HAIR-SIN GER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25, 19.13.
Application filed November 4, 1912. 7 Serial No 729,440.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, EDWARD H. -Emim'xm,
. a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Corpus Christi, in the county of Neuces and State of Texas, have invented a new and 1 Improved Hair-Singer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates generally to electrical. devices, and more particularly to 'a hair singer of new and improved construction.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a hair singer which is adapted to ease and rapidity of operation, and characterized by a pocket adapted to receive the smoke resulting from singeing hair, thereby doing away with odors, there being a reduction of pressure within the pocket and maintained by any suitable means.
A further object of the, invention is the provision of a hair singer having a heating element adapted to engage the hair as it is lifted or raised by means of a comb or sir'nilar article, whereby the ends thereof may be singed, the burned material and smoke resulting therefrom being carried into the pocket in the device and conducted away.
Reference is to be-had to the accompanying drawings forminga part of this specification, in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a bottom plan view, partly in section; Fig. ,2 is a vertical sectional view of the device; while Fig. 3 is a vertical lon-.
gitudinal View through the heating element. The device comprises a casmg 1 having one side open, there bemg a nozzle 2 extending from the top of the casing and com- "fnunicating with the interior thereof,. the
nozzle terminating in a handle 3' adapted to receive an electric cord the said cord also passingthrough the nozzle 2 into the interior of the casing and being in electricalcircuit with the heating element. The casing is also provided with an upstanding portion 5 having a passageway 6 extending therethrough, which passageway communi- 4 cates with a pipe or tube 7 leading to a suitable pressure reducing apparatus, whereby when the deviceis in operative relation on, top of a persons head the pressure of the air within the pocket formed the casing l'niay be reduced.
The interior of the casing 1 is preferably lined with-an asbestos member 8 whereby The heating element (Figs. 2 and preitv erably comprises a hollow body having opposite sides 910, the longitudinal central portion having openings 11 passing therethrough,'whereby the outside of the singer may communicate with the interior of the casing 1; within the space includedbetween the sides '9 and 10, which coiiperate to form a box-like structure, is the heating element proper 12, mounted in suitable insulating material13, the heating element preferably comprising a continuous length of fine wire of highresistance or other material of high resistance qualities, bent to the shape shown in Fig. 1, .or any other convenient shape, the ends of the wire being connected to the cord 4 through the medium of the wires 14.
As shown particularly in Fig. 1, the heating element as a Whole is mounted between portions of the asbestos hning 8 of the casing, the casing being provided, if so desired, with inwardly extending shoulders 15 with which the asbestos engages, final assemblage of the parts being maintained by means of the lugs 16 carried by the casing l, and held in removable engagement therewith by means of the screws 17.
Referring particularly to Fig. 1, it will be noted that in addition to the openings 11 which extend through the heating element, the peripheral portions of the element are spaced from the inner-wall of the casing 1, whereby a continuous passageway 18 is provided which extends substantially around the periphery of thei'iasing save where the lugs 16 are placed.
In usethe singer 1S grasped by the handle 3, and after the current has been suppliedable pressure reducing apparatus, so thatas the device is passedover the head and the ends of the hair singed, the resultlng smoke, together with the odor due thereto,
is prevented from spreading into the atmosphere because of the draft created through the openings 11 and the passageway 18,
5 which draft carries the smoke and odor, and any products of combustion, into the interior of the (Easing, and, if desired, through the tube or pipe 7 to a suitable receptacle or out of doors. The fact that the heating element may be easily removed, being thereby replaceable, is of great advantage in small'electrical devices, since such elements are liable to wear and deterioration before the remaining structure of the device is in any way prevented from further continuing to serve the purpose for which it was intended.
It is, of course, clear that while the drawings show substantially the size, shape and form of the device, and the component parts thereof, various changes may be made in details of constructionin the productioi oj electric hair singers, thereby providing devices of Varying sizes and shapes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A hair singer comprising a hollow casinghaving an open side and provided with 3 a handle, the handle being adapted to concopies at this patent may be obtained whereby when the device is in use the reduction of pressure within the casing will create a draft, whereby the products of combustion will pass into the casing and thence through the said passageway.
2. A hair singer comprising a hollow casing having an open side and provided with a handle, the handle being' adapted to convey an electric conductor to the interior of the casing, a passageway formed in the casing and adapted tobe placed in communication with a pressure reducing apparatus, a heating element having openings therein carried adjacent the open side of the casing, openings between the casing and the said heating element, -)fl y when thedevice is in use the hairmay besii'i'ged -b'y-- -v being brought into engagement with 'the said element, the products of combustion passing into the casing and thence through the said passageway, thereby being prevented from spreading in the atmosphere.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
EDWARD H. ELDRIDGE.
