CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1 913.
Application filed February 21, 1912. Serial No. 679,194.
To all whom 2'25 may concern.
Be it known that I, lViLMo'r H. lVnLLivnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elmira, in the county of Chcmung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful l niprovements in Cabinets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accon'ipanying drawmgs.
This invention relates to improvements in cabinets and more particularly to a combination music bench and cabinet, the primary object of the invention being to provide a plurality of series of superposed sheet containing drawers mounted in the bench so that convenient access may be had to any one of the drawers by a person seated thereon.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above character which is simple in construction, neat and attractive in appearance, is of great serviceability and convenience in practical use and may be manufactured at comparatively small cost.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construct-ion, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of a combined musicians bench and cabinet, showing one of the series of drawers extended, the other series of drawers being illustrated in elevation and in their closed positions; Fig. 2 is a detail section taken on the line 2:2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the series of drawers.
Referring in detail to the drawing 5 designates a musicians bench or seat comprising a top 6, depending side and end walls 7 and 8 respectively and the supporting legs 9. This bench may be constructed of any of the well known species of woods and may be ornamented in any preferred manner.
The end walls 8 of the bench are provided with openings to receive the series of sheet containing drawers 10. While any desired number of these drawers may be provided in each series, in the illustrated embodiment of the invention I have shown three such drawers arranged in superposed relation, the bottom drawer being provided at its front or outer end with a vertical wall 11 which extends above the side walls of the drawer and closes the opening in the end wall 8 of the cabinet. Upon the side walls 7 of the bench and on their inner faces, guide cleats 19 are suitably secured, said cleats extending inwardly and downwardly from the opposite ends of the bench as clearly shown in Fig. 1. As each series of drawers are constructed and assembled in the same manner, a detail description of one of said series will suilice for both.
The side walls of each of the drawers adjacent their upper edges are provided with longitudinal rubbcts or grooves 13, the grooves in the uppermost drawer receiving the uide cleats 12 upon the opposed side walls 7 of the bench. The side walls of the two upper drawers are also provided upon their inner faces with longitudinally extending rabbets or grooves 14, said grooves 13 and 14- providing longitudinal ribs or shoulders 15 and 1b upon the upper and lower edges respectively of the drawers which are disposed in complementary association with the grooves or rabbets in the upper or lower edges of the respective drawers. The bottoms 17 of the drawers are mortised at their longitudinal edges into the side walls as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Upon the bottom of the lowermost drawer at opposite sides thereof and at its front and rear ends rollers 18 are mounted for movement upon the track bars 19 which are fixed to the inner faces of the side walls 7 of the bench and are dis posed in parallel relation to the guide cleats 12.
From the foregoing the construction and manner of use of my improved combination seat and cabinet will be fully understood. 'lransverse ribs 20 are secured to the under sides of the two upper drawers midway between their opposite ends, and said ribs are adapted to be engaged by the rear walls of the drawers which are immediately below the drawer to which the ribs are attached, thereby limiting the outward movement of the two lowermost drawers and preventing their inadvertent disconnection. In this manner it will be readily seen that a person seated upon the bench 5 may readily reach over at either side of the bench and grasp the handle secured to the front wall 11 of the lower drawer and pull said series of drawers outwardly so that the desired piece of music may be obtained from any one of said drawers, the outer ends of which successively extend beyond the end of the superposed drawer. WVhen the drawers are disposed in their closed positions between the side walls of the seat, the rollers 18 rest upon the track bars 19 so that the upper guide cleats 12 are relieved of the entire weight of the drawers.
A device constructed in accordance with the present invention as above set forth is highly convenient in practical use and will admit of the musician obtaining a desired piece of music without moving from his position upon the piano bench or seat.
By means of the present invention the ordinary music cabinet now in common use may be dispensed with. The superposed arrangement of the drawers permits of a large number of music sheets being contained in a comparatively restricted space.
While I have shown and described the preferred form and arrangement of the various parts, it will be understood that the device is susceptible of considerable modification without departing from the essential feature or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is The combination with a bench or seat having side walls and longitudinally inclined upper and lower parallel bars secured upon said side walls, of a series of superposed drawers arranged between the side walls of the seat, the uppermost drawer being slidably mounted upon the upper inclined bars, said drawers being slidable upon each other and adapted to be extended beyond the ends of the side walls of the seat, said drawers when in their extended positions being wholly supported upon the upper inclined bars, transverse stop cleats secured to the bottom walls of the upper gagement by the rear walls of the next lower drawers to limit the outward movement of the latter drawers and rollers mounted upon the loi'vermost drawer to rest upon the lower inclined bars when the drawers arein their closed positions between the side walls of the seat to'relieve the upper bars of the weight of the drawers.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. WVILMOT H. WELLIVER.
