To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, EDWARD L. VON EscuEN and ELEANOR B. Von ESCHEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Kirksville, in the county of Adair and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Policemens Billies, of which the following is a specification.

An object of the invention is to provide a hilly or club for use by policemen, watchmen and the like.

The invention comprehends, among other features, the provision of a billy constructed to provide an effective weapon against in truders, burglars and thieves and which, to this end, provides a weapon which can be readily carried in the hand and which, among other features, provides a suitable grip or holding means whereby, the weapon, when used, will not readily slip out of the hand.

In the further disclosure of the invention reference-is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:

Figure l is a vertical sectional view taken through the billy; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 in Fig. 1.

Referring more particularly to the views, we disclose a hilly 10 consisting of a body 11 including a core 12 preferably formed of wood or the like and hollowed out to receive a series of batteries 13, the said core 12 being preferably inclosed in a leather wrapper 14, as shown, At the outer end of the body 11 the said body is adapted to project beyond the wrapper 14 and is preferably threaded to receive a collar 15 for holding a reflector and socket 16 within the outer end of the core and also for securing a cover, preferably of glass and formed to dili'use, light, in position on the reflector 16, an incandescent lamp 18 being carried by the reflector and having connection by wires 19 with the batteries 13. The wires 19 are preferably coiled in the nature of springs and the said wires, together with the inner end of the lamp, are encircled by a felt cushion 20 so as to prevent any jarring of the lamp 18 when the hilly is in use.

carries the reflector 16 connecting with the inner end of the lamp 18 and the said plate 21 is preferably adapted to lie in a recess 22 formed in the core 12 and covered by the leather wrapper 1a, with the rear-end of the plate bent laterally to form a contact head 23 adapted to be engaged by the free end of a contact plate 2e having connection with the batteries and also movably arranged within the core 12, the said plate 24 carrying an exteriorly arranged button 25 so that when the button is pressed the free end of the plate 24 will be engaged with the contact head 23 of the plate 21 to complete an electric circuit and ignite the lamp 18 as will be readily understood by referring to the views, it being further understood that the plate 2% is preferably of a spring-like nature so that when pressure is released on the button the free end of the plate will be moved out of engagement with the contact head 23 to break the circuit to the lamp 18.

The inner end of the core 12 terminates in a recess 26 and a member 27 carrying a holding strap 28 is swivelly connected to the inner end of the core by a screw 29 and which also passes through the inner ends of the holding strap to rigidly secure the holding strap to the member 27, a filler 30 being arranged to cover the head of the screw 29 and more rigidly hold the holding strap in engagement with the member.

-Now it will be apparent that the device disclosed provides for a hilly having the usual shape but which is constructed so that it enables the billy to be readily gripped in the hand and, in fact, by means of the strap is secured so that it cannot readily slip out of the hand when used or be pulled out of the hand of the oilicer. By having the holding strap 28 arranged as mentioned, the said holding strap will not become tangled relatively to the body of the hilly and the billy will be free to rotate relatively to the holding strap or vice versa, thus insuring an effective grip of the hand upon the handle end of the hilly.

Having thus described our invention, we claim:

1. In a billy, the combination with a core. said core having a recess therein, of a dish shaped member in the said recess, a second member in the dish shaped portion of the dish-shaped member, a holding strap passing' around th; second member, with its ends lying within the recess of the-dish shaped member, and a screw for swivelly holding the second member in the recess of the dish-shaped member, said screw passing through the ends of the holding strap to secure the same against removal from the recess of the dish-shaped member.

2. In a billy, the combination with a core, said core being provided with a recess in one end thereof, a member inthe recess, of a screw for swivelly holding the said member therein, and a holding strap having its ends embedded in the said member, with the screw passing through the ends of the strap to secure the ends of the strap rigidly 15 in the saidmember.
