Description

@allotted gieten MOSES W. DILLINGHAM, OF AMSTERDAM, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent N 106,795, dated August 30, 1870.
Hace- IMPROVEMENT IN PENCIL-SHARPENERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it moy concern:
Be it known that I, Moses W. DILLINGHAM, of Allister-dam, in the county of Montgomery and State of' New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in PencilSharpener; and I do hereby deelare that the following is a full, elem', and exact description thereof, which will ena-ble others skilled in the art to make :unl use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part ol' this specification.
This invention relates to a new nml useful improvement in Sharpeners for lead pencils, whereby they are made more convenient and useful than they have hitherto been; and
It consists in forming the shnrpener in two separate principal parts, connected together by :t band and screw nut clasp, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure lisa view ot' one of the halves of the peneil-sharpener;
Figure 2 is the other half;
Figure 3 is a view ofthe artiole complete, the parts being confined together by a hand and screw-nut;
Figure 4 is an end view; and
Figure 5 is a cross-section ol" lig. 3, on the line xx.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the hollow cone, formed by the parts B and C.
D is a band or ring attached to O, which receives the end eot' the part B when the two are put together, as in lig. 3.
F is a ring formed by the two parts, each part having one-half of a screw-tip, g, thereon.
These two tips form a screw, and are confined together by the linger-nut h, as seen in iig. 3.
t'is the knife o1cutter,wl1ieh is attached to the part B. The knife maybe attached to the hollow cone in any manner, either removably or not.
The object in making the Sharpener in two parts, connected together by n screw, and so that they may be entirely separated, is to nlford access to the edge of the knife, for keeping it in good working order, :unl convenience in iluminar-turing. v
l am aware that pencil-sharpeners have been made in two parts before, but such parts have been oonnected permanently together by a hinge. The hinge connection forms no part of my invention.
For various reasons, I prefer to separate the. parts entirely, but do not confine myself to any particular device or inode ot'oonstrnetion for accomplishing that purpose.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A hollow-cone pencil-Sharpener, formed of two principal parts, connected together hy a band and nut, s0 that the two parts may be readily separated, substantially ns and t'or the purposes described.
The above speoilieation of my invention signed by me this 6th day' of July, 1870.
Witnesses: MOSES W. DILLINGHAM.
