Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
BENGT G. BLOMSTEN, OF VVAUPAGA, WISCONSIN.
IM PROVEM ENT IN STRAW-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 112,113, dated February 28, 1871.
I, BENGT C. BLoMsTEN, of the village of Waupaca, county of Waupaca, State of Wiscousin, have invented a new and Improved Corn -Fodder or Straw Cutter, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to that class of strawcutters which are provided with automatic devices for feeding the straw to the knife and consists in certain details of construction, which will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawing, Figure l represents a front elevation of my improved machine; Figs. 2 and'3, side elevations of the same; Fig. 4, a perspective View of one of the rollers detached 5 and Fig. 5, an enlarged view, in elevation, of the lever and pawl for operating the feedwheel.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe its construction and manner of operation.
The general construction of my machine is quite similar to many others in common use, and it need not, therefore, be particularly described in detail.
A fram e-work of proper construction, a feedboX, balance-wheel with knife attached, and feeding-rolls, operated by suitable mechanism, should be provided, as is usual in this class of machines.
The feature of novelty is shown in the arrangement of levers for driving the machine.
I employ an ordinary treadle, G, to which is attached the connecting-rod O, which latter actuates the lever and pawl P, operating the feeding-roller a.
To the treadle is also attached the handlever E, which is in its turn connected to the crank-arm m of the shaft M. The crank-arm m slides in a socket in the end of shaft M, and is held in any desired position by means of a clamp-screw.
The general operation of my cutter is similar to others of this class. l
The combination of the treadle, levers, &c., for operating thefeeding mechanism, is exceedingly advantageous, as it permits the power to be applied` under very favorable circumstances. By means of the adjustable crankarm the degree of speed imparted to the feedin g-roller is easily regulated.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the trcadle G, connect- .ing-rod 0, levcrP, with its connections, le-
ver E, and adjustable crank-arm m, as described.
BENG'I C. BLOMSTEN.
