Description
The present invention relates to a detonation device for a perforating gun, and more specifically a detonation device of the Exploding Bridge-wire (EBW) type. A common electric detonator of this type, which is usually used when perforating oil and gas wells, typically contains an electric bridge wire embedded or cast in an ignition mixture, plus an ignition charge and a propellant charge.
Hovedulempene ved slike elektriske detonatorer er: The main disadvantages of such electric detonators are:
1. They contain sensitive incendiary explosives and must be handled with care to avoid accidental ignition by mechanical impact, and 2. They can be easily fired electrically, requiring only 0.5A or less to be applied over a few milliseconds. They are therefore particularly sensitive to any source that may inadvertently emit this energy, such as electric welding equipment, radio transmitters, devices for cathodic protection as well as faulty drilling rig machinery and equipment. In order to protect against such unwanted electrical power input, all equipment and machinery that could produce such energy dispersion must often be switched off for longer periods of time, and the wellhead and the drilling rig monitored to detect scattered voltages.
In contrast, EBW detonators contain no incendiary explosives, making them insensitive to triggering by mechanical impact and therefore safer to handle than conventional detonators. In addition, they are immune to triggering from such external power sources which are usually located in the well drilling area or the drilling rig. However, successfully firing an EBW detonator requires the use of a special electronic circuit capable of producing a high voltage, high current pulse of energy. However, this electronic circuit will still be able to pick up unwanted alternating voltages, high-frequency voltages and direct voltages from the many above-mentioned drilling rig sources, also including lightning strikes, which will therefore inadvertently cause the firing of the EBW detonator.
It is therefore necessary to design electrical firing circuits for EBW detonators so that they include fuse circuits that isolate the detonator's firing circuit from random voltages, thereby preventing accidental release of the perforating gun's explosive charges.
NO 951851. A related firing unit is previously known which is shown in the same applicant's Norwegian patent application no. NO 951851. This application was not generally available when the present application was submitted (i.e. a so-called § 2.2.2 opposition). From this resistance, however, neither series-connected, resistive elements, nor counter-connected diodes were known, which helps to make the solution even more secure. The present invention overcomes the present problems of the prior art by producing an exploding bridge wire (EBW) type detonation device for firing a perforating tool in a well, the perforating tool (10) comprising a direct current source on the earth's surface and which source is connected to the perforating tool through an electrical line connected to the perforating tool, and wherein the detonating means comprises a high voltage power supply to produce a DC ignition voltage capable of firing an EBW detonator in the perforating tool, an electrical fuse circuit interposed between the DC source and the high voltage power supply for the purpose of preventing a multiplier circuit inadvertently activated by random alternating, high frequency and direct voltages present in the well-drilling area, and a firing circuit to receive the ignition voltage from the high voltage power supply and apply the ignition voltage to the EBW detonator. The electronic fuse circuit comprises an input terminal for connection to the source on the surface, where the input terminal comprises a connection point for input voltage and an input ground connection, an output terminal for connection to the high-voltage power supply, where the output terminal comprises a connection point for output voltage and an output ground connection which is connected to the input ground connection, a surge protector connected between the input voltage connection point and the input ground connection, and a series circuit connected from the input voltage connection point to the output voltage connection point and comprising at least one resistive element connected to the input voltage connection point, a reverse biased diode connected to the resistive elements , and at least one forward-biased zener diode connected between the reverse-biased diode and the output voltage connection point. In addition, the electrical fuse circuit comprises a capacitive element connected to ground and the connection between the resistive element and the reverse-biased diode, and a further forward-biased zener diode connected between the output voltage connection point and ground.

In Figures 1 and 2, there is shown a wire-suspended perforating tool 10, which includes an EBW detonation circuit device 24, immersed in a borehole 14 that has been drilled in an earth formation 12. Perforating tool 10 is shown at a distance from a nearby steel liner 16 which is embedded in the borehole 14 until a formation 13 of interest. The tool 10 is suspended in an ordinary single-conductor or multi-conductor cable 18 which travels over a block sheave 26 and is wound on a winch drum 28. The perforating tool 10 is raised and lowered in the borehole 14 by means of the cable drum 28 by "unwinding" the cable 18 in order to lowering the perforating tool 10 in the borehole, or "reeling" the cable 18 to raise the perforating device in the borehole 14. Depth measurements are carried out from the travel of the lead cable over the block disk 2 6 and are transmitted to the control equipment 3 0 on the ground surface via a cable or conductor 32. Electrical energy for operation of the perforation tool 10, including the necessary control signals for firing the tool, is supplied through the cable 18 from the control equipment 30.
The perforation tool 10 comprises a perforation gun 20, an EBW detonator and voltage amplifier 22, in the EBW detonation circuit 24 according to the invention which cooperates with the EBW part 22, as well as a cable head 25 connected to the cable 18 and the regulation equipment 30. As the particular is shown in Figures 2 and 3, the expendable EBW detonation circuit 24 comprises a fuse circuit module 35, a high voltage power supply module 37 and a firing circuit module 39. The EBW firing circuit 24 receives DC power for operating the EBW and voltage amplifier section 22 for the purpose of firing the perforating gun 20 , from a direct current source 40 arranged in the regulation equipment 30 on the ground surface for transmission through the single-conductor or multi-conductor cable 18 and the cable head 25.
Reference should now be made to Figures 1-6, for a detailed description of the operation of the preferred embodiment of the EBW detonation circuit device 24. Electrical direct current power is transmitted from the power source 40 in the equipment 30 on the ground surface through the cable 18 and the cable head 25 to the input of the fuse circuit module. The direct current power (200-220 volts) is supplied to one side by a surge voltage protector (SVP) 42, set to a predetermined breakdown voltage which is significantly higher than the input voltage from the power source 40. Said SVP protects against accidental over-energization of the power supply 37 and the firing circuit 39, such as may be caused by high random direct voltages induced in the circuit, possibly produced by a lightning strike near the perforating tool 10 or other impact of direct current effect on the well drilling area. In the event that a voltage equal to or greater than the breakdown voltage of the SVP 42 is applied to the input of the EBW detonating circuit 24, the SVP 42 will become conductive and connect the input of the circuit 35 directly to ground potential (the housing of the perforating gun).
The 200 volts applied to SVP 42 is then also present across a collection of resistors and capacitors which comprise series-connected resistors 50, 51, 52 and 53 as well as a battery of parallel-connected capacitors 54-56. The capacitor bank 54-56 will act as an open circuit for DC power, but will provide a low-impedance path for grounding any AC or high-frequency voltages applied to the input of circuit 35. Although the capacitor bank 54-56 is shown to contain several capacitors in parallel, the entire the battery is replaced with a single capacitor of the same value as the total capacitance of the battery 54-56. Similarly, resistors 50-53 may be replaced with a single resistor given the same value as the combined resistance of all resistors 50-53. Any random alternating voltage or high-frequency voltage of significant strength will then produce a current above the trip value for the fuse 44, so that the fuse will be triggered and block the input to the fuse circuit module 35 and thereby prevent activation of the high-voltage module 37. Such alternating voltages and/or high-frequency voltages on the input may possibly be caused by nearby power generator machines, radio transmitters, radar equipment, incorrect drilling rig coupling or equipment, or possibly by similar sources that may be present in the well drilling area. The majority of the energy produced by any current fault will be dissipated as heat by the resistors 50-53, which are then mounted on a thermally conductive stem to further dissipate the heat to the surroundings.
When power is supplied to the circuit 35 as described above, the diode 58 will be conductive and transfer the direct voltage to the series-connected Zener diodes 59, 60 and 62. The task of these Zener diodes 59, 60 and 62 is to prevent voltages below approximately 150 volts direct current from passing to the module 32 for high voltage power supply. A Zener diode 64 will conduct at a predetermined applied voltage to prevent overvoltage from being emitted from the output of the fuse circuit module as an input voltage to the high voltage module 37.
The output voltage from the fuse circuit module 35 then constitutes the input voltage to the input side of the module 3 7 for high-voltage power. Resistors 68 and 70 serve as current limiting resistors to prevent activation of the selected integrated circuit (IC) 78 until approximately 130 volts direct current is applied from power source 40. The capacitor and resistors 72, 74 and 76 form a bias circuit of resistance and capacitance for the purpose of biasing the selected IC circuit 78 and setting the frequency and pulse width of the generated series of alternating current pulse signals for the purpose of supplying triggering alternating current pulses to the integrated circuit 84, as will be further explained below. The output pulse train from IC circuit 78 is applied through current limiting resistor 80 and integrated circuit 84, which is made conductive for each pulse. Resistor 86 also acts as a current limiting resistor. IC 84 merely serves as a switch to rapidly send pulses of alternating current through inductor 82. The rapidly rising and falling electromagnetic fields in inductor 82 produced by the current pulses through the inductor will then produce a series of high voltage spikes, which will constitute the input voltage to the stacked voltage multiplier circuit, as will be described below.
The output of the inductor/transformer 82 is applied to a conventional stacked voltage doubler circuit (multiplier) to multiply the applied voltage by a predetermined value and thereby produce an output voltage of at least three thousand volts direct current to be applied to the firing circuit module 39. The voltage doubler circuit comprises a combination of capacitors 88, 90 , 92, 94, 96, 98 and diodes 100, 102, 104, 106, 108 connected in cascade and connected to the firing circuit module 39 through diode 110.
The output from the high-voltage power supply module 37 is applied as an input voltage to the firing circuit module 39 through current limiting resistors 112 and 114. Resistor 118 functions as a diversion resistor for the capacitor 116. In series with resistor 112 is another SVP 120, which has a trigger value at the desired voltage for firing the EBW 22, usually in excess of 3000 volts DC, and which will conduct when the capacitor 116 has reached its set voltage value to supply the voltage at the output of the firing circuit 39 to the EBW and ignition charge in part 22 for the purpose of triggering the EBW and fire the perforation cannon. A resistor 119 is placed in parallel with the SVP 120 between the output of the circuit 39 and the capacitor 116 and the resistor 118 in combination, thereby acting as a decoupling resistor for the capacitor 116 and allowing an indirect voltage reading across the storage capacitor 116 for testing purposes. During surface testing prior to the time the EBW detonator circuit 24 is connected to the circuit for the perforating tool 10, a load resistor (or a dummy EBW) may be connected to the output leads of the firing circuit 39 and the determined 200 volts DC applied to the input of the fuse circuit 35. A test voltmeter can also be connected across the output leads from the circuit 39 and a measurement of the voltage across the capacitor 116 can be carried out to confirm that the circuit is working correctly.
