COMBINATION-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led May 27, 1911.
Patented Sept. 5, 1911. serial No. 629,944.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTEO TAMBURINI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination- Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combination locks and it consists in certain improvements in a combination lock constituting the subject of Letters Patent of the United States, No. 981,140, granted to me January 10th, 1911.
One object of the invention is to construct the patented combination mechanism so that it may be. used in a practical way to operate not only a bolt but a latch, as well.
A further object of the invention is so to construct the parts of the mechanism which directly include the index disks or dials that the same may be concealed except when in use.
A still further object is so to construct the parts of the'mechanism so as to render it more compact and durable, and facilitate its operation by those familiar wit-h the combination.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows the improved mechanism in front elevation as mounted in a door; Fig.2 shows the lock proper and a part of the operating spindle in perspective, the front plate of the lock being removed; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view in the longitudinal plane of `the axis of the spindle and through that part of the mechanism which includes the index disks or dials; and, Fig. L is a sectional view on the line m-m of Fig. 3.
In the door a is arranged a lock-casing Z; of usual construction, the cover not appearing in the drawings. Suit-ably guided to slide in the lock-casing are a bolt c and a latch al, c being a spring holding the bolt at any position to which it is moved and f a spring normally holding the latch at its outward limit of movement. The bolt has a plurality of notches g in its under side, while t-he latch has a notch 71, in one face thereof.
z' is an auxiliary bolt sliding in the lockcasing b and adapted to be cont-rolled by a removable key The door a has the escutcheons Z0 and Z bearing against opposite faces thereof, the escutcheon 7c having an outwardly projecting boss m. Fitting this boss is a cylindrical shell fa which has an exterior annular shoulder 0 at its outer end and at its inner end is formed with the threaded projecting stems p which penetrate the escutcheon 7c, the door a, the lock-casing b, and the escutcheon Z and carry at their free ends the nuts g which, when screwed up tight, clamp the shell and the escutcheons securely to the door. In the outer end of the shell n is fixed a head r.
The door a, lock-casing b and shell n, with its head r, afford supporting means for the bolts, latch and springs already named, together with other moving parts, now to be described.
Journaled in the escutcheon Z and the head w is a spindle s carrying at its opposite ends the knobs t fixed thereto, the space between the left hand knob in Fig. 1 and the escutcheon Z representing the distance which this spindle is longitudinally movable.
The spindle is provided with the wards u and fu, said wards being respectively adapted to engage the notched portions of the bolt and latch c and CZ to move the same. The parts to be actuated (2'. c., the bolt and latch) being in the same vertical plane, but the two wards u and 'u being in different planes crossing the axis of the spindle, it follows that when one of the wards, say u, is operatively engaged with the bolt or latch member, say c, the other ward may rotate without engaging and operating the other member, and vice versa.
Arranged side by side in the shell a between the boss m and head r are the rotary index disks or dials w the same and the head 1" having indices on their outer peripheries, being penetrated by the spindle s and each having two internal circumferential grooves g/ connected by a longitudinal groove a. As in my patent referred to, coacting with these grooves in the dials are studs 2 on the spindle. When the spindle is in its right-hand position in Fig. 1 its ward u is in position to operate the bolt c; when it is in the left-hand position its ward v is in position to operate the latch cZ. In the latter position the spindle is in such position that, so far as the ward u and bolt c are concerned, it may be moved longitudinally; it then remains only to move the dials 'w so that their indices will form the necessary combination with the index on the head r to bring 'their grooves z in alinement With the studs 2.
It Will be observed that the shell n is provided with two sight-openings 4. Each of these exposes one, two or more indices on each of the parts r and w. Normally to conceal the indices the shell a carries a sleeve 5 having apertures 6 corresponding to the openings 4 in the shell. When the sleeve 5 is in the position shown in Fig. 4 the indices are exposed. The sleeve 5 is embraced between the escutcheon 7c and shoulder 0.
In order 'that the escutcheon la may be removed from the shell and spindle after removing the combination .mechanism from the door the -escutcheon 7c is .provided With the vertical -slot 7 through Which the Wards a and o of the spindle may pass.
Y Usually, spindle s Willstand at the left -in Fig. l (right-hand knob t engaging head r) and be held normally by the springactuated latch so that Ward v projects downwardly; the disks fw may at that time prevent movement of the spindle to the right by being turned so that their grooves .e do not register With the studs 2. The spindle is in this position used to operate the latch.
Upon settingv the disks so as to allow-movement of the spindle to the right it may be brought to such a position :that Ward lv clears the latch and Ward fa engages the bolt, whereupon the latter vmay be shot by turningV the spindle. Upon now returning the spindle to its original or left-hand position in Fig. l and again disturbing the combination the bolt will be eHectually cut 0E from the influence of the spindle.
In order to hold the disks 'wagainst accidental displacementafter adjustment, as by rotation of the spindle, I provide a curved detent 8 (Fig. 4) Which is pivoted in the opening 4 of the shell and may rest flat against the peripheries ofthe disks, its toe 9 engaging notches l0 in the disks and the detent being `held in that position by turning the sleeve to cover it; by turning the sleeve to uncover the detent the latter may swingvout on its pivot (dotted lines, Fig. 4) to release the disks.
Having .thus .fully described my invention, what Iclaim as nevvpand desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
l. The combination, Witha suitable supporting means, ofva rotary controlling member journaled and having limited .movement therein longitudinally of its yaxis and also having radial Wards, a latch `and a bolt each movable longitudinally in said supporting means and crossing said member, one Ward being engageable With the bolt When said member is in one of its limits of longitudinal movement and the other Ward being engageable With the latch When said member is at its other limit of longitudinal movement and means, comprising an in- Looaes dexed rotary part journaled in the supporting means concentric With said member, for holding the latter at either of its limits of longitudinal movement, substantially as described.
2. The co1nbination,.with a suitable supporting means, of a rotary controlling member journaled and having limited movement therein longitudinally of its axis and also having radial Wards, a longitudinally movable spring-actuated latch crossing said member and normally standing in a definite position relatively thereto, said latch having a notch for engagement With one of the Wards of said member, a longitudinally movable bolt also crossing said member and notched for the engagement therewith of the other Ward of said member, one Ward being engageable With the bolt When said member is in one of the limits, and the other Ward being engageable with the latch when said member is in the other of the limits, to Which said member is longitudinally movable, and means comprising an indexed rotary part journaled in the supporting means concentric With said member, for Iholding the latter at either of its limits of longitudinal movement, substantially as described.
3. The combination, With a suitable supporting means, of a fpart to be actuated movable therein, a rotary controlling member journaled and having limited movement longitudinally of its axis in said supporting means, said member being operatively engageable at one of its limits of longitudinal movement with, and disengaged `at `the other of its limits of longitudinal movement from, the part to be actuated, a rotary indexed part journaled concentric vvith said member, said indexed part and said member having coacting means for holding the latter at either of its limits of longitudinal movement, and a detent movable -in the supporting means into and out of holding relation to the indexed part, substantially as described.
4. The combination, With a suitable supporting means, of a part to be actuated movable therein, a rotary controlling member j ournaled and having limited movement longitudinally of its axis in said supporting means, said member being operatively engageable at one of its limits of longitudinal movement with, and disengaged at the other of its limits of longitudinal movement from, the part to be actuated, a rotary indexed part journaled concentric with said member, said indexed part and said member having coacting means for holding the latter at either of its limits of longitudinal movement, said supporting means comprising an apertured shell, a detent pivoted in the aperture of said shell and engageable With the indexed part to secure the same against rotation, and an inclosing member revoluble on the shell over its aperture and adapted to hold the detent engaged with the indexed part, substantially as described.
5. The combination, With the door and lock-casing arranged therein, of a cylindrical shell having stems extending from one end thereof and a head in and an annular shoulder around its other end, said stems penetrating the door and holding the shell thereto, a revoluble indexed part arranged conoentrically in the shell, a rotary controlling member journaled and having limited longitudinal movement in the head and the door, penetrating said indexed part and lock-casing and having a radially projecting Ward Within the lock-casing, a movable part to be actuated by the Ward of said member upon rotating said member When the latter is at one of its limits of movements, said part to be actuated being arranged in the loclocasing and said indexed part and said member having coaoting means for holding the latter at either of its limits of longitudinal movement and the shell having an opening exposing the indices of said indexed part, and a sleeve revolubly arranged on the shell between the door and the shoulder and having an opening adapted to coincide With the opening in the shell, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of tvvo Witnesses.
