Abstract

Subtitles or other supplemental visual displays (8) are added to a motion picture by separately projecting (2, 6) the supplemental display onto the motion picture display. The projections of the motion picture and supplemental display are synchronized with each other, such as by the use of a film (88) time code (98), so that the correct supplemental display is projected at the right time. The supplemental display is preferably stored in a digital format, and can be integrated with an audio store (12) used to play back the film's sound track. Storage formats that can be used include a variable size data frame (114, 116, 118) in which the length of each particular frame matches the number of character spaces required by the display, and a constant data frame size (146, 148, 150) large enough to accommodate the largest display. With variable data frame sizes the storage medium is preferably prescanned (128) to establish a file (130) that correlates the locations of the individual data frames with the corresponding film time code units or other synchronizing data. The film itself remains unaltered, and many different sets of subtitles or other supplemental visual displays can be used with the same film print.

V. Description of the invention (1) The invention is based on the present invention. Explain that there are three conventional techniques for superimposing subtitles on movies. In the first type, a non-captioned film print film is coated with a wax protective layer on all film image areas, except for the area that defines the desired caption text. Then, the unprinted caption text area is treated with an acid to remove the print emulsion. In addition, the wax coating of the rest of the prints is subsequently removed. 0 During the screening, the acid-treated area appears as subtitle text. 0 Although the quality of the subtitles generated by this method is generally acceptable, once the subtitles are created, they cannot be removed. As such, different subtitle languages require separate prints and a subtitle print. Alternative methods of wax / acid technology include removing the emulsion from the text area with a laser beam to form cosmic text. This procedure generally produces a higher text resolution, but different subtitle languages still require separate prints. The third technique is to include the subtitles in the original film exposure, making them part of the overall film image. This usually takes time, and different subtitle languages also require a brand-new print. Summary of the invention The present invention allows a single film print to change the subtitles or not to use it at all, which greatly improves Reduce the cost and inventory required for most prints. The present invention provides this capability without the need to make any physical changes to the film print itself, so the danger of damaging the film by the subtitle processing program is avoided. Description of the invention (2) The present invention includes Movie theaters use auxiliary projectors, or any other auxiliary visual display required, to display subtitles to the main projector's projector that plays the film Shadow image. The subtitles are displayed in synchronization with the movie, so that the correct subtitles (or other supplementary visual displays) are superimposed on the movie at the correct time. The subtitles can be provided in a variety of ways, such as being stored on discs or other digital storage media, or electronically. Or show it instantly. A preferred technique for synchronizing the subtitle projection from the storage media with the film projection from the main projector is to provide a time code on the film, which marks a specific part of the currently displayed film, and attaches the subtitles of the storage media to it, etc. Corresponding time code unit 〇 When the film is shown, read the time code from the film and use it to access the corresponding subtitles for overlapping projection on the film display. 0 The data frame of the storage medium can have equal length, regardless of any special The number of text spaces required for subtitles, or the length of the frame can be trimmed to the number of text spaces required for each individual subtitle. 0 When the subtitle box is an integer length of the time code box, the equal length box allows very fast access to the storage medium Any required boxes, because all box positions are known. For example, the subtitle frame can be 6 time code frames long, allowing subtitles to have a time resolution of 1/4 second, but compared with the full subtitles repeated for each time code frame, the data space required for subtitles is reduced by 6 times. This processing method is particularly useful when the data storage frame also includes its own movie audio track portion. The unequal frame length allows more efficient use of media storage capacity, but also takes longer to access; the required frame can be quickly Reached forward through the media, instead of making a single jump when the box is of equal length. However, by first applying the Chinese standard (CNS) A4 (210 X 297 mm) to this paper size------- ------- Installation -------- Order ---- ί-* line (please read the precautions on the back first and then this page) Printed by the Consumer Cooperative of the Intellectual Property Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs 739 7 A7 _B7___ V. Description of the invention (3) Scan the storage medium to establish a file in the medium itself or in the computer to control the access to the medium, so that the time code unit is associated with the corresponding data frame position in the storage medium. Fetching can be significantly accelerated. Then use this file to jump very quickly to the appropriate position in the storage medium corresponding to the current time code input. Subtitled auxiliary projectors or other supplementary visual displays can be implemented in many ways, including liquid crystal light valves (LCLV) and video, slide and film projectors . For smaller screens, video projectors are more satisfying, and for larger screens, LCLV is better. These and other features and advantages of the present invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from the following detailed description in conjunction with the accompanying drawings. Description of the invention (4) have The flowchart of the storage media access procedure of the data frame is illustrated in Figure w, which includes forming a file to associate the time code with the frame position; and Figures 12 and 13 are the supplementary visual display itself and the supplementary visual display and movie sound track, respectively. An illustration of a combination of equal-length data storage frames. 0 Detailed description of the invention. Figure 1 illustrates one of the main applications of the invention: displaying subtitles on a movie display. 0-the main projector 2 projects a movie on a display surface. For example, a movie screen used. The subtitles are projected by an auxiliary projector 6 onto a desired area 8 on the movie screen called subtitles. The subtitle information is provided by the controller 10 to an auxiliary projector, which preferably stores the subtitles in a storage medium 12 in a digital format. In response to the SYNC signal on line I4 of the projector, the controller 10 provides any currently required subtitles to the auxiliary projector 6 for projection onto the screen 4. The SYNC signal synchronizes the main and auxiliary projectors so that the appropriate subtitles are superimposed on the movie display at the correct time. Since the subtitles are generated separately from the film prints, a subtitleless print can be shown from the main projector 2 and Any desired subtitles are added via the auxiliary projector 6. To change the subtitles of the same print, simply replace the storage medium 12 with a new storage medium with a different subtitle group. In this way, any number of different subtitle groups can be used for the same film print, or there are no subtitles, without the need to modify the print or provide different prints for different subtitle groups. Figure 2 is a block diagram of the present invention in a more general way. Supplementary visual displays other than subtitles, such as special effects or advertisements, can also be superimposed on the film display. Description of Invention (5). The controller 10 may be located either at a position mainly with the auxiliary projector, or at a remote location. The storage medium 12 for auxiliary visual display may be a conventional mechanism, such as a compact disc (CD) or a digital video tape. Using this storage medium, the controller 10 functions as the same computer, which accesses the medium in response to the SYNC signal on the input SYNC line 14 and provides synchronized supplementary display information on the output display information line 16 to the auxiliary projector input SYNC line 14 and the output information line 16 can be hardware circuits as shown, or implemented in other ways such as electronic transmission systems or KF or optical transmission channels. The SYNC signal on the input SYNC line 16 can have different formats. It depends on how the system is set up. Many film development films provide a time code distributed along the length of the film. Each time the code bit is composed of a failed data string, which uniquely indicates the position along the film. 0 The current available time The code includes a 24-bit digital word in the DTS (Digital Cinema System Corporation) format, each word starting with a synchronous sequence of bits, and the SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) standard. If the film being projected has a time code, the time code is read at the main projection position and provided as an input SYNC signal to the controller 100. The storage medium 12 corresponding to each time code position requiring subtitles will include a data segment, Each data frame includes the corresponding time code and subtitle (or other visual display) information. When a specific time code unit is input to the controller as a SYNC signal, the corresponding memory storage frame is accessed, and its The subtitle information is transmitted to the auxiliary projector 6 for superimposed display on the movie. Storage media 1 2 may include a frame for all time code units, which is a blank frame for time code units that do not require subtitles, or may include only a frame of time code units with corresponding subtitles. However, this is not as good as the time code * because After film distribution, it is often the habit of editing soft prints. If some of the film prints are cut and removed, if you remove the damaged parts in the prints or reduce the length of the movie, the remaining time code units will remain synchronized with the subtitle information. On the other hand, Using the rotation speed timer, after setting up a subtitle storage medium for the complete film length, when encountering the first editing place, removing a part of the film will cause a loss of synchronization, and gradually increase the loss of synchronization for each subsequent clip. The SYNC input can also be provided by another computer's serial data, as shown in the controller configuration. In this case, the SYNC signal can be generated at a remote location, instead of being directly obtained from the projected film. The controller 10 will normally include a SYNC input card 18, whose SYNC input signal is converted into a computer-recognizable format, allowing it to The corresponding frame for accessing the storage medium 12 and an output card 20 convert the subtitles or other supplementary visual display information read from the storage medium into a format suitable for driving the auxiliary projector 6. Description of the invention (8) The film itself separates the audio track of the movie on the digital media. The digital audio track of Figure 3 is encoded on CD 1 2 'and is organized into an information box, each of which includes audio A part of the track and a time code unit, the latter indicates where the audio frame is expected on the film. The CD 12 'is played on a CD player 101, which receives the time code (TC) signal from the film during its projection, and outputs a digital audio signal for synchronous playback during the theater film projection. The system assumption illustrated in FIG. 3 The data frame of a CD that includes audio data also includes digital data. The latter constitutes any subtitles or other supplementary visual displays to be shown at the same time. If the disc includes only audio data, the subtitle data can be placed together with the corresponding time code information. On the disc, it is synchronized with the audio disc. 0 The subtitle data is output from the CD player via port 22. It is best to use a serial card that is already on most computers. It provides digital communication with another computer or other receivable sequences. Communication of data digital devices. Serial subtitle data is transmitted on line 24 to the input communication port 26 of another computer 28. Serial data is converted into a video signal by a conventional video card 30 and transmitted to the video projector via video line 32. 34. Show the subtitles on the screen. LCLV 42 is used as an auxiliary projector in the illustrated system, and an LCLV control card 44 is read from the CD in the computer. The subtitle data is converted into the LCLV control format. The LCLV image is projected through the anamorphic lens 46, which reduces the height of the image to the subtitle area required by the screen, thus increasing the brightness of the subtitle. Figure 6 illustrates the LCLV 42 processing method. The pixel matrix used to form the subtitle text is stored in KGB (red / green / blue) data RAM 48. The horizontal and vertical SYNC signals are provided by input lines 50 and 52, and the same clock signal is provided on clock line 154, which is provided to LCLV and Both the RGB data RAM. This can be a CD ROM, driven by a suitable drive, such as the CD ROM drive of Toshiba MX3300, via the SCSI master switch Device. Other types of digital data storage can also be used, such as hard disk drives, magneto-optical drives (laser read / write systems with performance similar to conventional hard disk drives), or even a relatively slow access device such as a digital audio tape (DAT ) 〇 The main requirements of this specific form of digital data storage are (1) the access time must be less than the travel time of the film from the time code reading head 60 to the main projector 64, so as to ensure that the corresponding part of the film arrives Before the projector, a jump to non-continuous time code can be performed in the data storage, and (2) the average data rate capacity of the data storage must be faster than the average data rate of the information read by FI F0 memory (as described below) 〇 The data transfer controller 66 writes the audio data read from the data storage 68 into an audio FIFO memory 70, and the subtitles read from the data storage 68 into a subtitle FIFO memory 72; the two FIP0 are preferably at Microprocessors are implemented in conventional RAM memory. The typical application of FI F0 memory is to receive burst input data, but read the data at a fixed rate. During the period of no data reception, the data stored in the memory is gradually read out through its output, and each data bit The group gradually decreased with continuous memory cells (indicated by line 74). In this way, the memory uses the national standard (CNS) A4 specification (210 X 297 mm) according to this paper size. -13- LI 1 1 ----------------------- -^ * 1 .-- L --- (Please read the notes on the back before ik this page) Printed by the Consumer Cooperatives of the Intellectual Property Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs A7 4 5 739 7 B7____ 5. Description of the invention (1 〇 its bottom & amp Empty the card, and when the reading is in progress, the upper memory cell becomes blank. The next data burst is filled in the memory, and the data is continuously read from the bottom at the same rate. Information from the top of the " vBottom " flow through the memory, indicated by arrow 76. The minimum capacity required for FIFO memory 70 and 72 is equal to the maximum data access time of data storage 68; the maximum effective FIFO memory capacity for any particular read rate This is the film travel time equivalent to the aperture from the time code reader 60 to the main projector 62. Any additional FIFO memory capacity will not be used. Data is read from the bottom of the audio and subtitle FIFO memories 70 and 72 by one. The controller 78 reads it out and transfers the data at a fixed rate. To operate the system When the first frame reaches the aperture of the projector 64, the data transfer controller 66 simply activates the FIFO memory read controller 78 through a control line 80. The cinema projector power comes from the AC main line 81, and from the FIFO memory 7 The data read from 0 and 7 2 is locked to the AC mains signal. This allows the time code signal to be used to simply ensure that the appropriate audio and subtitle data is supplied to the FIFO memory 70 and 72 inputs without the need for audio Forward synchronization with subtitle playback and film projection. By synchronizing the reading of data from the FIFO memory with the AC mains, the latter also operates the synchronization motor used by the projector to ensure the synchronization of digital audio and subtitle signal reading and film projection. The digital audio signal read from the audio FI F0 memory 70 is transmitted by the reading controller 78 to a digital analog converter (DAC) for various theater speakers, illustrated as DAC1-4 of a four-speaker theater; a single DAC with multiple outputs It can also be used. The signal is decoded in a common form, and the paper is sized by the amplifiers A 1 -A4 " China National Standard (CNS) A4 Specifications ^ (210 X 297 mm) -14- L-- -: --------- install --- (please read the precautions on the back and then the 1CX page) --- Order · -Printed by the Consumers' Cooperative of the Intellectual Property Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs 5 4 739 7 a? __B7__ V. Description of the invention (! 2) Expanded for theater speakers S1-S4 playback. The subtitle signal read from the subtitle FIFO memory 72 is transmitted by the reading controller 78 to the supplementary projector 8 2. The subtitle data is stored and read to the auxiliary projector. The special format will depend on the type of projector. 0 Some possible variations of this system are indicated by dashed lines. Instead of supplying the input synchronization signal directly from the time code reading head 60, the synchronization signal can be provided by the sequence data 84, which may control the on-site digital data storage 68 from a remote location that also controls the film projection; the audio and subtitle data can be transmitted via An electronic delivery service 86 is provided. In addition, the audio information can be completely eliminated, and the system is only used to synchronize the film with the subtitles. Figure 8 shows a 35mm film film 88 with digital time code in DTS format. The series of pinholes are located on the film. Between the edge 92 and the normal optical sound track area 94. Each picture frame is printed on a region 98 by a picture print head, which is spaced inward from the acoustic track region 94. FIG. 9 illustrates the manner in which the print film 88 is read during a theater show. Assume that the film moves through the projector in the direction of arrow 100. It first passes through the digital time code reading head in the housing 102, which reads the time code with a colored light 104, which is illuminated on the opposite side of the film. Detector 1 06 is on, and then the film advances to projection lamp 1 8. The light frame 110 from the lamp 108 projects the picture frame onto the cinema screen 112. Each picture frame is illuminated by the projection lamp 108 a predetermined time after the respective time code units are read, which is determined by the interval between the time code lamp housing 102 and the projector 108 and the film speed. This allowable time is used to process the time code signal, check its validity, and access the appropriate digital audio and subtitle data. Intellectual Property of the Ministry of Economic Affairs Printed by the Bureau ’s Consumer Cooperatives V. Description of the Invention (Ι3) The processing of time code signals and the generation of sound and subtitles are in step with the irradiation of the picture frame, so that the picture frame and the subtitles and sounds derived from their respective digital time codes overlap. It is displayed on the film and displayed on the screen at the same time as it is played in the theater. The two main processing methods for storing subtitle data in digital storage are (1) adjust the size of the data frame so that the number of text spaces included in the frame is just enough to accommodate the subtitles. Data (plus control data at the beginning and end of each box), and (2) use a fixed box size that is at least large enough to accommodate the maximum amount of data for any single subtitle, and the unused portion of the box remains blank 〇 For example, an LCLV pair with a typical 800x600 pixel array Level of subtitle information will require a maximum frame capacity of 8,64 0,000 bits (6 data bits / text space x 3 colors (R, G, B) x 800 x 600, reduced by any unused portion of LCLV * it is subject to restrictions Subtitles are caused by a fraction of the complete screen area) 0 6 bytes per typical byte or text space, and each text space represents a letter or number of subtitles, or a control text such as carriage return, backspace, transmission At the beginning, this article loads the buffer, prints the buffer content, and so on. By limiting the size of each frame to the number of text spaces required for special subtitles, the subtitle storage space can achieve considerable savings. An example of this processing method is shown in Figure 10, of which Example 3 Pen data box 11 4, 11, 6, 11 8 (not to scale). Each data box starts and ends with the control text 120, including the time code given to the box, and the subtitles or parts of the text shown in the box are 122 Is the length change; box II4 is the shortest subtitle, the box 116 is the longest, and box 118 is the middle length subtitle. Although storage space is economical, the variable size data frame processing method makes any individual box more difficult and Take the time to access, because the paper size of any special frame applies the Chinese National Standard (CNS) A4 specification (210 X 297 mm) — — 16 — ------ 1--1 ----- install! il — ι order ·! ----- line (please read the precautions on the back and then Λ- this page) A7 40 739 7 ____B7_ V. Description of the invention (l4) The correct position is unexpected. Taking a frame such as frame 11 8 will need to go fast (indicated by wide arrow I24) through the storage medium until it is positioned at the desired frame, followed by a slower reading of the frame itself (indicated by narrow arrow 1 26). The limitation can be mitigated by either the storage medium itself or a file generated by its computer controller, which associates individual time code units with their respective data frames in bit 1 of the storage medium. Figure 11 illustrates this procedure. First save The media is scanned to mark the positions of the boxes within the media (box I28). According to this scan, a file (illustrated by matrix 130) is generated on either the disc or other storage medium 132, or on the controller computer 134, so that each time code unit is associated with the position of the corresponding data frame (step 1 36) . Then when the time and time code data is input into the computer from the film (step 138), an almost instantaneous access can be made to jump to the corresponding frame position in the data storage (step 14). The access process without first generating this file Examples are shown in dotted lines. The time code data is entered into the system (step 142), and the fast forward of one frame after the other through the storage medium is started until the desired frame is positioned (step 144). The processing method of the fixed data frame size is illustrated in the figure as an example. 1 2 〇 Each box 146, 148, 150 includes the same amount of text space. 0 The text space required to store a specific subtitle or other supplementary visual display is filled, and the remaining space is left blank. This example is shown in the figure. 146 has a small amount of filled text space (indicated by shading), box 148 has a large amount of filled text space, and box 1 50 has a middle number. Because the length of each box is known in advance • Quick jump access is available Know the box required for time code input, no need to pre-scan. For either the variable frame size of Figure 10 or the fixed frame size of Figure 12, the data space needed to supplement the visual display can be made significant by extending each display frame to multiple time code frame periods. cut back. For example, in a known DTS system, the film runs at 30 films per second and 24 time code frames per second. If there is only one visual display frame for each of the 6 time code frames, the visual display will still have a time of 1/4 second Resolution: Although a high resolution is required for good audio reproduction, 1/4 second is sufficient for subtitles, and a factor of 6 reduces the data space required for subtitles. 0 The appearance of subtitle data is only for every 6 time code boxes. Once, and the same subtitles are shown as holding until the subtitle data changes. The subtitle data storage is quickly integrated with the audio track storage of the film, as illustrated in FIG. 13. Each data frame includes a start and end control text field 152, a subtitle text segment 154, and an audio data segment 156; or more control text can also be inserted between the subtitle and audio frequency bands to record the end and end of the subtitle data. The beginning of audio data. The audio data of the DTS system is stored in boxes of equal size. Since the capacity of the data storage of the sound track is much larger than that of the subtitle data, there are few advantages for adjusting the size of the subtitle text space to maximize the overall storage capacity in accordance with the size of each subtitle. In Figure 13, the subtitles are exaggerated relative to the audio data storage capacity. The sub-segment portion filled with a specific sub-screen can be shown in shadow again. For the first frame, there is only a relatively small part of the sub-segment 1 54 It is filled, and for the second frame, there is a larger filled part, and for the third frame, there is no subtitle at all.
