SAW CLAMP.
APPLIUATION FILED 11.22, 1913.

SAW-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914.
Application filed April 22, 1913. Serial No. 762,900.
To all whom it may concera Be it known that 1, JOHN B. VVALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Punxsutawney, in the county of Jefferson and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Saw-Clamp; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful. improved saw clamp.
An object of the invention is to provide a saw clamp comprising a stationary jaw and a movable jaw, one having a convex longitudinal surface adapted to enter a concave longitudinal surface of the opposite jaw, and between which surfaces a saw to be sharpened is adapted to be clamped, in order to prevent vibration of the saw blade.
Another object of the invention is the provision of two correspondingly shaped U-shaped members, to the ends of which bars are pivotally connected, one of said bars acting as a stationary clamping jaw, while the other bar constitutes a holder for the movable jaw. The holding bar having guides for the movable jaw, in combination with a cam device coacting with a lug on an extension of the movable jaw, for operating the movable jaw toward and from the stationary jaw.
A feature of the invention is the provision of lateral lugs on the U-shaped members, through which the thumb screws are threaded provided with swiveled plates, between which and lugs of the holding bar the board of a bench is clamped. \Vhen the device is detached from the bench the Ushaped members are folded, as shown.
The invention comprises further features and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings ;--Figure 1 is a front view of the improved clamp, showing the same as applied to a bench. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a front edge view showing the U-shaped members folded, one partly overlapping the other. Fig. 4c is an end view of the saw clamp. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 55 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a detail view on line 6-6 of Fig. 2 showing the pivotal connection of the U-shaped members in pockets of one of the jaws and the holding bar. Fig. 7 is a detail view, more thoroughly showing the cam for cooperating.
with said lug on the extension of the movable jaw for operating the movable jaw toward and from the stationary jaw.
deferring to the drawings, 1 designates a stationary jaw, having a pocket 2 at each end, while 3 denotes a bar, likewise having a pocket at each end. The bar 3 constitutes a holder for the movable jaw 5. The pockets of the bar 3 are denoted by the numeral 1. The jaw l is provided with a convex longitudinal surface 7, adapted to enter a con cave surface or groove 8 of the jaw 5, that is, when the two aws are brought together without a saw blade thercbetween.
Substantially midway of the jaw 5, a lateral extension car 9 is provided upon the movable jaw. This laterally extending ear 9 is constructed with a slot 10, which re ceives the raised guide 11 of the bar 3, so as to guide the movable jaw toward and from the stationary jaw. Rising from said extension car 9 at the end of said slot 10 is an elongated lug 12, with which the annular flange 13 of the cam 14 cooperates, which together with the cam acting against the shoulder 14: of the movable jaw causes the movable jaw to move from and toward the stationary jaw. The cam is held in position by the bolt 15, which passes through the raised guide 11 of the bar 3 and is threaded therein, and locked in position by a lock nut 16.
Extending transversely of the pockets 2 and 41 of the movable jaw and the bar 3 are pins 17 and 18, upon which the upper ends 19 of the U-shaped members 20 are pivoted. The U-shaped members 20 are provided with laterally extending lugs21, through which the thumb screws 22 are threaded. The upper ends of the thumb screws are provided with swiveled plates 23, between which and the lugs 2-1 the bench board 25 is clamped, thereby holding the saw clamp securely in position. When the saw clamp is detached from the bench 25, the U-shaped members may be folded as shown in Fig. 3. In this manner the saw clamp may be arranged in a compact form, for shipment.
From the foregoing it is apparent that there has been devised a simple and efficient saw clamp, and one which has been found practical and desirable, owing to the detachi ability of the same and the folding of the a Q aliases parts into a compact compass, as Well as the v particular manner of adjustment of the movable jaw, and also owing to the provision of means for preventing the vibration of the saw blade When clamped between the clamping jaws. V
The invention having been set forth, What is claimed as new and useful is In a saw blade clamp, a stationary aw, a bar a movable jaw operable on the bar, means for operating and holding the movable aw in adjusted position, the direct corresponding opposite ends of said bar and the stationary jaw having oppositely disposed pockets, U-shaped members, the ends of each being pivoted in the opposite pock- &
ets of the bar and the stationary jaw, one side of each pocket being open to permit the ll-shaped members to close toward said jaws, the opposite closed side of each pocket acting to limit the outward movement of each U-shaped member, each U-shaped member having a lateral lug, and means carried by said lug for clamping a bench between said means and a portion of said bar.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JOHN B. XVALKER.
