To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GOTTLIEB WODTLT, a citizen of the United States, residingat Foster, in the county of Linn and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Nail-Extractor; and Iqdo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a new and useful double claw attachment for hatchets.

As one of the objects of the present invention, it is the aim to provide duplicate flat detachably connected claws, adapted for use in connectionwith a hatchet, more especially a lathing hatchet, or hatchet for carpenters work, such as making concrete forms, etc.

An object of the invention is to to dispose said elements of utility, as to not to lessen their efliciency and convenience, by reason of their combination.

Further, it is an object of the invention to connect a claw attachment upon each side of the head of the hatchet, by means of an improved dovetailed connection, thereby efliciently rendering the claws easily dotachable. The claw attachments shall also be constructed as integral parts of the head of the hatchet.

There are disclosed in the drawings cer tain features of construction, but in practical fields these features may necessitate alterations, to which the patentee is entitled, provided the alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.

The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

Referring more especially to the drawings 1 designates a hatchet head, such as that used for lathing. This head is provided with the usual hammer end 2 and cutting blade 3, which is provided with the usual notch 4 for extracting nails. A handie 5 is secured to the head as at 6, in the usual manner. In Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the head substantially where the handle is. connected and. the hammer end, is provided with a tapering recess on each side. These recesses 8 are oppositely arranged, and the side walls 9 of which are under cut, in order to prevent outward displacement of the body portions 10 of the claw devices 11. The bodies 10 of the claw devices are shaped correspondingly with the said recesses, in order to closely fit the same, there being a tapering pin 12, to hold the claw deviccsagainst lateral displacement. A small cotter pin l l passes through one end of the pin 12, so as to prevent the displacement of the same. The claw devices are duplicates in construction and arrangement, so that either claw can grip the head of a nail which is closely driven in. In extracting a nail or the like, one claw device is used to start the withdrawal of the nail, and after having been extracted partially the opposite claw device is disposed in engagement with the nail, whereby the same may be finally extracted.

In Figs. 4 and 5 the recess 8 is only opened at one end, and the side walls 9 of said recesses are also under cut. However, to hold. the body portions of the claw devices in said recesses 8, a bolt and nut 15 are employed.

In Fig. 6 the claw devices are constructed, as forming integral parts of the hatchet head.

From the foregoing it will be noted that there has been devised an exceedingly simle, efficient, and desirable duplicate claw devices for use upon all kinds of hatchets, such as a carpenters hatchet or lathing hatchets, and a construction which has been found practicable.

The invention. having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A nail extractor comprising a hammer poll having diametrically opposite recesses one upon each side, a pair of duplicate fiat claw devices arranged in registration opposite one another and disposed in said recesses and extending in the direction of the handle of the hammer and parallel thereto but ofiset from the hammer end, and a. key pin for detachably securing said claw devices in said recesses thereby rendering the same renewable or replaceable.

2. In a nail extractor; a hammer poll having a pair of duplicate claw devices, arranged parallel and diametrically opposite one another, and in registration and disposed at right angles to the poll and offset" from the hammer end thereof.

3. A nail extractor comprising a hammer poll having diametrically opposite V-sliaped v recesses one upon each side provided with dove-tailed walls, a pair of duplicate claw devices arranged parallel and in registration opposite one another and disposed between the dove-tailed walls of said recesses and extending in the direction of the handle of the hammer and parallel thereto and offset from the hammer end of the poll, the taper of sald recesses preventing movement of the, claw devices in one direction, and a key passing through the hammer poll ,ad
