1 ASSIGNOR TO MURPHY WAKE 'EION F 1 f i 1:. in; a B,
Epeeification of Letters Patent. Patented June 18, 1912..
Application filed April}, 1911. Serial H0. 619,776.
To all whom it my concern:
Beitknown that I, WILLIAM L. MUBPHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at San.Francisco, in the county of San Francisco. and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Disappeering Beds, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in disappearing beds, the object of the invention being to provide an apparatus used for moving the bed from one position to another which shall be simple in character and convenient in operation, and particularly in which a bed of ordinary fullwidth can be passed through an opening of muchless width and concealed by the door closing said opening.
Illythfi accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front view of the bed, in the position for use, the door being shown partly closed; Fige2 is a sectional view of the opening for the bed, showing in plan view the bed in the position for use but collapsed, and showing in dotted lines the position of the bed when not in use and also an intermediate position; Fig. 3 is a side view of the lower por tion of the head of the bed.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a wall and 2 an opening therein closed by asliding door 3, which slides in the wall at one side of the opening and abuts against a. post 4 at the other side. However, 1 herein show a sliding door as one illustration only of the manner in which the invention may be applied. Secured to said post are the fixed leaves of a vertical series of hinges 5, three being here shown, and "an angle plate 6 is riveted or otherwise secured to the loose leaves of said hinges. However, if desired, said angle plate may itself be hinged to said fixed leaves. Said angle plate is secured by countersunk bolts 7 and nuts-8 to upper and tower head boards 9, to which are secured vertical brackets 10, to the central portions of which brackets is pivotally secured the bed frame 11, said bed flame having at its toot legs 12-adapted to be folded against the bed frame when collapsed. @ther details of, construction of the bed itself are not material to the invention and are not herein shown. It will be seen that, by reason of The sliding door can be closed equall well when the bed is opened for use, or in t e position of rest when not in use.
Although the angle plate, as herein shown,
is of a length to extend the full height of the door, it is not necessary for the proper support of the bed that such should be the case, as it need only extend the height of the uppermost head board. However, the apparatus presents a better appearance when the angle plate is of such height, and, in addition, is slightly stronger.
A great advantage attendant upon my invention is that the bed and all traces thereof are entirely concealed when not in use, and, the door being of ordinary width, no suspicion is ever created that it conceals a bed of full width.
The simplicity and convenience of the construction of bed herein disclosed depend in a great measure upon the fact that the hinges have pintles that are arranged sub stantially in the middle of one side of the opening, and the leaves of said hinges can extend through said opening to opposite sides of the wall.
I claim 1. in combination with a wall having an opening, a bed, of greater width than the width of said opening, pivotally secured to said wall on one side of said opening by pivots located suficiently near the central vertical axis of the head of the bed to permit the bed to swing horizontally therethrough, substantially as described 2.. in combination with a wall having an opening, a bed, of greater width than the width of said opening, having a pivotal sup; portat one side of said opening by pivots located sufiiciently near the central vertical axis of the head of the bed to permit the bed to swing-horizontally therethrough, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a wall having an opening, a bed, and hin%es upon which said In testimony ivhereof I have hereunto set bed can swing horizonta 1y, said hin s hevmy hand in the presence of two subscribing ing pintles located substantially in t e mid- 'wltnesse's.
dle portion of an edge of said opening and WILLIAM L. MURPHY. 6 having loose leaves e 'ranged to extend a1 Witnesses: I ternatel to opposite sldes of said wall, sub- FnANoIs M. WRIGHT,
