Published: — with international search report (Art. 21(3)) (54) Title: PARTICLE MANIPULATION (57) : The present invention relates to the manipulation and, more particularly, to the sorting of particles. Still more particularly, the present in- vention relates to the use of acoustic waves, in- cluding surface acoustic waves, for the manipula- tion and sorting of particles. In an example, the present invention may be used for the sorting of cells. In an aspect of the invention, there is provided a device for manipulating a particle in a fluid suspension, the device comprising: (a) a sub- strate having a surface; (b) an acoustic source con- figured to generate and deliver an acoustic wave within a region of the substrate surface; and (c) a pillar disposed on the surface of the substrate and the pillar is configured to receive a channel, the channel configured to receive the fluid suspension, wherein the acoustic wave delivered within the re- gion of the substrate surface is delivered to the flu- id suspension in the channel through the pillar. A method using the device of the invention is also disclosed.
