To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUY B. DE LONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Weston, in the county of food, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to car looks for receiving bow facing oars.
The object of this invention is to provide a simpler and easier working oar lock than hitherto constructed, and to attain this end, novel oar engaging members are employed, each member receiving an oar without the use of bolts or similar connectors so that the oar is not weakened.
The invention resides in the oar receiving members, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification: Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a boat equipped with my improved car look. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the oar lock. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the car lock and pin. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 4t, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the oar receiving members. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the pivotal mounting of the car lock pivot pin.
Referring now to the drawings, the reference character 10 designates the gunwales of a boat to which an oar lock socket (not shown) is fixed.
The oar lock comprising the subject matter of this invention consists of a pair of oar receiving members 11, each member comprising a tapered socket 12, having at its smaller end a transversely disposed tubular head 13, from one side of which projects forwardly a plate like segment 1 1 having formed on its arcuat'e edge gear teeth 15. Fitted in the socket of one of the oar receiving members is the reduced tapered extremity 16' of the blade portion 17 of the oar, and fitted in the socket of the mating oar receiving member is the reduced tapered extremity 18 of the grip portion 19 of the oar. The tapered extremities of the blade and grip portions of the oar are driven snugly into the sockets of the oar receiving members so that bolts or similar connectors are not necessary in firmly securing the sections of the car in position, consequently, the car is not weakened when mounted in the oar receiving members. Formed in the flat end faces of the tubular head 13 are circular ball races 20, these ball races surrounding and having one side communicating with the bore of the head as shown in Fig. 4. Fitted in the ball races are ball bearings 21.
Forconnecting the oar receiving members whereby to hold their gear teeth in mesh, a link 22 is provided, this link being of greater width than the cross diameter of the tubular heads of the oar receiving members and having its opposite ends rounded as shown at 23 and projecting slightly beyond the peripheries of said head. Arranged at each end of the link and disposed concentrically with the curved end edge thereof is a cylindrical post 24, this post being of suflicient cross diameter to snugly fit in the bore of the tubular head 13 of the adjacent oar receiving member and being of suflicient length to terminate flush with the top face of the head when the link is in abutting contact with the bottom face of the head. This post bears with its periphery against the peripheries of the ball bearings 21, as does also the top face of the link, whereby the rotation of the head upon the post is promoted. Each post is provided in its free end face with a threaded opening 25.
A link 26 is provided with curved end edges 27 and with bolt openings 28 concentric with these curved end edges and adapted to register withthe threaded openings 25 of the posts. This link is of approximately the same width as the cross diameter of the heads 13. Screws 29 are inserted through the openings in the link and advanced into the threaded openings of the post, and when in this position retain the link in abutting contact with the ball bearings in the top faces of the heads.
Depending from the bottom face of the link 22 is a pair of spaced ears 30 between the opposed inner faces of which is swiveled the eye 31 of an eye pin 32, this eye pin being adapted to fit in the oar lock socket on the gunwale of a boat and having a circular abutment flange 33 which engages the top face of said socket.
For permitting of the oar receiving members being locked together so that the car can be used as an ordinary oar, registering openings 34; are formed in the segment plate of one of the car receiving members and on the top and bottom links, these registering openings receiving a locking bolt 35 which when inserted therein locks the links and oar receiving members in rigid position.
What is claimed is A11 oar lock including a pair of oar receiving members, each comprising a tapered socket member designed to snugly fit without mutilating the tapered extremity of an oar end portion, said socket having at one end a transversely disposed tubular head, and having a toothed skeleton segment projecting from said head in axial alinement with said socket, a pair of links having their opposite ends bearing against the flat end faces of said heads, one of said links having a pair of posts adjacent its ends engaged through the bores of said heads, said posts having relatively short threaded sockets in their outer ends, and the other of said links bearing upon the outer ends of said posts, screws carried by said last named links engaged in said sockets and removably securing the link to said posts, both of said links and the skeleton segment of one of said oar receiving members being provided with registering openings, a locking bolt removably engaged in said registering openings locking the links and said oar receiving members in rigid position, and a pivot pin depending from the bottom face of one of said links.
