miNRr e, LUDLow-zn on TROY, NEW-YORK, AssleNoR To LUDLow VALVE, MANUFACTURING COMPANY, or sAnnPLAcn;
y Letters Patent lilo. 110,926, dated Jannary`1ll,'1l871.
VllVIPROVEMENT' IN SLIDING STOP-VALVES. 'l
The Schedulerrelfexred to these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
` To all whomI it may concern:A
`Be it known that I, HENRY G. 'LUnLoug 2d, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State ot' New York, have invented bci-tain new `and useful Improvements in Sliding Stop -Valves and I do hereby declare that'the' following is a full clear, and l exact descriptionthereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing of the same, which make part ot' this specification, and in which-f Figure 1 represents a vertical section of the valve, the gatesbeing shown as open,- l
Figure 2 represents a similar section, the gates be ing shown as closed; l Figufiie 3 represents a horizontal section at the line This adjustment is obtained by the 4capacity of the wedges to move lengthwise independent of the gates, to have'a slight movement with the stein independent of the gates, and to rock either endwise or crosswise in theirl bearings and guides, which have suiicient space or opening r in the rims d and ribsiz, fig. (5,'on the inner'i'aees ofthe gates, to allow of this Y accommodation of thewedges.
In the4 instance shown', the acting portions e of the wedges are formed ou the projecting ends of' the 'bars 'D D', and the valvestein (l is connected to tllese wedge-bars. betwceuth'e gates, so as to allow it to swivel thereon, and be held iu position 4by collars t' and u?, which embrace the wedges, as showiriii figs. l and 2;
The inclines'c are arranged to receive the actionv of .the wedges in closing the' gates, and in order that both gates may be pressed to their seats :equally and without catching,the incline or incliues are capable of having a lateral movement upon a pivot-pin, m, so that, in case -one gate strikes its seat first, the valve will lmove a/way sliglitly to lallow said gate to V' passupon and be pressed to its seat. f Instead of attaching the stem t0 the wedges, it may be attached to the lgates if desired, The-wedges, instead of being adjustable, may be fixed to the gates without departing froml my invention so long as they act in conjunction with a movable or adjustable incline orinclines. Instead of operat'ingthe gates by the inward and E outward movement ot' the stem, they may be operated by'a screw-ste'In-frevolving `on its axis and .passing through a-.screw attached to the" gates or wedges.
So, also, is itobvious thata single gate and wedge may be used to carry out my invention without departing from itslspirit. Having-described my invention, I clairnj l. A movable or adjustable incline or incliues, O, in combination with an adjustable 0r tixed valveoperating wedge or wedges, e E, essentially as described. i

gates and its adjustable wedge. v f
y My invention relates to that class of stop-valves in which the gates aremade separate and distinct from the stemwhich carries 'thenufaud j It consists in .the'femploymntof a movable incline 'or inelines, which acts in conjunction-with wedgesv topress the gates their sats,'-and' thereby overcome the disadvantage which would arise in case one gate strikes its .seat before the other, which would be likely to occur it thein-eliue wasfixed.
. 1V y invention also consistsffin the employment of oneor more wedges between the gates, in conjunction Vwith a movableincline ,or'inclines l My invention also consists in the employment of adjustable wedges, in conjunction with a movable inc ine or inclines.
f "In the accompanying drawing-.-
The 'shell or case A is provided with two seats, c a', surrounding the inlet and qutlctbpeniugs l) b', and two movable inclines c, attached t0 the shell on its `l4opposite inner sides, -fo'r'a purpose to be'presently described. 9 v n The case is provided with the'usual cap B, through which passes' the4 stem O, which carries and operates 2. One or more gates D, in combination with an the gates and Wedges.y adjustable incline or iuclines, c, and adjustable, or

The wedge or wedges E, arranged between the wedges, E E', arranged, in thelexample represented gates,in conjunction witha movable incline orinclines, inthe drawing, to cross the diameter of the gates, c, as described.
