Description

J. L. RANDOLPH.
LOCK NUT.
No. 110,499. v Patented Dec. 27,1870.
Witnesses: Inventor I tttitrli State ifi ititlti dffitt.
TO S. L. DENNY, OF CHRISTIANA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 110,499, dated December 27, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOCK-NUTS The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all. whom. it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES L.. RANDOLPH, of Berkeley Springs, in the county of Morgan and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and improved Mode of Preventing Nuts from \Vorking Loose on Bolts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference lnarked thereon.
This invention relates to that class of devices for locking nut-s which are provided with a spring plate for holding the not from turning, and consists in the manner of cutting and forming the plate, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawing- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the ends of two adjacent rails, which are united by means of a fish-plate and bolts, to which is applied my improved nut-locking device;
Figure 2 represents a transverse sectional view of the same; and
Figures 3 and 4 views of the locking plate, detached.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and method of operation.
A A represent the ends of two adjacent rails.
B represents the fish-plate, by me: us of which the ends of the rails are united in the usual well-known manner.
G represents the locking device, which consists simply of a plate cut in such manner as to permit a portion of its surface to spring up and rest against one or more of the sides of the nut.
At 0 the plate is shown so cut as to permit its outer edge to rise and surround the nut on three-sides, while at d it is so cut and arranged as to press against the nut upon one side. These changes, of course, are immaterial. To uuloosen the nut it is necessary simply to spring down the raised portion of the plate, when the-former will be free to move.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The plate 0, out and formed as described, with its spring for locking the nut, as and for the purpose set forth.
JAMES L. RANDOLPH.
