We, Cannes '1. DURHAM, JAMES W001), and in the county of Montgomery and State, of Pennsylvania, have inyvented certain Improvements in Gauge-Knives for i V Qutting Leather, of whieh'thefollowing is aspecification.
The nature of our invention consists of a slotted stock and knife, and. guide adjustable therein, the
knife having a handle constructed with its shank for tightening it to the .stockin any adjusted position,
as hereinafter described. v
To enable others, skilled in the art to which our improvementappertains to make and use our invention, we willnow give 'a detailed description. thereof.

A is a slotted stock for holding the knife B and adjustable'gnide 0. l
. The knife is shown in detail in fig. 3.
The square a. of its shank is provided with a ferrule, D, which has ribs, 12, fitting in the rebate d of the stock A, as seen by ,dotted lines in fig. 2, so as \to make the knife adjustable in any part of the stock, whereby the latter may be equally balanced in cutting narrow strips of leather, thus overcoming the difficulty usually experienced by having the knife stationary.
The ferrule is shown in detail in figs. 4 and 5.
The round part 0 of the knife-shank is provided with a nut, j; which is made fast in the handle, E, as represented by dotted lines in fig. 1, so that, by taking hold of the handle with one hand and the stock 1 with the other, theknife may be loosened for adjustment at any part of the stock A, and-then secured by a reversed motion of the hand.
The adj ustable guide 0 has a slide, 9, seen in fig. 6, that fits in the slot h of the stock A, so as to make the guide adjustable at any point desired.
G is a thumb-screw, which passes through the hole j of the guide, and is secured by means of the sliding nut. H, whose ribs, It It, seen in figs. 7 and, 8, fitin the rebate d of the stock A. i
There is a dial on the top edge of the stock A to render the adjustment of the guide expeditious for the cutting of any desired width of strips. w What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-- The combination of the adjustable knife B, having a tightening-handle, E, adjustable guide F, and slotted stock A, the several parts being constructed and Witnesses: e THOMAS J.
