BABY-CRIB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 19, 1911.
Patented May 6, 1913.
Serial No. 650,233.
To all. whom t may concern Be it knownthat I, FRANKLIN M. SAW- YER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City,'in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baby- Cribs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to portable folding baby cribs of that type adapted to be supported at one end by a hook, from the back of a seat and to be folded up in very small compass when not in use, and my obj ect is to produce a crib of this character of simple and cheap construction. v
VVit-h this object in view the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and organization as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1, is a perspective View of a baby crib embodying the invention. Fig. 2, is a vertical sect-ion on the line II-II of Fig. 1 with the sides of the crib in pendent position. Fig. 3, is an enlarged horizontal section on the line III-III of Fig. 1.
In the said drawing, a rectangular frame of proper length and width for a crib, consists of theside bars 1 and end bars 2. 3 indicates the bottom of the body, the same consisting of side bars 4 and cross bars 5, the bars being preferably of such size as to be more or less resilient. The bottom is of substantially the same length as the frame and slightly narrower, and secured to the side bars 4 and curving downwardly therefrom are .spring plates 6 terminating in hooks 7 to hook over the end bars 2 of the frame and support the bottom in a slightly higher plane than the frame.
8 indicates a leg frame, consisting of eX- tensible legs 9 and cross bars 10, and the legs of said frame are disposed at the inner sides of the side bars of the first-named frame and pivoted thereto at 11, so as to be capable when folded to a horizontal position of lying between the side bars of the firstnamed frame, the eXtensible legs each consisting of two sections fitting flatly together, one provided with a longitudinal rib 12 and the other with a groove 13 receiving the rib to hold the sections in alinement, and to clamp them at the desired point of adjustment so that they may stand vertical when the frame is disposed at the desired heightfrom the floor, sleeve clamps 14 fit around juxtaposed members of the legs and are engaged at their ends by clamping bolts 15.
16 indicates the sides of the crib, the same consisting of bottom rails 17 and top rails 18, connected by bars or rounds 19, and to connect the said sides pivotally to the side bars of the first-named frame, U-shaped clips 2() extend into the ends of the side bars of the first-named frame and the bottom bars of the sides as shown-clearly in Fig. 1.
`By this arrangement it will be seen that the clips are capable of turning in the ends of bars 1 so that the sides can stand vertically under said bars as in Fig. 2, or may be swung from the position shown in said iigure, upwardly and inwardly to a horizontal position below the first-named frame, the direct-ion of the last-named swinging movement of the sides being indicated by arrows in Fig. 2. To secure the sides in upright or operative position, the top rails 18 are provided near their foot ends with holes 21, to receive the depending hook ends 22 of the cross rod 23 as shown in Fig. 1, and to preveiit the bottom rails 17 of the sides swinging,` downward and outward accidentally when the sides are upright, hooks 24 fit slidingly on a pair of the rounds or bars 19 and are adapted for engagement with holes 25 'in the side bars 4f of the bottom, as shown in Fig. 1. o support the front end of the crib and also to anchor the same from endwise movement, a piece of heavy wire is doubled to form the double-arm hanger 26, adapted to hook over the back of a chair, car seat or like object, and the ends of the arms terminate'in hooks 27 to engage the front end cross bar 2 of the rectangular frame, t-he length of the hanger 26 being preferably shorter than the back sothat when the crib is arranged upon a seat such as at 28, the crib shall be supported above the bottom of the seat, the legs being adjusted properly to support the bottom in a horizontal position.
A crib of this character arranged as shown in Fig. 1, may project over the seat from which the crib is hung at one end and over the space between such seatA and the seat forward of the same and yet leave ample room for the person in charge to occupy the remaining part of the seat from which the crib is suspended. the arrangement providing for the comfort of both the child and person in charge as will be readil seen.
so that it shall weigh but little and for convenience of portage it can be folded into small compass so that it may be readily carried in one hand or under the arm. To fold the crib, the`hanger26 is first detached. The leg is then swung up under the bottom and between the sides of the rectangular frame. The hook 24 is then detached from one of the sides and swung pivotally on its opposite end so as to lie upon the Vother side and lthe last-named side is preferably provided with an extra hole 29 to receive the depending hook portion of the rod which when in operative position engages the hole 23 of the other side. The sides are then permitted to swing to the pendent position shown in Fig. 2, and from such position are swung up, under the folded legs. After it is thus folded, the hanger is placed upon the bottom so that the crib as a Whole shall occupy but little space and may be conveniently carried.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a portable folding baby crib embodying the features of advantage enumerated as desirable, and I Wish it to be understood that I reserve the right to make all chan-ges properly falling within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A crib, comprising a rectangular frame, a bottom upon said frame, sides having bottom bars parallelling and adjacent to the sides of the rectangular frame, U-shaped clips pivotally connectingthe extremities of adjacent side bars of the rectangular frame with the bottom bars of the sides so that the latter may swing from a posit-ion vertically above to a position below the end bars of said rectangular frame, and an extensible leg frame arranged between the side bars of the rectangular frame and pivoted at its upper end to said side bars.
' In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANKLIN M. SAWYER.
