counters by the control means of each device, and means for preventing at tempted 'simultaneous actuation of said counters by said devices, said last aforesaid means including gate controlled mechanism.

A voting machine having a plurality of counters on'e for each candidate, a plurality of counter controlling devices, each said device including a complete key board for said candidates and-v having means to control each of said counters aforesaid, gate controlled means associated ywith each device interposed between said devices and said counters to control the simultaneous actuation of selected counters by the control nieans of each device, and means for preventing attempted simultaneous actuation of said counters by said devices, said last aforesaid means including gate controlled mechanism.-

A voting machine having a plurality of counters one for each candidate, a plurality of counter controlling devices, each said device having electromagnet means to control each of said counters aforesaid, gate controlled means associated with each device interposed between said device and said counters to control the simultaneous actuation of selected counters by the control means of each device, and means for preventing attempted simultaneous actuation of said counters by said devices, said last aforesaid means including gate controlled mechanism.
12. A voting machine having a plurality of counters one for each candidate, a plurality of counter controlling devices, each controlled mechanism.
