THUMB-GUARD FOR RAZORS.
Application filed September 1, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VALTER S. HYDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prineville, inthe county of Crook and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Thumb-Guards for Razors, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple and effectige thumb guard for use on the tang of a razor to prevent the thumb or a finger of the hand holding the razor from becoming sore and tender in the constant use of. the razor.
The invention comprehends, among other features, the provision of a device preferably formed of a single piece of stamped metal and which can be readily applied to the razor as a guard or protector for the thumb.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a razor showing my device applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken through the tang of the razor showing the device applied therto; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device on its under side.
Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose a razor 10 having the usual tang 11 formed with the blade 12 and having the usual handle 13 arranged to swing thereon. The guard or protector consists of a curved body 14: having longitudinal edges 15 adapted to bear against the sides of the tang, said body at one end being formed to provide a lip 16 and at the other end having a longitudinally extending tongue 17 which, bent upon itself, has its inner end forming a second lip 18. The face of the body 14 can be provided with a series of serrations 19, although it will be readily understood that the said face of the body can be left smooth if desired.
In the use of the guard or protector the same is applied to the tang 11 to lie between the blade 12 and handle 13, with the longitudinal edges 15 of the body 14 bearing Specification of Letters Patent.

against the sides of the tang and the lips 16 and 19 adapted to extend into a plurality of the series of serrations 20 which are found on the tang of a razor, thus holding the body rigidly upon the tang so that the body will extend longitudinally of the tang and have the tongue 17 thereof projecting toward the handle to lie between the inner ends of the two parts of the usual handle of the razor. When the razor is grasped in the hand for use the thumb is placed against the face of the body and on account of the peculiar curvature of the body and the additional surface against which the thumb bears, it will be apparent that the razor can be more firmly gripped and the thumb prevented from becoming sore or calloused when the razor is placed in use, whereas the thumb is furthermore prevented from slipping, as would otherwise be the case if the gard or protector were not used and the thumb placed directly against the narrow smooth edge of the tang.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the device described is of a simple construction and in view of the fact that it is formed of a single piece of metal can be readily stamped from sheet material and cheaply manufactured. It will also be seen that the same can be readily applied to the tang of a razor and as readily removed therefrom.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. As a new'article of manufacture, a guard or protector for a razor comprising a body formed of a single piece of material, with its longitudinal edges adapted to bear against the sides of the serrated tang of the razor, a lip projecting from one end of the body, a tongue projecting from the other end of the body, and a second lip formed with the inner end of the tongue, the said tongue being adapted to lie along an edge of the tang and the said lips adapted to bear against the serrations on the tang of the razor.
2. A protector for a razor having a serrated tang formed with the blade and having the handle of the razor connected thereto, comprising a curved body for attachment to the tang, a tongue projecting from one In testimony whereof I aflix my signature end of the body, a lip on the other end of in presence of tWo Witnesses.
the body, and a second lip projecting from WALTER S HYDE the tongue, with the said tongue and body extending longitudinally of the tang and Witnesses: said lips bearing against the serrations M. R. ELLIOTT,
thereon. D. E. BLANOHARD.
