Description
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention relates to a screed tool assembly for forrning a slope in a levelling compound towards a drainage outlet. In particular, the invention relates to a screed tool assembly comprises a rotary part rotatory fixed to a center portion that during use is fixed to the drainage outlet and provided with a rotating arrn with a screed blade that can be set to
predeterrnined angle.
BACKGROUND
Floors in rooms with a drainage outlet, such as a bathroom or a laundry are during construction provided with a slope towards the drainage outlet in order for water to be eff1ciently led to the drainage outlet. This is of particular importance in for example in a bathroom with a shower, wherein a large flow of water must be handled. Typically, rules and regulations, not at least relating to insurance terms and conditions, are in place and stipulate a minimum slope angle towards the drainage outlet and typically also a radial distance of a sloped area surrounding the drainage outlet. Corresponding rule and regulations may apply also to other rooms or facilities wherein a large flow of water is handled, for example professional kitchens, cleaning rooms,
medical and veterinarian facilities, industries, farms, slaughterhouses etc.
The slope towards the drainage outlet is today typically formed by manual labor wherein a craftsman forms the slope in a bed of cement, mortar, floor levelling compound or the like. This is commonly considered as a work requiring a high level of skill and experience and even a skilled artisan may from time to time produce a result that does not fulfill the requirements. The nature of the materials is also such that only one chance is given to get it right, if the cement or even concrete harden in an incorrect configuration it will be a tremendous amount of work to have it removed and replace. The removing a layer of concrete may damage lower imbedded parts of the construction such as heating pipes. In fact, errors in providing a correct slope and
sloped area are common construction error. Such errors may, if they go unnoticed, cause severe
and costly Water damages. If noticed for example during construction inspections, the errors
may be costly to f1x and the extra Work causing delays.
Simple tools such as height markers are provided and can be distributed in the area around the drainage outlet to provide the craftsman With an indication of the height/thickness of the floor levelling compound. Still these tools require a high level of skill in order to get the desired
result. Tools and devices that addresses the problems described above are known in the art:
SE50861 1C2 discloses a screed tool assembly that relies on a telescopic mast being fixed to the ceiling above the drain outlet in order to support a rotating screed arm and blade. The telescopic mast appears to hinder the craftsman to effectively Work With the drain outlet, especially given
the limited space Wherein a drain outlet is often found, for example a bathroom.
AU2006236000A1 discloses a screed tool assembly With a rotating screed arm and blade. The result appears to be dependent on that the drain outlet has been carefully and correctly levelled,
Which is not always the case.
There is a need Within this field for a screed tool assembly that are rigid enough and Which is arranged to be securely fastened to the drain outlet in order to provide the precision and repeatability that is required. Further there is a need for a tool that is easy to use under the sometimes pressing situation that Working With a quickly hardening floor levelling compound
may imposes.
SUMMARY
The object of the present invention is to overcome the drawbacks associated with prior art
locking devices. This is achieved by the screed tool assembly defined by the independent claim.
According to one aspect of the invention a screed tool assembly for forrning a slope in a levelling compound towards a drainage outlet is provided. The screed tool assembly will form a slope a predeterrnined angle towards the drainage outlet which has an inner chamber accessible from above and an upper surface being the upperrnost part of the drainage outlet. The screed tool assembly comprises: - a hub arranged to be at least partly inserted into the inner chamber of the drainage outlet and fixable to the inner chamber; - a levelling plate connected to hub; - a rotating center part which is j oined to the levelling plate with a center rotational axis and arranged to rotate freely around the center rotational axis; - a radial arm attached to the rotating center part and extending radially outwards; and - a blade attached to the radial arm and during use arranged to interact with the levelling compound. The rotating center part, the radial arm and the blade form rotating members of the screed tool assembly. The screed tool assembly is arranged so that the rotating center part is freely movable in the vertical direction along the rotational axis, and further comprises: - means for adjusting the relative position of the hub relative the levelling plate and thereby screed tool assembly may be adjusted to correct an incorrect levelling of the drainage outlet within a predeterrnined range, - a contact zone positioned at the innerrnost part of the blade def1ning a single point of contact between the rotating members and the drainage outlet, the blade extending from the contact zone to its radially distant end, wherein during use the contact zone of the blade is arranged to abut the upper surface of the drainage outlet; and - angle adjusting means arranged to provide an angle between the rotating center part and at least the blade, so that the angle of blade with regards to a horizontal level may be adjusted in that the radially distant end of the blade can be elevated and fixed at a higher level than the contact zone. The angle is fixable for example by a click-stop
arrangement or by providing tightening means.
According to one embodiment of the screed tool assembly the blade is rigidly attached to the radial arm and the angle adjusting means are arranged to provide an angle between the radial
arrn and the rotating center part.
According to one embodiment of the screed tool assembly the radial arrn is rigidly attached to the rotating center part and the angle adjusting means are arranged to provide an angle
between the radial arrn and the blade.
According to one embodiment of the screed tool assembly the means for adjusting the relative
position of the hub relative the levelling plate comprises at least three adjustment screws.
According to one embodiment of the screed tool assembly the radial arrn is extendable in the
radial outward direction.
According to one embodiment the screed tool assembly further comprises a first hub and a second hub wherein the first hub is arranged to be at least partly accommodated by a drainage outlet of a first type and the second hub is arranged to be at least partly accommodated in a drainage outlet of a second type, the part of the first hub to be accommodated by a drainage outlet of a first type having a different cross-sectional shape than the part of the second hub to be accommodated by a drainage outlet of the second type. According to one embodiment the part of the first hub to be accommodated by a drainage outlet of a first type has a circular cross-sectional shape and the part of the second hub to be accommodated by a drainage outlet
of the second type has a rectangular or quadratic shape.

The radial expander may comprise at least two rigid ring formed parts, an upper ring formed part and a lower ring formed part which are connected with pressing means arranged to press the upper and lower ring formed parts together, and a resilient ring provided in-between the upper ring formed part and the lower ring formed part, the resilient ring positioned so that it in an compressed state extends radially outwards from the periphery of
the upper ring formed part and the periphery of the lower ring formed part.
Thanks to the invention the complicated work of forrning a slope with a predeterrnined angle
towards the drainage outlet is simplified. It makes it considerably easier to comply to rulesand regulations and insurance requirements in both renovating existing facilities as well as in new constructions. The screed tool assembly saves time also for a skilled and experienced
craftsman.
One advantage afforded by the present invention is that the slope of the angle is easily
reproducible.
One advantage afforded by embodiments of the present invention is that the slope of the angle
can be set. Preset angles may be provided representing different requirement.
A further advantage of the screed tool assembly according to the present invention is the modular design allowing for the use of different types and sizes of blades and different types
and sizes of hubs corresponding to different types and sizes of drainage outlets.
Many additional benefits and advantages of the present invention will be readily understood by
the skilled person in view of the detailed description below and accompanying drawings.

invention in any manner.
The screed tool assembly is intended for use under the construction of a floor with a drainage outlet, or floor drain, and for ensuring a controlled slope towards the drainage outlet. Typically in such a step mortar, floor levelling compound, cement or even concrete is provided on the floor and after a resting time, wherein a desired texture of the material is achieved, a sloped area with a defined slope angle towards the drainage outlet is formed. The term “levelling compound” is hereinafter used to encompass all materials commonly used for this purpose, such as floor levelling compound, fiber reinforced floor leveling compound, bedding concrete,
surface mortar, mortar, cement, concrete and plaster.
A drainage outlet can be provided in many ways. Most commonly a prefabricated floor drain is used and mounted in connection with a floor pipe. Floor drains are typically standardized products but the design may differ, not at least in different countries and regions due to both tradition and regulations. A floor drain may comprise several different parts such as a separate detachable water trap and a grater and may also be provided with one or more risers or slabs to bring the floor drain to a specific height. The term “drainage outlet” is used hereinafter to encompass all types of floor drains and various sizes. One common type of drainage outlet has a general cylindrical shape, seen from above a circular shape, and can be described as a traditional drainage outlet, which still dominates the market. Another type of drainage outlet has a general rectangular shape, for example quadratic. The drainage outlet has a hollow intemal chamber that typically follows the general shape of the drainage outlet for example cylindrical in the case of the traditional drainage outlet. The drainage outlet has an upper surface that may be formed by the upper end-surface of a pipelike member alone, in the case of a traditional drainage outlet, but most commonly extends a distance, typically a few centimeters, in the radial direction out from the intemal chamber, forrning a radial flange. With the elongated drainage outlet the flange extends from the sides in an outward direction. The drainage outlet upper surface provides the position for the intersection with the levelling compound and a smooth
transition from the hardened compound to an inner part of the upper surface is one of the
requirements for the final construction. In particular, no part of the drainage outlet should be
above the lowest level of the levelling compound.
The screed tool assembly 100 according to the invention is schematically illustrated in Figures 1a-c, wherein a) is an elevated perspective view, b) an exploded perspective view and c) an intersectional side view. The screed tool assembly 100 comprises a hub 110 arranged to be at least partly inserted into the intemal chamber 183 of the drainage outlet 180, preferably in a tight fit arrangement or fixable by other means so that the hub 180 is prevented from moving within the intemal chamber during use of the screed tool assembly 100. Tight fit and fixable should be understood that such motion is prevented, but should be possible for an operator to remove the hub 110 from the outlet drainage 180 with normal muscular force. The hub 110 is connected to a levelling plate 120 with means for adjusting the relative position between the hub 110 and the levelling plate 120. The adjusting means preferably comprises three adjustment screws 122 arranged to adjust the relative position between the hub 110 and the levelling plate 120 and to securely fixate a desired position. This allows the levelling plate 120 to be accurately levelled even if the drainage outlet 110 deviates somewhat from being perfectly leveled, which is not uncommon. To aid the levelling, the levelling plate 120 may be provided with one or
more levels 128, for example spirit levels.
The screed tool assembly 100 further comprises a rotating center part 130 which is joined to the levelling plate 120 with a center rotational axis 125 and arranged to rotate freely around the center rotational axis 125. The center rotational axis 125 may be provided as a separate member or altematively as an integrated part of the levelling plate 120 or as an integrated part of the rotating center part 130. Preferably, the center rotational axis 125 is a separate member resting in a hole 121 in the levelling plate 120 and extending into a hole 131 in the rotating center part 130. The axis 125 and the corresponding holes 121, 131 should be arranged with a narrow tolerance so that there is no play with regards to the angle between the levelling plate 120 and the rotating center part 130. Hence, if the levelling plate 120 is correctly levelled, also the rotating center part 130 will be correctly levelled. As illustrated in Figure lc the levelling plate 120 plate may have a center portion 123 that extends downward into a center opening 113 of the hub 110. This extended center portion 123 provides, even if the major part of the levelling plate 120 is relatively thin, a long contact area between the levelling plate 120 and the center rotational axis 125 and secures a rigid structure. The rotating center part 130 is arranged to be freely movable in the vertical direction along the center rotational axis 125, at least within a
predefined distance. The distance of free motion in between the levelling plate 120 and thecenter rotational axis 125 in the vertical direction should be at least 0-5 cm. During norrnal operation of the screed tool assembly 100 the surface of the rotating center part 130 facing the upper surface of the levelling plate 120 should preferably not be in contact, i.e. during operation the connection of the rotating center part 130 to the stationary parts, the levelling plate 120 and the hub 110, should preferably be via the center rotational axis 125 only.
A radial arrn 140 is provided in connection with the rotating center part 130, either as a separate member or an integral part of the rotating center part 130. Attached to the radial arrn 140 is a blade 150. The blade 150 is preferably detachably fixed to the radial arrn 140 so that it can be replaced since it is typically subjected to wear and/or damage. According to the embodiment depicted in figures 1a-c the blade 150 is rigidly attached to the radial arrn 140 although detachable through the provided fastening means. The blade fastening means can for example be bults extending into the radial arrn 140 or the radial arrn 140 may be provided with threaded pins 141 extending through holes 158 in the blade 150 which is secured with nuts
The rotating parts are provided with angle adjustrnent means so that the angle of blade 150 with regards to the horizontal level may be adjusted in that the radially distant end 152 of the blade 150 can be elevated and fixed at a higher level than the contact zone 151. According to one embodiment, the embodiment illustrated in Figures 1a-c, the radial arrn 140 is a separate member from the rotating center part 130 and pivotally j oined to the rotating center part 130. A pivot joint may be formed by a pin or screw 127 extending through both the radial arrn 140 and the rotating center part 130, preferably in a section of the radial arrn 140 extending into the rotating center part 130. Angle adjustment means 126 may be provided on the rotating center part 130 and acting on the radial arrn 140 to set a desired angle. Angle adjustment means 126 may be provided as an adjustment screw 126 in threaded engagement with the rotating center part 130 and acting on the portion of the radial arrn 140 at a position radially inwards from the pivot joint 127. As appreciated by the skilled person a variety of other ways of arranging a
fixable angle adjustment exists and can be utilized.
According to one embodiment of the invention, schematically illustrated in a side view according to Figure 2, the radial arrn 140 is a fixed extension or integral part of the rotating center part 130, wherein fixed means fixed in the vertical direction. In order to provide for the angle adjustment of the blade 150, the radial arrn 140 is provided with means to adjust the angle in-between these parts, for example a hinge joint 155 positioned at the outerrnost part of the
radial arrn 140 and an adjustment screw 154 positioned radially inwards from the hinged joint
155 and preferably at the contact zone of the blade 150. A suitable range of the angle adjustment is 13200-1325. The angle of the slope may be regulated in certain countries and regions and the angle adjustment means may be provided with clear markings, click stops or the like to make
it easy to select one, or a few, prefer angles.
The rotating center part 130, the radial arm 140 and the blade 150 form the main rotating members of the screed tool assembly 100 and the hub 110 and the levelling plate 120 form the main stationary members. The blade 150 is provided with a contact zone 151 position at the innerrnost part of the blade 150 and defines a contact point of the rotating members with the drainage outlet 180, typically with the upper surface 185. The contacting zone 151 may be point-like i.e., the comer of the elongated edge of the blade 150 and the short side facing the levelling plate 120. Altematively, the comer may be rounded or beveled resulting in a contact zone 151 that extends a short distance in the radial direction. The contact zone 151 may for example extend a few millimeters and up to about a centimeter. The contact zone 151 provides, during use, a single point of contact between the rotating members and the drainage outlet 180. The upper surface 185 may be provided on a radially outwards extending flange 184 of the drainage outlet 180. Thereby, the contact zone 151 of the blade 150 also during use govems the distances between the levelling plate 120 and the rotating center part 130 and since the rotating center part 130 is freely movable in the vertical direction an automatic height adjustment of the rotating parts is achieved. In the case of a blade 150 with two or more edges, which will be further described below, and the edges extending an equal distance downwards, the contacting zone 151 will be split between the edges. However, with regards to defining the vertical position of the rotating members of the screed tool assembly 100 a single point of contact with the
drainage outlet 180 is provided also in this case.
According to one embodiment, schematically illustrated in Figures 1a-c and 2, the radial arm 140 is extendable in the radial outward direction. The extension may be provided by a first part 140a of the radial arm 140 being insertable and slidable into a second part 140b of the arm. Position locking means may be provided, for example by a locking screw arrangement 142. The locking screw arrangement 142 may comprise a handled 142a fixed to a bult 142b, the bult 142b being arranged to extend through holes in the first 140a and the second part 140b of the radial arm of which one hole is an elongated cut-out 140c and the other a circular hole 140d with a diameter slightly larger than the bult 142b. An elongated plate 142c with a threaded hole to engage with the bult 142b with dimensions that matches the interior of the first part 140a of
the radial arm 140 may be provided. Other type of locking means, for example a lick lock
arrangement may be envisaged. According to this embodiment the blade 150 is preferably attached only to the outer part of the radial arm 140 so that outer part of the radial arrn 140 is easily adjusted. Altematively, blade 150 of different length may be provided and the blade 150 is exchange if the length of the radial arrn 140 requires adjustment. The open end portions of the screed tool assembly 100 may be provided with covers or lids 102 that protects the interior
of the tool from levelling compound, for example.
It is important that the hub 110 provides a tight fit to intemal chamber 183 of the drainage outlet 180. According to one embodiment of the invention the screed tool assembly 100 can be provided with exchangeable hubs 110, wherein each hub is designed to correspond to a specific drainage outlet or a specific range of drainage outlet. A dedicated hub may take advantage of a specific design of a drainage outlet, for example using ridges or outer protruding parts that are provided in the intemal chamber 183 to support intemal parts such as a water lock, to increase the stability. Additionally, the hub can be provided in other shapes than the depicted cylindrical, for example a shape with a quadratic or rectangular cross-section to fit to drainage outlets of corresponding shape. The modular design of the screed tool assembly 100 according to the
invention makes it easy to provide different hubs 110 and for the craftsman to exchange hubs.
According to one embodiment, schematically illustrated in the cross-sectional view of a hub 310 in Figure 3, the hub 310 is provided with fastening means provided to secure the hub 310 in the intemal chamber 183. According to one embodiment the fastening means is a radial expander, providing an expansion in the radial direction outwards from a center portion of the hub 310 and the outer part of the radial expander being arranged to, during the expansion, to press against the walls of the intemal chamber 183 and wherein that pressure is maintained during the use of the screed tool assembly 100. A radial expander may be provided in that the hub 310 comprises of two rigid ring formed parts, an upper ring formed part 380:1 and a lower ring formed part 380:2, which are connected with pressing means, for example at least three screws 380:3 that can press the upper and lower ring formed parts together. Provided in- between the upper ring formed part 380:1 and a lower ring formed part 380:2 is a resilient ring 380:4, for example an O-ring of regular type. The resilient ring 380:4 is arranged such that upon the upper ring formed part 380:1 and the lower ring formed part 380:2 being pressed towards each other parts of the resilient ring 380:4 expand in the radial direction out of the cylindrical periphery of the hub 310. The resilient ring 380:4 is dimensioned and positioned close to the periphery of the upper ring formed part 380:1 and the periphery of the lower ring formed part
380:2 so that it in the compressed state the resilient ring extends radially outwards from theperiphery of the upper ring formed part 38031 and the periphery of the lower ring forrned part 380:2. Thereby the hub 310 can be securely fixed in the internal chamber 183. The screws 380 :3 may preferably be positioned under through openings in the levelling plate 120 so that the screws 38033 are easily accessible from above. Other suitable types of radially expanding means would be known to the skilled person and also preferably being made accessible from above
the levelling plate
The radial arm 140 may have a length of 30-70 cm and the blade 150 a length of 20-60 cm. The materials found in the screed tool assembly 100 according to the invention are materials typically utilized in tools such as steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and polymers. The bladeis preferably made of a hardened and wear resistant steel.
According to one embodiment the blade 150 is a screed blade 450, as schematically illustrated in the view from the front in Figure 4a, is a double blade with a leading edge 455 and a trailing edge 456. During use the leading edge 455 perforrns the screeding, or scraping, action and the trialing edge 456 provides support on the surface of the floor levelling material. This design
enables using the screed tool assembly 100 in both rotational directions.
