HEINRICH' .'noT'zENRoTH, orrrirsnnc, PENNSYLVANIA.-
Laderalatant No. 110,637, dated January 3, 1871.
v vIMPROVEMENT 'IN REVERSIBLE LATCHES...`
The Schedule referred-to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Ymaking a part of this specification, iu'which- Figures 1, 2, and 3 are top views of the lock with the plate removed.
The invention relates to reversible latches, and consists in the construction of a sliding stop, with reference to the latch and case, -as hereinafter set forth.
A represents the case.;l j
B, the reversible latch, which is "swiveled in the yoke C lu D t', the follower or'operating the lyoke and latch; and
E, a veltically-'sliding stop, which is provided with a lug projecting througha slot in the end of the case.
F isa sliding bolt, and
G, a stop or pivoted catch f or locking the 'same when thrust outor drawn into the case,
S is a plate-spring, resting at -onc end ony the stopcatch G, and at thejother against a shoulder formed or projection, ma, of the case.
lhe round shank a of the latch B rests in semicrcular grooves e in the end of the yoke, and has a head, b, and collar, 0,. which retain it in proper-posiou the yoke C, while it bears centrally against an arm y s indicates a cylindrical projection on the stop E, which is surrounded by a spiral spring, whose pressure serves to retain said stop in the desiredl position.
n indicates a hole, in which a screw is inserted for securing the lockf-to the door.
The latch cannot be pushed in to be reversed uulless the screw be removed, so that the stop E may be moved down out of thc way.
The operation is as follows: y
AWhile the stop E occupies the position shown in fig. l, its lateral llange V projects' upward sutliciently to prevent the yoke being drawn back far enough to allow the latch to be reversed; but, when pushedv down, as iufig. 2, the follower may be turned to oc-l cupy theposition indicated, (one/of its arms i striking on the lug Z,) when the yoke-is yleft free to shoot forward, in which case the latch will project outside'the case, so as to enable it to be reversed; after which it may be thrust back, andthe follower turned to resume the position showny in fig. 1.
vBy pushing up the stop E till the part 1' iutervenes f between one of the ends u of the lyoke and the end wall of lthe case, 'the latch will be locked 'so that it cannotbe moved by meansof the follower.
I claimy asrnew and desire 4to secure by Letters The sliding stop E, provided with the vertical flange c and front projection r', and arranged as shown', whereby the latch is prevented from sliding into the case to be disengaged from the follower D i, for the purpose of reversal, or locked inposition, substantially as shown and described.
