DRESSER-AND TRUER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 1915.
Application filed February 27, 1914. Serial No. 821,563.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILBER E. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wheel Dressers and Truers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to grinding apparatus designed particularly for use in grinding and truing grinding wheels, the object of the invention being to provide a grinding apparatus by means of which dental and other grinding wheels may be easily, conveniently and rapidly dressed and trued.
A further object of the invention is to provide a support for holding a grinding wheel to bedressed and trued at the prop-er angle, and which is particularly designed for the use of dentists, and which may be employed for bringing the grinding wheel in contact with a revolving lathe wheel, so that the grinding wheel will be revolved, and, due to its friction with the lathe wheel, dressed or shaped and trued. The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a view in end elevation showing the device employed in conjunction with a lathe wheel. .Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the bearing bracket, showing the spindle of the grinding wheel mounted therein.
In carrying my invention into practice I provide a suitable base 1 having a socket 2 to adjustably 1'eceive the lower end of a standard 3, which is adapted to be secured in position by a set screw or other clamping medium 4.
The standard 3 is provided at its upper end with a supporting bracket l, disposed at a desired angle thereto, said bracket being bifurcated to provide upper and lower bearing bosses 5 and 6, the bosses 5 being provided with a bearing opening 7 extending entirely therethrough and the boss 6 with a bearing socket 8 disposed in alinement with said bearing opening.
The bearing opening and socket are disposed preferably at an oblique angle to the standard and are designed to receive a stem or spindle 9 carrying the grinding wheel 10 which is to be dressed and trued, the bearing opening and passage being designed to allow the stem or spindle to rotate freely therein.
In practice, the device may be employed for dressing and truing grinding wheels designed for various purposes, but is especially designed for use in dressing and truing dental grinding wheels and to enable such wheels to be trued by the action of a rapidly revolving dental lathe wheel. In the use and operation of the device for this purpose the device is disposed so as to bring the edge of the wheel 10' in contact with the outer face of the lathe wheel 12, the wheel 10 being supported by the bracket l at the proper angle for a dressing and truing action.
It will thus be understood that a grinding wheel 10 which is uneven or of irregular form may be held in contact with the outer face of the lathe wheel 10, which is rapidly rotated, and imparts rapid rotation to the wheel 10, the lathe wheel in revolving grinding or cutting off the uneven places on the wheel 10 and dressing the same down until the wheel 10 is absolutely true and smooth.
It will be observed that the invention provides a device of the character for the purpose stated which is readily portable for transfer from place to place, which may be used for supporting grinding wheels of various kinds to be dressed and trued by contact with a lathe wheel or other dressing element and which will be found of great convenience to dentists or others in dressing and truing irregular wheels of the character mentioned.
I claim 2- A device of the character described embodying a suitable base, a post or standard rising therefrom, and a bracket at the upper (ITOPY,
end of said standard disposed substantially In testimony whereof I afiix my signature at an oblique angle thereto and ofiset mainly in presence of two witnesses.
therefrom, said bracket being bifurcated to provide upper and lower bearing lugs, the WILBER E. ADAMS. upper lug having a bearing passage extending therefrom and the lower lug having a Witnesses: bearing passage extending but partially W. A. ADAMS, therethrough and forming a bearing socket. E. B. -BASS.
