To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FREDoLE J. PETERSON,
a subject of the King of Sweden, residing' at Salem, in the county of Columbiana' and State of Ohio, have invented a new and.
useful Credit-Register, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for filing, storing and handling credit slips, records, blanks, memorandums, papers, samples and the like in an orderly manner, such devices being especially convenient and well adapted for use in mercantile establishments, and when so used commonly called credit registers.
The objects of the invention are to generally improve devices of the character mentioned, to simplify the construction and at the same time increase stability and efficiency in such devices; convenience and ease of operation being also attained.
These objects, together with other objects readily apparent to those skilled in the art, l attain by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, although my invention may be embodied in other forms, the construction illustrated being chosen by way of example.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken on a plane extending from front to rear of a credit register embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the detachable leaf connecting devices showing the parts thereof in disconnected position. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of one of the detachable leaf connecting devices showing the parts connected and a fragmentary portion of the front leaf properly attached thereto. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view through the sliding stem of the rear leaf holder, also showing one of the stem keepers. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the upper end of one of the rear leaf holders. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view in perspective showing one of the upper corners of the rear leaf. Fig. 7 is a front elevation of the register, with the front and lower portions broken away and showing the leaves detached. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the lever retaining hooks. Fig. 9 is a fragmentary perspective view on a vertical front and rear plane showing a portion of the bed of the register, and the location and relation of the retaining hook and the lever.
Throughout the several views similar reference numerals indicate similar parts.
For the purpose of providing a supporting frame and containing device for the register proper a cabinet is provided, that form of cabinet illustrated in the drawings being the preferable construction.
The numeral 1 indicates the back, 2 the sides and 3 the top of the cabinet. Extend ing from side to side and held in place by the back 1 and sides 2 is a supporting shelf 4, the glass bed 5 extending from the shelf 4 to the front edge of the cabinet, said bed 5 being arranged slightly below the plane of the shelf 4.
The credit slip holding leaves 6 are hinged together along their bottom edges by means of the hinges 7 in the manner well known to those skilled in the art, said leaves thus constituting a series, the front leaf of said series being indicated by t-he numeral 8 and thel rear leaf being indicated by the numeral 9 in the drawing. Attached to the front leaf 8 at the lower edge are the spaced knuckles 10 for the purpose hereinafter described. y
For the purpose of detachably connecting the series of credit slip holding leaves to the shelf 4 connecting devices are employed, the preferable construction including two of such devices arranged at the location of the hinge connections of the series of leaves. Each connecting device comprises a base member adapted to be aflixed to the shelf 4, and an upper removable member adapted to be connected to the front leaf 8. The base member is provided with the attaching flanges 11 adapted to rest upon the shelf 4 and having screw apertures 12 for the reception of attaching screws. Formed integrally with the flanges 1l are the spaced pin retaining fianges 13 defining a rounded bottom groove extending transversely from side to side of the device. At one side a hood or cap 14 is formed integrally with the flanges 13 whereby to produce a barrel 15 into which the free end of the connecting pin 16 of the upper member of the connecting device may be inserted. The flanges 13, as will be readily seen from an inspection of Figs. 2 and 3, are not of uniform height from side to side of the device but are considerably higher at thatv side opposite the hood 14.

The upper vice comprises a body portion 17 formed integrally with the pin 16 on the under side of said body portion, said pin 16 having at one end a free extending portion formed completely round in crosssection. The pin 16 from end to end is adapted to fit into the barrel 15 and the groove between the fianges 13, and integral complementary retaining fianges 18 are adapted to rest upon the tops of the flanges 13, saidflanges 18 having4 their under faces inclined to ,conform to the inclination of the ytops of the fianges 13. Formed integrally with the body 17 is the upwardly extending knuckle portion 19 adapted to be arranged between the knuckles 10 on the front leaf 8, a pintle 20 extending through the knuckles 10 and 19 to produce a hinge connection between the leaf 8 and the upper member of the connecting device.
The two base members of the connect-ing devices are attached to the shelf 1- with the grooves between the flanges 13 transversely disposed and with the hoods 14 of the two members turned toward the same side of the cabinet. This arrangement is shown lin members of the connecting devices having been connected to the leaf 8 by the pintles 2O as described it will be understood that the entire series of credit slip holding leaves may be connected to the supporting shelf 4 by bringing the upper members of the connecting devices into engagement with the base members, and inserting the free rounded portions of the pins 16 into the barrels 15 by a transverse movement of the entire series of leaves, and allowing the flanges 18 to rest upon the anges 13. 1t will be understood that the series of leaves, being substantially constructed, and usually containing credit slips or other records or objects, will be of sufficient weight to hold the upper members of the connecting devices down upon the base members, and the upper edges of the Hanges 13 being inclined downwardly toward the hoods 14 and receiving the reversely inclined flanges 18, will hold the upper and base members in proper relative position until such time as it may be desired to disconnect them, when the leaves may be moved transversely and at the same time lifted to free the pins 16 from the hoods 14.
As is well known to those skilled in the art it is necessary to have any leaf of the series readily accessible to the operator by turning said leaf or leaves forwardly or downwardly as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. In order to maintain the leaves in proper position and yet permit the rear leaf 9 to move `upwardly and downwardly as the various leaves are turned forward and down vertically slidable rear leaf holders are provided. Itis preferable -to employ two of such rear leaf holders, and such is the construction l have illustrated. Description of one of said holders will suffice for both. Each rear leaf holder comprises a vertical stem 21 slidably mounted in keepers formed of sheet metal, each keeperhaving a back 22 and a front, offset portion 23 formed integrally with said back, said back and front being made from a single strip folded at 211 and provided with apertures for the reception of the attaching screws 25. It
will be noted that byY this construction the stem 21 will be held` spaced 'from the portion of the cabinet, preferably a false back 26, to which the keepers are attached, thus permitting the said stem to slide freely up and down in said keepers. At the Jupper end and above the upper keeper the stem is offset or bent forward from the false back 26 to the point 27, where the stem is again bent upwardly and slightly forwardly, terminating in a forwardly extending open inverted hook portion 28. The inner surface of said hook Iportion is preferably rounded to form a bearing, and the upper edge of the rear leaf 9 is provided with a roll 29, preferably lying wholly to the rear of the plane of the leaf, as illustrated in Fig. 6. The roll 29 is of such diameter as to fit within the curved hook portion 28 as illustrated in Fig. 1. For the purpose of retaining the roll 29 within the hook por* tion 28 a latch pin 30 is provided, ,which pin is {ixedly connected to a spring 31, said spring having its lower end lixedly connected to the stem of the holder by means such as the rivets 32 and having its upper end formed with a backwardly extending, inverted finger hook 33, said nger hook being preferably arranged in a higher plane than the hook portion 28. Through the stem 21 just below the hook portion 28 extends an aperture 311 which slidably receives the latch pin 30, the spring 31 being adapted to normally hold the latch pin 30 extended-forwardly through said aperture as shown in Fig. 1. In such position said pin is adapted to lie immediately below the roll 29, preventing said roll from dropping downward out of engagement with the hook portion 28. It should be notedV that when it is desired to disconnect the roll 29 from the hook portion 28 the finger of the operator may be readily placedY within the finger hook33, when by a backward movement 'of the linger the spring 31 may be forced backwardly, thus drawing the pin 30 backwardly through the aperture as illustrated in Fig. 5, at which time the operator may, by lifting his finger, move the stem upwardly and vthus disengage the holder from the rear leaf. It should also be noted that the'forward free end of the -latch pin 30-isbeveled so as to permit the roll 29 to be readily seated within the hook port on 28 by a pressure of the roll 29 backward and upward against the end of the pin 30 in the manner well known in latch construction.
For the purpose of normally maintaining the front leaf 8 in vertical position as shown in full lines in Fig. l, and for the purpose of counter-acting the weight of the leaves as they are moved forwardly and downwardly into the position illustrated in dotted lines in said figure the retaining levers 35 are provided. Each retaining lever comprises a main body portion 36 pivotally connected intermediate its ends at the point 37 to the side of the cabinet and provided at its forward end with an upwardly and backwardly extending leaf engaging portion 38 provided at its extreme end with the leaf engaging roller 39, said roller adapted to move over the surface of the wear plate 40 on the front leaf 8 as the leaves are moved on their pivotal connections. The spring 4l is attached to the end of the lever 36 opposite the end 38 and to a fixed portion of the cabinet said spring being adapted to normally force the end 38 upwardly and backwardly to retain the leaves in place and counter-balance the weight thereof when moved, as just described.
It will be understood that when it is desired to remove the series of leaves from the cabinet to place them in a safe or other secure place over night, or when for any other reason it is desired to remove the series of leaves from or insert them into the cabinet it is desirable that the retaining levers be held out of engagement with the leaves so that they may not impede the operation of removal or insertion as the case may be. For the purpose of temporarily holding the ends 38 of said levers in their extreme forward and downward position the retaining hooks 42 are provided. Each hook comprises a body portion 43 having formed integrally therewith a laterally projecting finger piece 44 and an attaching and space` ing boss 45 extending to the opposite side of the body 43 from the linger piece 44. An
aperture 46 extends through the body and the boss 45 and is adapted to receive the attaching pivot screw 47 screwed into the side 2 and providing pivotal attachment for the hook. At the opposite end of the body portion is the lever engaging hook 48 adapted to engage the stud 49 upon which the roller 39 is mounted. Froman inspection of Fig. 9 it will be seen that the end 38 of the retaining lever may be pushed forwardly and downwardly until the lever engaging hook 48 may be brought into engagement with the stud 49, when the retaining lever will be held in the position shown in Fig. 9 until such time as the retaining hook may be lifted and pivotally moved by grasping the linger piece 44 and throwing the hook pivotally upon its connecting screw 47. A retaining hook of this character is provided on each side of the cabinet, provision thus being made for holding both of the levers in their forward and downward position whenever desired,
I claim:
In a credit register, in combination with a cabinet and a series of credit slip holding leaves therein, the rear leaf of said series provided with a roll at its upper edge, all substantially as described; a rear leaf holder comprising, a vertically disposed stem vertically slidably connected to said cabinet, the upper end of said stem frontwardly off-set and terminating in a forwardly extending, open, inverted hook portion adapted to receive said roll, and spring-controlled means connected to said stem below said hook portion and adapted to normally retain said roll in said hook portion, said means adapted to be actuated to permit disengagement of said roll from said hook portion at any point within the limits of vertical movement of said stem. v
