vice for washing and wiping windows and for other cleaning purposes, and is particularly designed to provide a comparatively short handled device whereby windows can be washed by reaching out underneath the window frames and cleaning the glass on the outside by reason of the-handlev holding the washing and Wiping attachments.

The invention resides in the construction of the holder for the washing cloth or sponge which also provides, on one of its edges, a wiper so that the windows can be easily and quickly cleaned.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which n a Figure 1-is a side view with the handle broken away, this view showing our improved form of cleaning device mounted on the top of the handle, and Fig. 2 is ,a top view of the device shown in Fig. 1.

The device consists of a headpiece which is adapted to grasp a cleaningelement, the head piece being fastened onto a handle 10 which can be of any suitable length and provided with a ferrule 11 on its top edge by means of which it is fastened to the baseplate 12. The base-plate is preferably made of sheet metal and is provided on one edge with a strip 13 which is suitably attached, the illustration showing a strip 14 which is riveted by means of rivets 15 to hold the strip 13 in place. The strip 13 is of rubber, felt or any similar flexible material and forms a wiper. The edge to which this strip is attached will be called, for convenience in this specification, thefront edge. The base-plate has a suitable gripping edge at its back edge, this being preferably formed by bending up the back edge as at 16 and providing said edge with suitable teeth 17. v

Extending upwardly from the side edges of the base-plate 12 and preferably being made integral therewith, are the arc-shaped guides 18 which can be provided with forwardly extending stiffening strips 19. A gripping plate 20 has clips 21 bent down therefrom which are adapted to engage clips 22 0f the base-plate, the clips being preferably secured together by rivets or pins 23 on which the gripping plate is adapted to swing. can slide along the arc-shaped guides 18 and J thereby assist in holding the gripping plate in its adjusted positions, the sleeves being locked in'place by thumb-screws 25 which bear against the arc-shaped guides. The

back edge of the gripping plate is adapted to cooperate with the back edge of the base plate .to form a clamp. The back edge of the gripping plate is preferably made by bending it down as at 26 and providing it with teeth 27 The clips 21 and 22 on the opposite sides of the plates are adapted to hold the plates apart even at their pivotal point so as to provide plenty of room between .themso that the operator can use a large cloth or sponge and-place a major portion of it in rear of the gripping edges 16- and 26 so as toform, in a sense, a considerable reservoir or holder for water, so that considerable cleaning can be done without an additional supply of water being furnlshed to the cloth or sponge. In the drawing, however, we show a small washing ele ment 28, which can be a cloth or sponge, or

any other suitable material.

The construction as devised is cheaply 5' made, has very few parts, and is well adapted forits purpose. Itcan beused for wash ing the outside of windows, the part 28 that is gripped between the plates being used to apply the water to the surface, and also for washing off the dirt accumulated on a window, and after that has been done, the handle can be turned suiliciently to bring the wiper l3 outside'the pane of glass, and by drawing down the wiper, the window previ ously washed can be'cleared of most of its moisture and it polished surface.

Of course the device can be used for other purposes beside the washing of windows,

and the length of handle will be varied purpose to which the according to the washer is to be put. 7

Having thus described our what we claim is 1. In a cleaning device, a base-p1ate with invention,

its back edge formed into a gripping edge,

quickly drieswith a clean,

arc-shaped guides on the sides of the baseplate, a gripping plate pivoted near the front edge of the base-plate and having its rear edge opposite the rear edge of the baseplate, clips on the sides of the gripping plate and movable along the arc-shaped guides, and locking means on the gripping plate to secure it in adjusted positions to the arc-shaped guides.

In a cleaning device, a base-plate with arc-shaped guides bent up from its side edges, clips bent up from the sides of the base plate in front of the arc-shaped guides, a gripping plate pivotally secured between the clips of the base-plate, sleeves en the gripping plate and arranged to slide on the arc-shaped guides, and thumb-screws inthe SlGEBYGS and adapted to engage the areshaped guides to leek the gripping plate in adjusted positions.

In a cleaning device, a base-plate with arc-shaped guides bent up from its side edges, clips bent up from the sides of the baseplate in front f the arc-shaped guides, a gripping plate pivotally secured between the clips 'ofthe base-plate, sleeves on the gripping plate and arranged to slide on the arc-shaped guides, thumb'screws in the sleeves and adapted to engage the areshaped guides to lock the gripping plate in BARBARr ZIEGLER;
