Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 18, 1912. Serial No. 732,031.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JosnPrI Emma, acitizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sectional Radiator Tubes, Connectors, Expanders, and Flangcrs,
of which the following is 'a specification.
This invention relates to radiator connector expander-s and the like, and has for its object to provide a new andv improved device of this description:
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a View of a radiator with parts broken away showing the connection betweenv the sections when completed; Fig. 2 is a sectional View showing the device in position ready'to complete the connection; Fig.
3 is a. sectional view similar to Fig. 2 show ing the parts after the device has been exand'ed; Fig. 4 1s asectronal view taken on 4 line of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail of the endpiece.
Like numerals refer to like parts through-- p out the several figures.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings, I. have shown a radiator 1 made .up of a series of sections 2. These sections are connectedtcgether by means of short tubes 3. The tubes are expanded and have their ends flanged so as to produce a tight joint. In F ig. 2, I. have shown an enlarged view in section with the tube and expand ing device in position therein ready to be operated. This expanding device consists of two segment separate pieces 4 and 5, separate from each other and provided at the r ends with the enlarged or projecting portions 6 connected with the body of the pieces 4 and 5 by means of the inclined faces 7. The pieces 4 and 5 are hollowed out so as to provide the grooves 8. An expanding piece 8 is mounted upon a controlling rod or part 9 and is provided with a beveled face 10 adapted to be forced between the pieces4 and 5. The part 9 is preferably non-circular so that a wrench may be applied thereto.
vSome means is provided for holding the ieces4 and 5 in position while the tool is being moved into the short tube 3. Any suitable means for this purpose may be used. As herein shown, the part 9 is provided with an end piece 11 small enough to be inserted in the tube. The holdin pieces 12 are inserted in the openings in t e pieces 4 even strains being and 5 and are movably connected with the end piece 11 so that they can be spread apart as the pieces 4 and 5 are spread apart. As herein shown, the holding pieces 12 are provided with reduced portions which work in slots 13 in the end piece 11. The expanding piece 8 is preferably provided with guides or wings 14 which pass between the pieces 4 and 5 as shown in-Fig. 4 so that said pieces will be rotated when the part 9 is rotated. two radiator sections together for example,
the short tube 3 is placed in position in the openings in the sections and the pieces 4 and 5 inserted therein as shown in Fig. 2. In this position the portion of the part 9 between said piecesis small so as to let them come together a suflicient amount to permit them to be inserted in the tube. Theexpanding device 8 is now forced in between thepieces 4 and 5 so as to spread them apart V and the expanding device and part 9 arerotated so asto'e'xpand and flange thefends of the tube 3 and as it were rivet them to the radiator sections so as 'toprovide a tight connection between said sections, the parts being in their expanded position with the connection completed as shown in Fig. 3'. After the ends of the tube 3 have been properly expanded and flanged, the expanding device 8 is removed from the pieces 4 and 5 and the tool withdrawn from the tube. It will thus be seen that by means of this construction, the radiator sections may be easilyyquickly and cheaply connected together by means of a simple but yet tight and secure connection, without the use of screw threads, gaskets or bolts, and by means of a simple short section of a pon necting pipe or tube. This device connects the sections together without undue or undeveloped thereby pre venting injury to the parts.
In Figs. 2 and 3, I have shown beveled end faces on the two radiator sections, but it is of course evident that this is not neces sary and that the device may be applied to the ordinary sections without these inclined faces and where the portion around the openings is of any ordinary form and construction.
I claim:

' pyginclined 'faces, a rod which passes beween said -separable parts provided with a small portion which permits the two eparableparts to come close together and a larger expanding portion, means for con necting said separable pacts with said rod, said'larger expanding portion adapted to be forced between said parts while in position so as to separate them and means for rotating said separable parts soas to expand the ends ofsaid tube and tightly connect it with the radiator sections.
3. A sectionalradiator tube, connector, expander and flanger'comprising two separable segment parts adapted to be inserted in the short tube between the radiator sections, said parts having enlarged ends connected to the body portion by inclined faces, a controlling -part passing between said separable parts and to which they are movably connected, an expanding part connected with said controlling part and adapted to be forced between, -said separable parts so as to spread them apart.
4. A sectional radiator tube, connector,
expander and flanger comprising two sep arable segment parts adapted to-be'inserted in the short tube between the radiator sections, said parts having enlarged ends connected to the body portion by inclined faces, a controlling partjiassing between said separable parts and towhich they are mov ably connected, an expanding part connected with said controlling part and adapted to be forced between said .separableparts so as to spr'ead them apart, and means for re? tating said separable parts when spread a art. 7
5. A sectional radiator tube, connector, expander and flanger comprising two separablesegment part having enlarged ends, said separable parts provided with grooves on their adjacent faces, a controlling device adapted to pass intosaid grooves comprising two parts, one larger in size than the other, the largerapart adapted when forced with laterally projecting guides which pro" ject beyond said grooves and between said separable parts, an end piece connected with said controlling device, and connecting pieces movably connected with sa'id'j nd piece and engaging said separable pays.
