' citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding in Douglaston, county of Queens, Long Island, State of, New York, have 1nvented' a certain new and useful Liquid Door-Check, of which the following is a' specification.
Thisl invention relates to liquid door checks of that class adapted to be set in the sill of the door to act on the lower part of the door, and embodies a structure capable of closing a double acting door'.-
As illustrated in the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section, showing some of the parts in. elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view with the covers of the casing removed. Fig. 3 is a 'transverse vertical section on the line A, B Fig. 2, and Figs. 4 and 5 are vertical sections of the cylinder and piston, detached, showing only so much thereof as to illustrate the relation of these parts to one another.
The casing 1 is closed by the cover plates 2 and 3, the cover 2 being readily removed for the inspection of the working parts with the device in operative position. Ehe cover Vplate 3 is provided with a bearing in alinement with a bearing 5 in the bottom of the casing at one of its ends; these bearings hold a vertical shaft a which is fastened to the door axially in line with its swinging axis, and the means for such connection may be a bar 8 adapted to be secured to the lower edge of the door and attached to the shaft 4 by a square 7 on its upper end fitting into a corresponding hole in the bar. rllhe casing is provided with horizontal bearings 13 and 14 which hold a shaft 12 operatively connected to shaft 7 by bevel wheels 10 and l1. Walls or partitions 13 connect the4 bearing 13 to the side walls of the casing, forming a pocket for holding a lubricant into which. the gear 11 will extend and which reaches thelower end of the shaft 4, resting on a step washer 6, through a slot 4 in the side of the bearing 5.

being further wound up when the door is moved 1n one direction and the other one strengthened by being further wound up when the door is moved in the other direction. On the other end of the shaft 12 which carries the bevel gear 11 is secured an arm 25 provided with a crank pin 26, carrying a connecting rod 27 whose lower end by pin 28 controls the action of the piston 29. This piston is litted to vertically reciprocate in a cylinder 30 formed integral with the casing 1, and below the cylinder' is provided a pressure 4chamber 31. Extend ing from the top ofthe cylinder are grooves constituting ports whose lower ends are uncovered when the piston is in its highest position, as shown at Fig. 3. The upper part of the piston is cup shaped and through tfhe side are formed openings 33 which aline with the ports 32 and register with them during a portion of the pistons stroke. Extending through the bottomV of the pis` ton are passages 34, 35 having enlarged chambersat theinlower ends in which ball valves 36, 37 are held by a clip 42. lThese ball valves' close the lower ends of the pasages when at the upper ends of their cham ers.
A by-pass is provided between the pres,- sure chamber 31 and the cylinder and casing consisting, of passages 38, 39 and 4:0, the How of the liquid 'through them being governed by a valve on the end of a rod 4:1 located over the upper end of the passage 38, said valve rod being screw threaded, whereby close and fine adjustment of the flow of liquid through the by-pass may be made.
A suitable liquid, as amixture of glycerin,
alcohol and water, is applied in the casing ilo sudden, and to avoid this the lower part of v the piston may be tapered or beveled as shown at Figs. 3 and d, or the lower ends of the ports 32 may be inclined downwardly, as shown at 32 Fig. 5. Either method will avoid sudden lshocks by proi'iding for a gradual cutting o of the flow shows the position of the parts with the en- ,orgy of the spring 16 increased, when the 20 ,door has been moved in a right-hand direction looking toward its pivotal connection. Noresistance to the action of the spring is offered when the door is released until the door is closed to an extent for the piston to close the ports 32, which causes sufficient pressure in the chamber 3l to force the ball valves 3G, 37 to their seats, leaving the bypass passage as the only exit from the chainber 3l for theliquid and the speed of movenient of the door is further decreased until it is within a few degrees of closing, and then the pressure in chamber 31 will have dropped sufficiently to allow the valves 3G, 37 to fall away from their seats, allowing the piston toI descend freely and removing practically all resistance to the final closing of the door.
Of course it will be readily understood that checks embodying the essential features of this device may be used to control doors opening only one way; one drive spring then only will be needed.
