WRITING-DESK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 29, 1914. Serial No. 835,282.
rooms for rovidin a lace where ersons' may conveniently do such writing as is necessary.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an ornamental desk structure as specified. which has a writing table top divided into a plurality of compartments for accommodating a number of persons at the same desk, and to further provide a centrally disposed supporting post for the writing table top, which post is hollow and provided with a plurality of openings formed therein for convenient reaching by the persons using the various sections of the desk for the reception of waste paper or like refuse. which refuse is received by a removable drawer positioned beneath the writing table top.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts .as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and claimed.
In describing the invention in .detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the improved writing desk, Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view on the line 4% of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a detail elevation of a modified form of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the supporting base of the desk, which has extending upwardly therefrom a vertical supporting post 2., which post is square in cross section and has a platform 3 mounted upon its' upper terminal end, which platform is supported by brackets 1 for providing an artistic design to the upper end of the supporting post 2.
The platform 3 has mounted thereupon an electric light of any suitable ornamental design 5.
In Fig. 5 of the drawings an electric fan 6 is shown mounted upon the upper surface of the platform 3, and the fan is operatively connected in any suitable manner to any suitable source of electric energy supplied (not shown), as is the globe 5.
Patented June 15,1915.
The vertical upright su )porting post 2 is square in cross section, and it has secured thereto intermediate its ends a platform or table top 7, which table top is supported by brackets 8, which brackets are securely attached to the sides of the supporting post 2 in any suitable manner, and radiate therefrom for efficiently supporting the table top 7 in a horizontal position. The table top or desk 7 is divided into a plurality of compartments 10, by partitions 11, which partitions radiate from the corners of the supporting post 2 and divide the writing top of the desk into a plurality of substantially triangular shaped writing tables, each of which has a seat 12 positioned adjacent thereto whereby a person desiring to use the desk may conveniently write thereupon while sitting on the seat or stool 12.
The seats 12 are supported by bars 14, which bars are angled intermediate their ends as shown at 15, and their lower terminal ends are hingedly connected as at 16 to the bars 17, which bars are secured in any suitable manner to base 1 of the supporting post 2, and are supported by vertical supporting bars or rods 18. The seats 12, being hingedly connected to the bars 17 are foldablebeneath the writing desk top 7 so as to be out of the way when not in use;
The partitions 11 have various racks 20 secured to their sides, for the reception of various articles such as stationary, railroad time tables or the like, and other suitable conveniences such as a calendar 21, ink wells, penholder supports (not shown) and other articles which add to the convenience of a writing desk may be attached to the sides of the partition 11 or placed upon the top of the desk as desired.
The compartments 10, into which the writing top of the desk table is divided have plates 22, which are constructed of transparent material such as smooth glass placed thereupon, for providing a perfectly smooth and compact surface for placing the stationeryto be written upon and to permit of the insertion of various types of advertising matter between the transparent writing surface and the upper surface of the various compartments of the desk top 7, so that the person using the desk will readily see the advertising matter which is thus displayed.
The upper portion of the supporting post 2, or the portion above the top of the compartment l1 and below the platform 3, is provided with a plurality of transparent panels 24, which panels are provided for the purpose of the insertion of advertisements or, if it is desired, of artistic designs, and these panels 24 are preferably constructed of clear crystal glass, which is removable for the purpose of changing the advertisements or artistic designs displayed thereby.
Arms 25 radiate from the sides of the vertical support 2, and form supports for lights 26, which are positioned directly over the portions or compartments 10 into which the table or desk top 7 is divided by the partitions 11, and these lights are controllable by the same source of power which controls the light 5 or the fan 6, when the latter is mounted upon the upper end of the desk supporting post 2.
The vertical supporting post 2 of the desk is hollow, and has a pluralityof openings 27 formed therein, which openings are positioned in the fiat side of the vertical supporting post for convenient access thereto from the various compartments 10, and they are provided for the reception of waste paper or refuse, which refuse when inserted 1 through the openings 27 passes downwardly within the hollow portion of the vertical support 2 and lodges in a drawer 28, which drawer is slidably mounted in the vertical support near the lower terminal end of the same. The vertical support 2. has diagonally extending plates 29 formed therein, which plates divide the hollow portion of the vertical supports into a plurality of compartments, and they. are provided, specifically for preventing persons from looking through the openings 27 at the persons who may be writing at the opposite compartments 10, thereby rendering a certain amount of privacy to the writing desk. The plates or partitions 29 extend only a short distance longitudinally Within the hollow portion of the vertical support2.
In reducing the invention to practice, certain minor features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may necessitate alteration, to which the patentee is entitled provided such alterations fall within the scope of what is claimed.
l/Vhat is claimed is In a writing desk structure, a desk top, a vertical supporting post secured to and extending through the center of said desk top and projecting above the upper surface of .said desk top, said vertical supporting post being hollow and provided with openings in the portion thereof which extends above said desk top, a drawer removably mounted in the lower portion of said hollow Vertical supporting post for receiving refuse when inserted within said post through said openmgs.
