To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosnPH Pnsnn, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Schuyler, in the county of Colfax and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Autogun Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for guns and more particularly to attachments for automatic guns.
One object of the present invention is to provide an attachment for guns of this character which when applied to the gun shall prevent dust, grit, or any foreign material from entering the gun.
A further object of the invention is to construct a device of this character which may be easily and quickly attached to the gun and which shall be simple in construction, and eflicient and positive in operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification; Figure l is a side elevation of a gun showing the device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 33, the attachment being removed from the gun.
Similar reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing in which I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, A designates the device which comprises relatively movable metallic sections or plates 1 and 2 slightly curved in cross section so as to conform to the usual curvature of the gun at one side of the receiver. The plate 1 has its lateral edges curved to form guide ways 3 which latter receive the plate 2 so that the plate 1 may be moved longitudinally thereof is will be hereinafter described.
Adjacent its outer end the plate 1 is prorided with a substantially rectangular openng 4 provided upon its lateral side walls vith outwardly projecting ears 5 and deigned to receive a lateral extension 6 on the reech bolt of the gun. Each of the ears 5 ,nd the extension 6 on the breech bolt are rovided with alining openings designed to eceive set screws 7 carried by the openings 1 the cars so that the device may be rigidly secured tothe gun, the connection also serv ing to permit the plate 1 to be slid upon the plate 2 in the operation of the breech bolt for the purpose of removing the plate 1 from the breech opening as will be readily understood.
Mounted upon the exterior surface of the plate 1 is a cylindrical casing 8 in which is mounted a helical expansion spring 9, one end of the casing 8 being closed by a removable plug lO. Adjacent its rear end the plate 1 is provided with an elongated slot 11 which latter alines with a similar slot 12 formed in the casing 8, both of these slots being adapted to receive an operating pin 13 arranged upon the forward end of the inner section 2 of the attachment.
The gun at the rear of the breech opening therein is provided with a stop pin 14 designed to be engaged by the rear end of the section 2 to prevent movement of the said section relative to the section 1 in the operation of the device.
Assuming the device to be applied to a gun as described, the operation is as follows: Upon the breech bolt pin 6 of the gun being pulled in a rearward direction to effect the removal of an exploded cartridge, the plate 1 will be simultaneously operated and slid rearwardly of the gun and over the plate 2, in which position of the plates the spring 9 will be compressed within the casing 8. When the breech bolt 6 of the gun is returned to its normal position, the spring 9 will act upon the pin 13 of the section 2 thereby forcing the section 1 over the breech opening in the gun whereby the interior mechanism of the gun will be closed to the entrance of foreign matter, the pin 14 in the operation of the device serving to prevent rearward movement of the section 2 in the movement of the section 1.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat cut is:
1. The combination with a gun including the breech bolt, breech opening and a lateral extension on said bolt, of a dust guard for the breech opening, said guard comprising a stationary plate, a movable plate slidable on the first plate and provided with an aperture having ears formed integral with the opposite walls thereof and receiving said lateral extension, means for securing said ears to said extension whereby the guard is held to the gun, a casing carried by said the stationary plate and formed with an elongated slot, and an opening adjacent the slot, ears formed integral with the walls of the opening, means for securing said ears to the lateral extension, a casing carried by said movable plate, a spring within said cas- 7 ing and having one end abutting the adjaw cent end of the casing, and a pin carried by said stationary plate and extending through 30 the elongated slot in the movable plate and in engagement with the free end of the spring whereby in the movement of the movable plate to uncover the breech opening said spring will be compressed to return the mov- 35 able plate to its normal position.

2.
