Description

entre sransgra'rn'n operon.
WILL T. STOUT, OF KINTA, OKLAHOMA.
COTTON-SACK.
Application filed December 10, 1912.
To u/ unl/om, it may concern lle it known that l, `WILL T. S'roti'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at tiinta, in the county of Haskell and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful improvements in Cotton-Sacks, of which the following is a specification.
Specitically considered the invention relates to an attachment in the nature of a skid or shoe to be applied to a bag or sack such as used when harvesting cotton, the purpose being to prevent the wear and tear on the vsack incident to dragging the same over the ground, to lessen the ettort required to drag the sack since it will glide over the surface more readily and finally to prevent damage to the cotton by discoloration when drawing the sack over the muddy places, since the muddy water prevented from penetrating the sack and discoloring the cotton.
The invention consists of a Shoe orl skid of sheet metal of peculiar formation adapted to be detachably connected with the sack so as to be used with any number', said shoe forming a runner upon which the sack glides when drawn over the field.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illrstrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawing, forming a part of the specification, Figure l is a perspective view of a cotton sack provided with an attachment embodying the invention. Fig. T' is a perspective view of the attachment.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawing, by the sante reference characters.
lhebag or sack l is such as generally used by cotton pickers for receiving the harvest and is adapted to be drawn over the tield in the usual manner. ln accordance with this invention four snap hooks are attached to the upper rear corners and to the lower side of the sack at an intermediate point, the attachment being preferably by means of short straps 3 which are doubled upon themselves and engaged with the loops of the snap hooks and stitched or otherwise secured to the sack. The snap hooks 2 provide convenient means for detachably connecting the skid or shoe e to the under side of the sack. These hooks may also Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 24, 1914. Serial No. 736,037.
be utilized as means for suspending the sack for any purpose or for attaching the same to weighing scales.
The skid or shoe 4 consists of an oblong plate of rectangular form, said plate con Sisting of sheet metal having its edges reinforced to stiften the same. T he reinforcement 5 applied to the front edge of the plate consists of a stout wire or light rod, which is received in a folded portion of the plate, said folded edge being secured in any manner. Openings (3 are formed in the front portion of the plate in the rear of the reinforcement to receive the snap hooks attached to the under side of the sack about midway of its length. The rear and l0ngitudinal edges of the plate are reinforced in any manner either by folding the same or by attaching bars or straps thereto. Openings 7 are formed near the rear corners of the plate to receive the snap hooks attached to the upper rear corners of the sack. The skid or shoe may be formed of galvanized iron. commercial tin or other sheet material pref; Arably of metal best adapted for the purpose.
In the practical application of the invention the shoe is fitted to the under side of the sack at the rear end thereof so as to receive the wear when drawing the sack over the field, it being understood that the front portion of the sack is usually elevated by reason of the outward pull thereon. The shoe prevents wear and tear of the sack and materially reduces the energy required for drawing the sack over the field since the plate will glide over obstructions such as stones, boulders, roots and the like. It is further noted that the shoe will prevent muddy water penetrating the sack when the latter is drawn over marshy ground or soft and muddy places, thereby preventing depreciation of the value of the cotton as is the case when the same becomes stained by muddy water penetrating the sack. The shoe. 'may vbe easily disconnected from one sack and quickly attached to another and in operation prevents the wear and overcomes the cost incident to repairs.
F rom the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the 4art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the inventiomtogether with the device which I now consider' to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are Within the scope of the claim appended hereto.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is v In combination, a cotton pickers sack, snap hooks secured to the upper side of the rear corners of the sack, other snap hooks secured to the under side of the sack about midway of its ends and a skid consistingof an oblong sheet metal plate curved in its length yand having its four edges reinforced 15 and provided near its four corners with Openings to receive the before mentioned snap hooks, Whereb the skid is positively connected to the sach.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 20 in presence of two Witnesses.
