THOMPSON H. WILEY, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
DOOR-LOCK KEEPER.
Specification of Let-ters Patent.
Application filed July 28, 1913.
Patented Apr. 21, 1914. Serial No. 781,543.
To all whom, t may conce/rn:
Be it known that I, THOMPSON H. VILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Lock Keepers, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to an improved lock-keeper and has for its object to provide an art-icle of this class which may be conveniently adjusted Whenever require-d, so that its apertures may be disposed in alinement with the longitudinally movable lockbolt and latch-bolt of the lock.
It is well known that the horizontally movable latch-bolt or lock-bolt of a door will frequently make contact with the metallic parts of the lock-keeper of the door vcasing when an attempt is made to close or lock the door, this being caused by the sagging of the house or door frame, so that the latchbolt or lock-bolt will not be disposed in alinement and will not enter the apertures of the lock-keeper, the remedy generally being to change the position of the lock upon the door or to move the lock-keeper to a higher or lower position on the door frame. These changes may not be conveniently made, and when made generally result in defacement of the door or door frame. By use of the herein described invention an adjustment of the lock-keeper may be conveniently made so that the latch or bolt of the lock will be disposed in alinement with and will enter the apertures of the lock-keeper.
Wit-h the foregoing objects in view, the invention presents a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as described herein and claimed, and as illustrated in the drawing it being understood that only one embodiment of the invention is described, and that no limitation as to form, size, proportion or minor details are to be imposed within the scope of the claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical, front view of a keeper-plate. Fig. 2 is a View in longitudinal section of the keeperplate. Fig. 3 is a vertical front view of the adjusting-plate. Fig. 4 is a view in longitudinal section of the adjusting-plate. Fig.
5 is a front view of the device, the adjusting` plate being mounted upon the keeper-plate. Fig. 6 shows parts of a door and a door frame, partly in section7 the casing of the door-lock also being in section, and the lock` keeper being in'longitudinal section.
Referring now to the drawing for a more particular description, numeral l indicates the upright strip of a door casing having the recess 2 which is usually provided for receiving therein the horizontally movable lockbolt 3 and latch-bolt 4 of the lock 5 of the door 6.
At 7 is indicated a lock-keeper which is usually set in the casing to cover recess 2, and to provide a holding means for the bolts of the lock, said lock-keeper being securely held in position by means of screws 8 which enter the door-casing.
According to the novel construction of the lock-keeper, it consists in part of a keeper-plate 9 provided midway between its ends with a comparatively large rectangular aperture 10 and with apertures l1 which may be traversed by screws 8. It is alsoprovided with grooves 12 formed on its inner side to open on its ends and upon aperture 10. A second plate is employed, this being an adjusting-plate 13. It has a length less than that of plate 9 and has a width corresponding to the width of aperture 10 and grooves 12 of said plate 9. It is formed upon its outer side, midway between its ends, with 'a platform or stop 14 having a less length than aperture 10 of plate 9, said platform having a thickness corresponding to that of said plate.
As thus described the device may be mounted in the door-casing and may be secured by screws 8; and plate 13 may be adjusted longitudinally of plate 9, so that apertures 16 and 17 will be disposed in alinement, respectively, with bolts 3 and 4. It will be understood that the door, which swings horizontally, should thus present the bolts of the lock in alinement with said apertures in order that they may pass therein, and if, from shrinkage or sagging of the 'tured platform disposed in the elongated door or doorfcasing these parts are not in alinement7 the bolts vvill engage the metallic parts of the bolt keeper and will not work in the apertures.
In operation, the screivs S may be partly raised from their seatings by Well knoivn means, and thereupon plate i3 may be adj usted longitudinally of plate 9 so that apen tures 1G and 17 Will be in alinement with the bolts of the lock; and when members S are screived home; plate 13 ivill be compressed against and held stationary with plate t) by operation of the screivs; and the parts ivill be maintained in alinement for the purposes described.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In devices for the purpose described; a iirst plate formed with an elongated aperture opening on its front and back, and having grooves formed in its back to open on its ends and on said aperture; a second plate having a greater length than the aperture of the first plate and formed ivitl'i attenuated end-portions having slots opening on its terminals, and provided intermediate said at tenuated end-portions with an apertured platform substantially equal in thickness to that ofthe first plate; said second plate being adapted to be mounted with its aperaperture with its attenuated end-portions en gaging inthe grooves of said iirst plate; and
keepers traversing the grooved parts of the tirst plate for engagements in the'slots of the second plate.
2. ln devices for the purpose described; a iirst plate formed with an elongated aperture opening on its front and back, and havi ing grooves formed in its back to open on said aperture; a second plate of greater length than the aperture of the first plate and having attenuated end-portions with slots formed therein; and provided interme` diate said attenuated end-portions with an apertured platform; said second plate being` adapted to be mounted with its apertured platform disposed within said elongated aperture, the front and back surfaces of said platform being substantially in alinenieni ivith the respective front and back surfaces of the iirst plate7 its attenuated emi-portions engaging the grooves of said iirst plate: and a keeper traversing a grooved part of: the iirst plate for engagement within a slot of the second plate.
3. In devices for the purpose described, a iirst plate formed with an elongated aperture opening on its front and back; and having grooves formed in its back to open on said aperture; a second plate having` a greater length than the aperture of the iirst plate and formed with attenuated end-portions having slots formed therein, and provided intermediate said attenuated end-portions u'ith an apertured projected part; said second plate being adapted to be mounted with its projected part disposed in said elongated aperture with its attenuated endportions engaging in the grooves of said iii-st plate; and a keeper traversingl each grooved part of the iirst plate ror engagement in a slot of the second plate.
in testimony whereof l have ailixed my signature in presence of tivo ivitnesses.
