Abstract

A dental aerosol containment system includes a dental tool having an end effector adapted to interact with a maxillofacial structure, and a distal end opposing the end effector, the interaction having an aerosol or particulate debris associated therewith. A shroud extends about the dental tool and defines an opening having the end effector extending therethrough. The shroud being arranged to deflect the aerosol or particulate debris away from the distal end toward the end effector. Alternately, an opening of a nozzle is arranged adjacent to the end effector so as to allow the end effector to interact with the maxillofacial structure. The nozzle is arranged in fluid communication with the suction source such that the suction is imparted through the opening of the nozzle to draw the aerosol or particulate debris associated with the interaction between the end effector and the maxillofacial structure into the nozzle.

Description

牙科氣膠圍阻系統Dental Aerosol Containment System

本申請案與牙科系統有關,且更特別地與用於圍阻對個體進行牙科程序期間產生的氣膠或微粒碎屑的圍阻裝置有關。The present application relates to dental systems, and more particularly, to containment devices for containing aerosol or particulate debris generated during dental procedures on individuals.

Disease is often spread in the workplace, and the exposure risk is significantly higher for dental professionals using powered instruments such as ultrasonics, air polishers, and drills. Bacteria and viruses can spread rapidly through splashes, aerosols, and particulate debris from these types of handling. That is, for example, aerosols, particulate debris, and spatter produced by ultrasonic, drilling, and air polishing processes can contain saliva, blood, bacteria, and pathogens. Even though particulate debris and spatter can end up on surfaces immediately surrounding the treatment area, aerosol particles can remain in the environment for an hour or more once airborne. This is a risk for the spread of, for example, common cold and influenza viruses, herpes viruses, pathogenic Streptococcus or Staphylococcus, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), and Tuberculosis (TB), and is a major risk for dental professionals.

Thus, there is a need for a dental aerosol containment system for effectively regulating the spread of contamination and contamination by limiting the spread of dental aerosol and particulate debris resulting from a maxillofacial procedure, which addresses the limitations of prior art devices. limit. Preferably, the system should be effective without limiting the mobility of the dental tool, the accessibility of the dental tool to the maxillofacial structure, or the ability of the dental professional to see around or through the system. In addition, the system should be ergonomically compatible with the dental professional, for example, by allowing one-handed operation to allow the dental professional to use other instruments (eg, a dental mirror) while using the system.

The above and other needs are met by aspects of the present disclosure, which, in one particular aspect, provide a dental aerosol containment system, wherein the system includes a dental tool having a dental tool adapted to interact with a maxillofacial structure end effector. 1A, 1B, and 2A-2C illustrate a dental aerosol containment system 100 according to example aspects of the present disclosure. This system 100 includes or is associated with a dental tool or dental instrument 200 such as, for example, an ultrasonic cleaner, a pneumatic polisher, or a dental drill. The dental tool/instrument 200 generally includes an end effector 300 that is positioned and adapted to interact with a maxillofacial structure. This end effector 300 may include or be configured to receive, for example, a drill bit, abrasive bit, polishing tip, or the like. During this interaction between the end effector 300 and the maxillofacial structure, certain aerosols may be formed by interactions such as, for example, water, saliva, and/or blood associated with the maxillofacial structure. Aerosol. In addition to aerosol(s), certain particulate debris can also be airborne, where this particulate debris can include, for example, plaque/tartar, tooth/bone particles, and/or food particles. Aerosol(s) and/or particulate debris may be directed outwardly from the maxillofacial structure (eg, in the direction of an axis defined between end effector 300 and distal end 350 of dental tool 200).

Although aspects of the present disclosure are directed to dental procedures involving maxillofacial anatomy, one of ordinary skill in the art understands that the concepts of aerosol containment systems disclosed herein may be applied to, for example, orthopedic surgery, ENT surgery, and neurosurgery. Class of other surgical procedures that do not involve dental surgery. As such, the aspects of the disclosure presented herein are merely examples of applications of the disclosed principles and are not intended to be limiting. That is, aspects of the aerosol containment system disclosed herein can be applied to various parts of a patient in other ways to facilitate other types of surgery besides dental surgery.

In some aspects of the present disclosure, shield 400 is configured to extend around dental tool 200 and define an opening 450 having end effector 300 extending therethrough. More particularly, shield 400 is configured to deflect aerosol or particulate debris away from distal end 350 of dental tool 200 and back toward end effector 300 . As shown in FIG. 1A , in one aspect, the shield 400 may be a flat disk 500 defining a central opening forming the opening 450 . As shown in FIG. IB, the shield 400 may be positioned such that the dental tool 200 and/or the end effector 300 extend through the central opening such that the disc 500 deflects aerosol or particulate debris away from the distal end 350 of the dental tool 200 and Back to end effector 300 . Thus, for example, the disc 500 is removable/replaceable relative to the dental tool 200 by sliding the disc 500 along the dental tool 200 . In certain examples, the shield 400 is constructed of a translucent or transparent material (eg, a polymeric material) to allow the end effector 300 to be visible therethrough.

In another aspect, for example, as shown in FIG. 2A , the shroud 40 is defined by a hollow frustoconical member 600 that defines a longitudinal axis 625 . For example, as shown in FIG. 2B , the hollow frustoconical member 600 may be formed, for example, from a portion 605 (eg, half) of the disk 500 shown in FIG. 1A upon engagement between the corner ends 610 and 620 . Thus, for example, the hollow frusto-conical member 600 can be removed relative to the dental tool 200 by sliding the hollow frusto-conical member 600 along the dental tool 200 or by engaging/disengaging the corner ends 610 , 620 /replace. In this aspect, the shield 400 and dental tool 200 are positioned such that the dental tool 200 extends along the longitudinal axis 625 (see eg, FIG. 2C ). The hollow frustoconical member 600 further includes a smaller dimension end 650 and a larger dimension end 675 spaced along the longitudinal axis 625 , wherein the larger dimension end 675 defines the opening 450 of the shroud 400 . Thus, the hollow frustoconical member 600 configured in this manner can deflect aerosol or particulate debris away from the distal end 350 of the dental tool 200 and back toward the end effector 300 . In certain examples, the shield 400 is constructed of a translucent or transparent material (eg, a polymeric material) to allow the end effector 300 to be visible therethrough.

For example, in some aspects as shown in FIG. 3, the system 100 further includes a suction source 700 in fluid communication with the shroud 400, wherein the suction source 700 is configured to apply suction to the shroud 400, and wherein the suction is transmitted through The opening 450 defined by the larger dimension end 675 of the shroud 400 functions so that aerosol or particulate debris associated with the interaction between the end effector 300 and the jaw structure is drawn into the shroud by suction through the opening 450 within 400. In this example, the shroud 400 further defines a port 750 deployed near the smaller dimension end 650, wherein the suction source 700 is in fluid communication with the shroud 400 via the port 750, for example by means of suitable tubing 775.

In certain aspects of implementing the suction source, the shroud 400 , the port 750 , and the suction source 700 are configured to form a high volume extractor (HVE) for drawing a large volume of air into the shroud 400 through the opening 450 . In this manner, the aerosol or particulate debris is kept away from the distal end 350 of the dental tool 200, and the aerosol or particulate debris is removed from the environment near the procedure. In further removal of aerosol and/or particulate debris, for example, the system 100 may further include a filter provider 800 disposed between the shroud 400 and the suction source 700, wherein the filter provider 800 It is configured to filter out particles from the aerosol and/or particulate debris drawn into and through the shroud 400 .

In another aspect of the present disclosure, for example, as shown in FIG. 4, as previously indicated, the dental aerosol containment system 100 includes a dental tool 200 having a an end effector 300; and a suction source 700 configured to provide suction. In this aspect, the nozzle 900 has an opening 450 configured to deploy adjacent the end effector 300 of the dental tool 200 to allow the end effector 300 to interact with the jaw structure. The nozzle 900 is arranged in fluid communication with the suction source 700 such that suction is applied to the nozzle 900 and is effectively passed through the opening 450 of the nozzle 900 such that an aerosol or aerosol associated with the interaction between the end effector 300 and the jaw structure. The particulate debris is drawn into nozzle 900 by suction. In certain examples, the nozzle 900 is constructed of a translucent or transparent material (eg, a polymeric material) to allow the end effector 300 to be visible therethrough.

In some aspects, the nozzle 900 further defines a port 705 that is disposed in a spaced relationship with the opening 450 of the nozzle 900 , wherein the suction source 700 is in fluid communication with the nozzle 900 via the port 750 . In some examples, port 750 is further disposed in fluid communication with suction source 700 via conduit 775, wherein nozzle 900, port 750, and/or at least a portion of conduit 775 extend along dental tool 200 (see eg, FIG. 4). In the alternative, port 750 is in fluid communication with suction source 700 via conduit 750, and wherein nozzle 900, port 750, and/or at least a portion of conduit 775 engage dental tool 200 away from end effector 300. In some examples, nozzle 800 is movable relative to end effector 300 to allow for directional adjustment capabilities of suction applied to nozzle 900 and effectively through opening 450 .

在本揭露的特定態樣中,噴嘴900、埠750、及/或吸引源700被設置成形成大體積抽取器(HVE),用於將大體積空氣抽入噴嘴900內。在進一步移除氣膠及/或微粒碎屑中,舉例而言,系統100可進一步包含過濾提供件800,該過濾提供件800部署於噴嘴900與吸引源700之間,其中過濾提供件800被設置成濾出被抽入噴嘴900且通過噴嘴900的氣膠及/或微粒碎屑中的顆粒。In certain aspects of the present disclosure, nozzle 900 , port 750 , and/or suction source 700 are configured to form a high volume extractor (HVE) for drawing a high volume of air into nozzle 900 .
