Anvrrtrrsmo DEVICE.
I Specification of Letters Patent.
- Pateneedme. 17, 1912.
Application filed October 28, 1911.. s ria1:no.:'657,'240.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGEE. FRANCIS, a
. citizen of the United States, residing at changed at intervals so as to bringdififerent 'matter in position for observation.
The invention contemplates a framework to be suspended from the shoulders of aperson, advertisements mounted upon' the framework .in position for advantageous display, and operating means actuated by the person when in motion'to effect a shifting of the advertising matter to bring different notices in view to be read.
The invention further contemplates a motor or operating mechanism embodying an actuating device to beconnected to the I log of the person to be oscillated when the person is in motion, an advertisingmechanism and a train of gearing between the advertising matter and the actuating means including a trip mechanism which is operated at given intervals to-insure a quick change from one advertisement to the other and also to provide ample movement to bring the next advertisement in full View for observation. v
The inventionconsists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
" Referring to the drawings, forming a part of the. specification, Figure 1 is a side view of an advertising device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a front view. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a side portion of the de-v vice, showing the parts on a larger scale, the top of the casing inclosing the motor and adjunctive parts being removed. Fig; 4: is a 'view in elevation of the parts illustrated in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a side view showing in diagram the arrangement of the ad vertising strips, the supporting pulleys therefor and the drive connections.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following descriptiom and; indi: cated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters,
The framework of the device comprises similarcasings 1 anda cross piece, 2, the
latter connecting the casings 1 at their up per ends. Shoulder straps 3 haveytheir endsattached'to the upper ends of "the cas ings 1 and are iadapted to support the device upon theshoulders of a person. The
cross piece 2 is preferably. located at one sideofthedevice and serves to hold the casingsapart a fixed relative distance. A box or casing i is provided midway of the ends of the crosspiece 2 ;and contains the motor and driving mechanism. A bracket 5 is pendent from the cross piece and supports a pendulum rod 6 which is adapted to be connected at its lower end to the leg of the person carrying the device so that in opera-1 tion an: oscillatory movement is imparted to the pendulum rod for winding up the motor spring. A strap 7 or like connecting device is fitted to the lower end of the pendulum rod for attaching the same to the limb. The upper end. of the pendulum rod is provided with a spring actuated dog 8 which is-pivotedthereto and, engages the teeth of a ratchet wheel 9, which is mounted 7 upon a shaft 10 to which one end ofzthe motor spring 11 is attached, the opposite end of said motor spring being secured to a drum or barrel 12. The ratchet wheel 9 is prevented from turning backward by means of a detent13, which is pivotally connected to a stud and is arranged to engage the teeth,
of the ratchet wheel. A tooth 14 rotatable with the ratchet wheel 9 and shaft 10 is" adapted to engage an arm 15 pivoted at one end to a stud 16 and having a projeoting part to engage a stop 17 carried by the drum or barrel l2. The arm 15 is tripped at regular intervals so as to release the drum or barrel 12 and admit of the same making a revolution. The arm 15 is acted upon by means of a spring which holds the projecting or stop portion thereof in engagement with the stop 17 to hold the drum 12 against I rotation during the winding of the motor spring. The tooth lt may form a part of the ratchet wheel 9 or may be secured to the shaft 10 in any manner so as to rotate there- 1 with. The drum or barrel 12 has a circular series of cog teeth 18 which are in mesh with cog teeth of pinions 19 secured to shafts 20 upon which are secured grooved pulleys 21.
The advertising matter is located within each of the casings 1 and may be of any nature. For the sake of illustration a strip 22 is shown and is arranged to travel about a series of pulleys 23 and 2 1 at opposite ends of the casing. The strip 22 is provided with the advertising matter to be displayed. and is moved a distance at each operation of the motor to bring the next advertisement in position for observation and to carry the advertisement previously displayed out of sight so that only one advertisement appears at a time. One of the rollers 24 has a grooved pulley 25 and a drive belt 26 passes around the pulleys 21 and 25 so as to transmit motion from the driving mechanism to the strip or advertising device. The casing 1 is closed with the exception of its front, which is open to admit of the advertisement being read.
When the appliance is in service it is arranged upon the person with one of the casings in front and the other in the rear, the head passing between the shoulder straps 3, which latter engage and rest upon the shoulders. The cross piece 2 is arranged so as to clear the shoulder and the pendulum rod 6 is attached to the leg so that when the person is walking an oscillatory movement is imparted to the pendulum rod which results in an intermittent movement of the shaft 10 and a winding of the motor spring 11. At the proper interval usually corresponding to a complete revolution of the shaft 10 the dog 14 trips the arm 15 and releases the barrel or drum 12 which makes a complete revolution, the arm 15 engaging the stop 17 so as to hold the drum when it has made a complete revolution. As the drum 12 rotates the shafts 20 have a rotary movement imparted thereto and by reason of the drive belts 26 the advertising strip or other device is moved so as to change the matter at each operation of the motor.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together wit-h the device which I now consider to be the embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim appended hereto.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
An advertising appliance comprising front and rear casings, advertising devices located within the casings, shoulder straps attached to the casings for supporting the appliance upon the shoulders of a person, a cross piece arranged at one side of the casings and connecting the upper ends thereof and having a pendent bracket, a box mounted upon the cross piece, a spring motor located within the box, connecting means between the motor and the advertising devices contained in the said casings, a pendulum rod pivoted to the before mentioned pendent bracket, a ratchet wheel and pawl between the pendulum rod and motor spring for winding the latter, an arm for engaging the spring barrel to prevent movement thereof, and a dog rotatable with the ratchet wheel and adapted to trip the said arm to release the said motor at predetermined intervals.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE E. FRANCIS.
