lllTll jD srarss PATENT li ll l OE.
GEORGE VJ. BAKER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SHOE.
1,9 fills,
To all whom "it may concern;
Be it known that I, Gnonen W. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the borough of Brooklyn and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lm rovements in Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and. exact description.
This invention relates to footwear and more particularly to ladies shoes, and has for one of its objects the provision of means upon a high-cut shoe for imparting thereto, when in use and when the shoe upper is substantially covered by the skirt of the wearer, the appearance of a low-cut shoe.
Another object of my invention is to protect the lower portion of the shoe-upper and especially the line of closure thereof from dust and dirt and to effectually conceal such dust as may accumulate around, for example, the loops in a shoe lacing which are normally undisturbed when applying the shoe to, or removing it from the foot of the wearer.
These and other objects of the invention will be hereinafter referred to and the novel combination of parts whereby the same may be attained will be more particularly set forth in the claim appended hereto.
In the drawing which forms a part here of and in which like reference characters designate like parts in the respective views, I have exemplified preferred constructions of my device. I am aware, however, that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention and hence desire to be limited only by the scope of said claim.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ladies laced shoe. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a buttoned shoe.
Referring to Fig. 1, the shoe therein shown is, in appearance, in so far as the lower portion or vamp 2 thereof is concerned, a low cut shoe; being provided with a decorative device in the form of a buckle 3, or the like, and a shielding tab or tongue 4 projecting up from below the latter. The vamp may be, for example, of patent leather and the tab or tongue may be, and preferably is, of the same or similar material, so as to be sufliciently stiff to hold its shape. To the top of this lower portion 2 is stitched the shoe upper, or ankle inclosing portion 5, so that the ankles of the wearer are protected and Specification of Letters Patent.

supported thereby in the usual manner. The upper may be of cloth or other suitable material; being made, if desired of material resembling that of a stocking.
The shoe upper has the usual closure line 6, the edges of which may be held in proper relationship by a shoe lace 7, or the like; or the upper may be of the buttoned type as shown in Fig. 2, the buttons in this figure being designated 8.
The tongue 4L- serves to impart to the shoe the appearance, when on the foot of the wearer, and more especially when her skirt substantially covers the shoe upper, of a lowcut shoe; covering, as it does, the portion of the closure line with its fastening means, 6. 9., lace or buttons, which would ordinarily be exposed from beneath the edge of the skirt. The tab or tongue in question, however, serves the further purpose of protecting the lower portion of the closure from dust and dirt.
When one wears a laced shoe, usually the bottom two or three loops or more of the lace are seldom disturbed, it being sufiicient to loosen the upper loops when it is desired to draw the shoe on or to remove the same. The space between these loops and the space between the edges of the closure are pecul iarly susceptible to the collection of dust owing to their exposed position upon the foot of the wearer; and the covering tab or tongue not only conceals these loops in manner aforesaid but quite effectually prevents the accumulation of dust therein; while if dust or dirt does find its way into these cavities it will be unnoticed owing to the presence of the tongue thereabove. When the shoe is of the button type, as shown in Fig. 2, the tab still serves to impart to the shoe the appearance of low-cut footwear, the tab concealing the lowermost button or buttons.
If desired, a bow may be substituted for the buckle in the manner shown in Fig. 2, wherein small laterally extending tabs 9 project toward each other from points adjacent the bottom of the tongue at and said tabs 9 may be provided with eyelets 10 through which may be passed a ribbon 11, or the like, to form the bow above referred to. F or clearness of illustration the how has been shown in dotted lines; and the line of jointure 12 of the tongue to the vamp, and the tabs 9 have hence been shown in full.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is:
A high-cut shoe comprising a vamp and an ankle inclosing upper portion distinctive in appearance from said vamp, the upper portion having edges adapted to be drawn toward each other to secure the shoe upon the foot of the wearer, means for holding said edges in operative relationship, a shielding tab projecting upwardly outside of said edges from a point adjacent the bottom of Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, 7
the same, and a decorative device disposed upon said tab and covering the line of jointure of the latter to the shoe proper, substantially as described.
In witness whereof, ture, in the presence of two Witnesses.
