UNITE CLARENCE W. FOSTER, OF DONORA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GRATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28,1912.
Application filed November 16, 1911. Serial No. 660,554.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLARENCE W. FOSTER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Donora, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a grate, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a tiltable grate that can be advanta geously used in connection with fire places, stoves, furnaces, and various structures cont aining a fire.
A further object of this invention is to provide a fire grate that is simple in construction, durable and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is intended.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had tothe drawing wherein Figure l is a perspective view of the fire Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional View of the grate, and Fig. 4 is a front elevation of a portion of the grate,
A grate in accordance with this invention comprises a pair of A frames 1 and trunnioned between said frames is a tiltable grate or fire tray, comprising a slotted or foraminous bottom plate 2, end walls 3 and a foraminous or apertured front wall 4 The end walls 3 have diametrically opposed trunnions or pins 5 extending into the apices of the frames 1. The trunnions 5 are located in closer proximity to the inner end of the walls 3 than the outer ends, whereby the grate will be overbalanced to rest upon inwardly projecting and oppositely disposed lugs or stops 6, carried by the frames 1 for maintaining the grate in a normally horizontal position.
The front wall 4, besides having suitably arranged openings 7 has depending prongs 8, these prongs adding to the appearance of the front of the grate and preventing coals that might fall off the inner edge of the bottom plate 2 from passing outwardly from under the grate. The prongs further assist in tilting the grate, as the grate can be tilted by gripping one of the prongs or placing a poker or other device in engagement with the prongs to raise the front of the grate. As the grate is tilted the ashes that have accumulated thereon slide from the inner edge of the bottom plate 2 and can be easily removed from around the grate structure.
A grate in accordance with this invention can be advantageously used in connection with fire engines, where the entire fire is.
to be drawn or removed from beneath the boiler of the engine after a fire is over.
The grate can be made of strong and durable metal and of various sizes.
What I claim is A fire grate comprising the combination with a pair of A frames, of a tray including a pair of imperforate end walls and an upwardly and outwardly inclined foraminous front wall integral with said end walls and a horizontally disposed foraminous bottom integral with the end walls and with the front wall at a point above the lower end of the latter, a trunnion projecting from each of said end walls in proximity to its upper inner corner and j ournaled in the apex of a frame, and inwardly extending lugs projecting from the inner faces of the front legs of said frames and capable of engaging the forward portion of said bottom for maintaining the tray in a horizontal position, that portion of the front wall which depends below said bottom and side walls slotted to provide prongs capable of being engaged to tilt the tray, said prongs further constituting means to prevent coals from passing outwardly from under the grate at the outer edge of the bottom plate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CLARENCE V. FOSTER. Witnesses:
FRANCIS L. PownLL, NORMAN C. RAY.
