B. P. PIOKETT.
Oar Roof. No. 102,316. Patented April 26,1870.

BENJAMIN F. PIOKETT, OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
Letters Patent No. 102,316, dated April 26, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAILWAY CAR-ROOF.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters.Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. PICKETT, ofN ashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car- Roofing and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in which- 1 Figure 2 is a plan view showing a portion of the lath and reflexed edges of the roofing-sheets, a part of the fastening-plate, and the inclosing-cap; and
Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section showing. all the parts.
This invention consists in the combination of a lath or strip forming a ridge attached lengthwise of and directly to the boards of a car or other roof, with metal sheets spread on the wooden roof, and having their edges next the ridge turned over, a metal plate fastened both to the ridge and the reflexed edges of the sheets, and a cap placed over the metal plate and having its edges turned under the refiexed edges of the sheets.
In the drawings A is the'wooden car-roof.
B, a wooden ridge on the same. i
O O, the sheets of metal'which cover the roof, the
edges of which, adjacent to the-ridge, are turned-over.- I
D, the fastening-plate, secured firmly at its middle to the ridge B, and riveted at its edges to the reflexed edges of the sheets 0; and
' E, a cap, screwed through the fastening-plate to the ridge, and at its edges turned under the reflexed edges of the sheets 0. c g
, The plateD fastens tho sheets 0 to the roof in such a manner thatthey may expand orcontract according to the variationsof temperature, and may yield before the swayingandoscillation of the car.
The cap E preventsjm oisture from working in between the sheets and fastening-plate, and at the same time in no manner restricts the expansion and con traction of the sheets.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a wooden roofing, of the ridge B, sheets 0, fastening-plate D, and cap E, constructed and arranged in the manner and for the purpose described.
BENJAMIN F. PIOKETT.
