Description

JOHN KURZ, 'or rH1'1,.\nictrnnx, rnNNsYL'vANL/t Leners Patent Ng. 111,948, dated February 21, 1871.
' IMPROVEMENT lN vPASSENGER-REGIST'ERSA FOR CARS.
` The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent andvmaking part ol' the s'ame.
Tana-Il chant it may concern I ,l v Y Be it known that i; J HXKURZ, ot' the city and count-y of'. Philadelphia and State et' Pennsylvania,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Passenger-Registers; and I do hei'eby dec-larethat the following -is a full, clear,` and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, ret` erence beiughad to the accompanying dmwing and to the letters of iefereuceimarked thereon.`
The object of my invention is to provide a simple .mechanism to be applied to a. city passenger railway-car, for registering' the number ot' passengers "who may enten the car ,at different points' on the route of travel, and thus preventing tiaud on the part ofthe employees. l
VFigure 1 is a side elevation ofa platform and a portion of the end of' :t ear, showing my invention applied; V- l Figure 2 is a plan view of the mechanism'placed underneath each -of the steps of the platform.
Figure 3 isa sectional view ot' a portion ot' the same. A
Figure 4 isa. ti'ont view of the gearing, lever rod, and spring, forming al part of the appamtus.
Figure 5 is a view of the dial-faces and hands eo'n-' nccted therewith.
Figure 6 is a perspective view nl' the under side ol' one ot' the plates forming threshold.
To enable -those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe it.
The steps leading 'to'the platform ot' the ear are. each composed of a hollow sill, A, and a ,deflecting plate, B,- made of cast or wrought-iron. l
Placed in the said sill, and supported on the knii'cedge bearings in the brackets G, (J, (}",'and C, are two yoke-shanied levers, l) and D, fig. 2, the inner .ends, d and d', of which rest on a lever, 1)?, placed inimediatelygbcneatl1..
.One end f this lever is attached to a crossbar, E, whichl serves as a fuleruin, and is alsosupported en knife-edge hearings in the bmckcts Cand (55,
secured to the -inncr sides ol' the sill A, and the opposite end ot' the said lever has a rod, F, attached to 1t, which extends np and is connected to a lever, D, provided with a pa-wl and ratchet-wheel, (l.
Theshaft H, lig. 4, on which the ral'el|et-\vl1eel (i is placed, is provided with a pinion, l, and'a hand or pointer, ,.l, and on a lille with it are placed two additional shafts Hl and lli. i
lfhc shaft H,`bcaring on it a sliur-whcel, li, which gears with the pinion 1, and the shaft 1l is provided with a spur-wheel, li', which gears with a pinion, l', on the shaft li'.
Bot-h of these shafts are furnished with hands or pointers J and J', ande-all this portion of the apparat-us is iuclosed inV a box, L, placed inv any convenient position on the car.
'v The l'ront part ofthe box .l1 is made with three A dial faces, M, M, and M2, fig; 5, one being intended for cach shaft, -and are marked for unit, tens, and hundreds, the gearing being regulated so as to cause a partial rotation ofthe hand or pointer `when the nplate B is depressed. The dials are covered with a glass, N, through which they may be observed.
'lhe plate B has secured or formed on the under side of it two cross-bars, l and l, t-he lower edges of" which are made Vshaped,'and rest on the upper'por-v tiou of the levers D and D.
llaccd underneath one end of' the lever Di is a spring, R, ".vhich forces this end of the lever up after it has been depressed (and pressure removed) toits lformer position'.
-',l."he plate B is held in position on' the sill A'by means of rings S S secured on the under side of it, which engage with hooks 'l. 'l attached to the inside of the sill.
The gearing is so regulated that the pressure of the foot of a person entering the car on the detiecting plate l5 will cause the hand er pointer to move halt' way lmtween two adjacK-.nt figures, and the person is not regisl'sred as one until they step oli' the car, which causes the. hand or poiillcr to move the other half'the distance and to register for`one, thus causing two movements ol'. the hand or pointer before a. person is fully registered.'-
llaving thus deserilnzd luy invention, its eonstruction and operation,V
fluit l. elaii'n, and desire to secure by Lett-ers Patent, isl I. 'lhe :nrangenient ot' the levers l), 1)', and DI, brackets (l, O', l", C, C', and C", and spring R, in combination with the hollow sill A and detiecting plate l, substantially in the manner and for the purposespecificd.
.5. In Lunnbination willi the above, the rod'F, lever ln testimony whercol l have hereunto signed my l name in the presence ol two subscribing witnesses.
