FRANK 1B. HALL, OF BERWYN, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOB/ TO THE NATIONAL MALLEABLE GASTINGS COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OI-IIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
SPOOL-WASHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 27, 1915.
Application filed September 22, 1914. Serial No. 862,896.
Berwyn, Cook county, Illinois have in vented a new and Improved Spool-Washer,
of which the following is a specification, ref-- erence being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan of one of the halves or parts of my improved washer; Fig. 2 is an elevation thereof; Fig. 8 is a section on lines IIIIII of Fig. 1 showing the two parts assembled; Fig. r is a section on lines IVIV of Fig. 1 showing the two parts secured. together, and Fig. 5 is a perspective of one of the parts.
My invention relates to washersof the spool type and consists in making the washer of two complementary and similar parts, thereby eliminating the necessity of the use of lateral cores in the process of manufacture, which results in greater accuracy in casting and in decreasing the cost of manufacture.
My invention also consists in the construction and cooperation of the parts which I shall hereinafter describe and claim.
Referring to the drawings, my improved washer consists in two complementary parts of similar design, and hence I have designated the various parts with similar reference numerals. Each part has a base 2 which may be either the top or bottom of the washer, having a collar 3 about the bolt hole l. Extending radially from the collar 3 are the ribs or flanges 5, 6, 7, 8 and9. The collar 3 and the ribs 5, 6, 8 and 9 are of the same height and, with the base 2, con-, stitute one half the thickness of the com-.
pleted washer. lhe rib 7 is twice the height of the other ribs and has upon its upper face a lug or boss 10. Diametrically opposite the boss 10, and at the same distance from the bolt hole 4, is an aperture 11 of slightly larger diameter than the boss 10, extending through the base plate 2.
To assemble the washer the two halves are placed together with their ribs 5, 6, 8 and 9 abutting, and with the rib 7 of one part bearing against the inner face of the base 2 of the other part. As the boss 10 and aperture 11 are diametrically opposite each other on each part, the bosses 10 will fitinto the apertures 11 on opposite parts and will protrude slightly therethrough. With the two parts firmly held in this position, the bosses 10 are hammered until they spread I and rivet over into the apertures 11. The
edges of the apertures on the outer sides of the parts are slightly beveled or rounded, to give the bosses a firmer grip when they are upset. In Fig. 4 I have shown one of the bosses 10 merely entered in an aperture 11. and the other of the bosses upset and interlocked in the corresponding aperture 11. When the washer is thus assembled the semi-circular notches 12 and 13 in the ribs 8 and 9 of one part will overlie the correspondingnotches 12 and 13 in the ribs 8 and 9 of the other part and will thereby form circular openings through these ribs. These openings are intended to permit the insertion of a wire therethrough, so that the washer may be placed in the desired position and be held there by the wire until the washer is secured by a bolt.
Washers constructed in accordance with my invention are particularly intended for use on bolts or tie-rods, either as spacer blocks between'beams or in pockets or recesses where nuts cannot be conveniently applied. In the latter cases the use of a washer embodying my invention enables the nut to be applied in a position in which it is possible to operate upon it with a Wrench.
It is obvious that various modifications may be made in the construction which I have shown and described herein.
What I claim is:
1. A washer consisting of two complementary parts, each part comprising a base, and a plurality of radially-disposed ribs upon said base, one of said ribs having a boss thereon adapted to interlit and be riveted into an aperture in the base of the other part.
2. A washer consisting of two complementary parts, each part comprising a base, a collar upon the inner face of the base, and radially-disposed ribs upon said base, one of said ribs having an extension thereon adapted to interfit and be riveted into an aperture on the other part.
3. A washer consisting of two complementary parts, each part comprising a base, and a plurality of radially-disposed ribs of the same height upon said base, adapted to bear against corresponding ribsupon the other part, the said parts being secured together by a projection and slot "engagement.
" 4. A Washer consisting of two complemen tary parts, each partcomprising a base, and
- a plurality of radially-disposed ribs of the same height and a rib of different height upon said base, the ribsof the same height being adapted to bear against corresponding ribs upon the other part, and the rib of dif- :terent height carrying means for interlocking'with the base of the other part.
:tary parts, each 15.
5. A Washer consisting of two complemenpart comprising a base,
radially disposed ribs upon said base, and a FRANK B. HALL.
