REFRIGERATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 8,1913.
Application filed January 12, 1912. Serial No. 670,892.
To aZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, THEoDoRE L. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Refrigerators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to refrigerators, and has for its object to provide an article of this character with a water compartment for collecting the water from the ice pan after the same passes through the drip pipe, thus eliminating the use of a separate pan for this purpose which is usually placed beneath the refrigerator.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4L is a sectional view on line 1r-4C of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the' outer wall and 2 the sheet metal inner wall, the same being spaced from the wall l fo-r receiving a suitable packing, all of which being of the usual construction.
Secured wit-hin the inner wall 2, and near the upper end thereof is a drip pan 3, the same being formed from metal. Detachably connected to the pan 3 is an ice rack 4. Leading from the rear edge of the drip pan 3 is a drip pipe 5, the same extending downwardly and terminating a short distance above the false bottom 6. `Formed in the bottom 6 is an opening 7, andl in which is slidably mounted a sleeve 8, the same being telescopically connected t the lower end of the drip pipe .5, whereby said sleeve'may be moved upwardly so that the bottom 6 may be removed from the guide-ways 9 secured upon the inner sides of the inner wall 2.
The lower end of the inner side wall eX- tends below the false bottom 6 and is provided with an inclined bottom 6', thereby forming a collecting chamber l0 for the drip water.
Having communication with the chamber 10 is a cock 11 which permits the water from the same to be drawn olf as desired. A .glass covered sight opening 12 is provided for the chamber 10, so that the accumulation of water therein may be observed.
A plurality of galvanized wire mesh shelves 13 are detachably mounted within the inner wall 2, and upon which articles to be cooled are placed, access to the interior of the inner wall being had through the door opening 14:, the same being closed by swinging door 15.
A lid 16 is hingedly connected to the top of the device so that ice may be placed upon the rack 4.
From this construction it will be seen that a refrigerator has been produced which utilizes the drip water for cooling articles therein upon water gravitating to the chamber 10, said chamber being easily cleaned upon moving the sleeve 8 upwardly, whereupon the false bottom 6 may be removed.
What is claimed is:
A refrigerator comprising an outer wall, an inner wall spaced from the outer wall, a drip pan mounted in the upper end of the inner wall, a pair of guides carred by the inner wall, a false bottom removably engaged by the guides, the lower end of the inner wall being extended below the .guides and false bottom to form a chamber, a drip pipe leading from the pan and having its lower end spaced above the false bottom, an opening formed in said bottom, a sleeve telescopically connected to the lower end of the pipe and engaging in the opening, whereby when said sleeve is moved upwardly the false bottom may be removed from its guides, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
THEODORE LEONARD SMITH.
