Be it known thatI, OSCAR C. RixsoN, citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of NewYork,-have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Door-Closing Mechanism, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,for1ning a part of this specification.

The invention will be best understood by' referring to the annexed drawings which show a preferred embodiment thereof as ap lied to a double-actin door (though it be applied to a single-acting-door).

To the bottom edge of the door is secured the slotted plate 4, which latter engages the correspondingly-shaped upper end of shaft 3 (Fig. 4), thus locking the door and shaft 3 together so that the turning of either on its axis carries the other with it. The operating-devices are inclosed in casing 5, which is located in the sill G beneath the door-- and provided with a cover 7 that lies flush with the sill. These operating-devices are connected to shaft 3, which thus becomes the operating-shaft, transmitting movement from the door to the mechanism and vice versa. This shaft 3 is located near one end of casin 5, its lower end turning on the ball-bearing 10 (Fig. 3), while its upper bearing is in the collar 8 which is threaded into the top wall of the casing. In the present instance the,` operating-shaft 3 extends upward from casing 5 which is located beneatli the door; but the casing might be inverted and located in the upper lintel, above the door.
)Vithin the casing and adjacent the shaft 3 are the two horizontally-extending cylinders 34 and 35, of the liquid checking mechanisin or check, with their pistons 36 and 37; and beyond them the vertically-arranged helical spring 11 and the oppositely-wound helical spring 12 (Figs. 5 and 2).

the disk or fixed anchor 32,- to which the lower end of the spring is made fast. Upon this same shaft 22 is mounted a freelytiirning sleeve carrying at its upper end the disk l or movable anchor 14, to which is secured' the upper end of spring. From each one of these upper anchor plates 14 there extends to the operating shaft 3 an independent connection, comprising preferably a plurality of links whose remotest member (13 and 19 respectively) is comparatively short aiid is pivoted to crank-ears 17-17 upon shaft 3. Axial turningl of shaft 3 in one direction winds up one spring, and turning of the shaft in the other direction winds up the other spring. Depending from the cover 7 is a lug or stop 142 adjacent the rear of the first link 15 of one spring (Figs. 2 and 3) while a similar stop 143 is provided for the first link 20 of t-he other spring.
Preferably the sides and rear of shaft 3, at the level of Short links 13--19 (as seen in Figs. 2, 8 and 11), provide a camfsurface that affords maximum leverage for the tension or pull of each of the two springs when the door is closed (Fig. 2), while the stops 142 and 143 limit the extent of pull' of each spring; whereas, in the opened position of the door (Fig. 8,) the minimum levcr age is afforded the tension or pull of the then-operating (lefthand) spring 11, while the collapsing or folding of the links 1t) and 21 and the presence of stop 143 render the other (right-hand) spring 12 inactive. But such cam-surface of the shaft 3 may be dispensed with, and the outer links (13 and 19) connected to shaft 3 at one side of the dead center, in which case the ordinary effect of the rotation of shaft 3, in moving the pivot of link 13 (or 19) throughthe quadrant, may be relied on for lessenlng the leverage of the springs.
lIn the normal closed position each spring tends to draw its links toward it (to the right in Fig. 2), while the shoulders 142v and 148 prevent either spring from preponderating over thev other and forcing thevdoor past its normalclosed position. In practice, particularly in case of entrance doors for tall buildings, the spring that resists the opening of the door inward (as by gusts of wind)-will preferably have the greater tension or pull,-that is, will be much stiffer than the other spring; and the function of the stops is to prevent the stiHer spring forcing the door outward beyond the normal closed position.
When a person undertakes to push against the door to open it, at the outset lie has to l overcome the greater leverage and maximum resistance offered by the properI spring; but
as the door is swung wider and wider open, the leverage of the spring diminishes. In
