UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS CUNNINGHAM, 0F NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT.
DETACI-IABLE WATCH-POCKET.
To all whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that I, LOUIS CUNNINGHAM,
'a citizen of the United States, residing at New London, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented ce1'- tain new and useful Improvements in Detachable latch-Pockets, of which the following is a specification.
The chief object of this invention is to provide a cheap, convenient and effective form of supplemental watch pocket, that may be readily attached to or removed from watch pockets as ordinarily provided in vests and trousers and, in carrying my said invention into eii'ect, I have made special provision for securing t-he supplemental pocket to the vest, or trousers, as the case may be, and for preventing the accumulation of dust in said supplemental pocket.
In order to explain my said invention clearly I have provided the annexed sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a vest having a supplemental pocket of my improved form attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a relatively enlarged, perspective, view of said supplemental pocket and Fig. 3 is a further enlarffed, vertical, sectional, view of said pocllet, showing a watch therein. Fig. 4 is a detached, perspective, view of a spring which serves to clamp the supplemental pocket to the garment and also to close the said supplemental pocket.
Referring to these drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a pocket formed preferably of leather and extended at the top to provide flaps 1112, the former of which is adapted to be buttoned, or otherwise fastened, to a garment while the latter named flap (12) is folded downwardly and is reinforced by a spring 13 in such manner that, when the supplemental pocket is entered in the ordinary pocket of a vest the said reinforced flap will slip over the outer wall of the vest pocket and will clasp the said outer wall with sufficient force to prevent the accidental displacement of the supplemental pocket.
The spring is formed of spring wire, having a portion thereof secured to said downturned flap, and having two terminals 15, 15, which are projected downward along the side marginal edges of the pocket-body, as shown in the drawing, said terminals having lateral, right-angularly-bent, inturned Specification of Letters Patent.

hooks 16, 16 engaging the side marginal edges of said pocket-body.
The bottom of the supplemental pocket is closed only at its middle portion, as seen in Fig. 2 of the drawings, thus providing openings 14 through which dirt or dust may escape into the vest pocket instead of remaining in the supplemental pocket, in abrading contact with the watch and, in order to further prevent the retention of dust in the supplemental pocket, I make the same of leather having a smooth inner face and a pebbled, or otherwise roughened, outer face; the smooth inner face permitting the dust to pass readily downward, by gravity to, and through, the openings 14 While the roughened outer face provides an increased degree of friction to prevent the supplemental pocket from slipping out of the vest pocket.
lfVhen it is desired to use a pocket of my described construction it is first slipped inside of the ordinary vest pocket, or trousers pockets, as the case may be, the spring Hap 12 inclosing and clasping the outer wall of the garment pocket and the back Hap 11 being preferably buttoned to the garment, as illustrated. The spring 13 then operates both to clamp the supplemental pocket to the garment and to close the entrance to the pocket. Then the watch is inserted in the pocket it forces the spring 13 and flap 12 forward until the watch has passed below the influence of the spring, when the latter seeks to again close said opening (see Fig. 3) and thus provides a bar to the ready removal of the watch.
By preference I connect the chain or fob with the watch by means of a link 15 of leather, orother insulating material, so that the watch is insulated from all metal connection and is thus less liable to become electrified or magnetized.
My described device protects the watch from dirt and also is a guard against pickpockets, as well as against electrical or magnetic influences.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent A supplemental watch-pocket, including a pocket-body, a flap bent downward fromthe top of said body, and a spring for frictionally holding said watch-pocket in the pocket of a garment and for automatically closing the mouth of said supplemental Watchpoclret, said spring being formed of a strip of spring Wire, having a portion thereof operatively secured to said Hap, and having two terminals proj eeted downward along the side marginal edges of said pocket-body, said terminals 4having lateral7 right-anside marginal edges of said pocket-body.
