CLARENCE G. WELSZ, OF PALMYRA, MISSOURI.
PORTABLE FENCE-POST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application field December 14. 1910.
Patented Nov. 7, 1911. Serial No. 597,256.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE G. VVELSZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Palmyra, in the county of Marion and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fence- Posts, of which the following is a specifica tion, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to portable fence posts and more particularly to that class which are provided with a separable base, which consists of molded blocks of artificial stone having a groove therein for the reception of a post that may be used for supporting fence wires, telephone wires, etc.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, hereinafter described, pointed out in the claim, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved fence post; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the auxiliary section thereof.
In constructing the improved fence post it will be seen in the drawings that the abutress is composed of two sections 1 and 2, which are suitably shaped blocks made of artificial stone. The block 1 is provided with a sloping surface 3 on its inner side and in its outer side a longitudinal groove 4: is formed and extends to within a suitable distance from the base thereof. A fence post 5 is secured therein by means of the bolt 6 passing through the block and post near the top end of the block. The post 5 is to extend a little beyond the outer surface of the block 1 as shown at 5 so that the fence wire may be secured thereto. The base of the post is held securely within the groove 3 by means of a dowel pin 7 having one end set in the base block 1 at the lower end of the longitudinal groove 3, and an opening 8 in the base of the post 4 is adapted to receive the other end of said dowel pin. An inclined surface 9 is formed at the lower end of the groove 3, for the purpose of affording means of escape for water which might get into the groove, and thus protect the post against decay from dampness, if the post he made of wood or other material which would become decayed from dampness. The blocks 1 and 2 are to be formed with a concave bottom 10 so that if the ground be uneven where the post is to be stationed it will allow the blocks to set firmly upon the ground and prevent any rocking movement thereof.
When the post is to be used in fencing in cattle or other stock the wire is to be secured to the post 5 by staples or other suitable means, and when stock is to be placed on both sides of the fence the auxiliary block 2 is bolted on to the main block 1 by means of the bolt 6 passing through the post and both blocks near the top ends thereof. A longitudinal groove 11 is formed on the inner side of the block 2 adapted to receive the extending edge 5 of the post 5, and the lower edge of the fence wire or wires are to be placed between said blocks and when they are bolted together the wire will be held securely therein. This auxiliary block 2 is to be formed on its inner side with an inclined surface 12 the same as the main block 1.
In setting up a fence the blocks 1 are to be placed on the ground a suitable distance apart and then the posts 5 are to be secured therein and the wire or wires are to be stapled or otherwise secured to the posts. It will be seen that a fence constructed with my improved post will be extremely simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture, and will be the means of saving a good deal of time and labor.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention I do not want to limit myself to its exact construction, but desire to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof.
It will be noted that various changes in the details of construction and in the pro-' portions may be resorted to for successfully carrying the invention into practice without sacrificing any of the features or departing from the scope thereof.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is The herein described portable fence post comprising the post member having up1 wardly converging sides, the base comprlsing a main section and an auxiliary section having mutually contacting inner side walls and respectively provided in their opposing sides with recesses shaped to receive the lower end of the post member, the recess of the main section being deeper and broader than that of the auxiliary section and having a bottom inclined downwardly from the auxiliary section, a securing pin fitted partly In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my in that portion of the main section forming signature in the presence of two Witnesses. the bottom of said recess and partly in the post member, and a bolt extending trans- CLARENCE WELSZ' versely through the sections of the base and Vitnesses:
also through the post member and binding CLARENCE M. SHORES,
them together. Mrs. CLARENCE SHORES.
