Abstract

One binary level (e.g. 0) is always transmitted as one ternary level (e.g. 0), while the other binary (e.g. 1) is converted to the next member of an alternating sequence of the two other levels (e.g. +1, -1). Character groups of eight bits plus one status or parity bit are transmitted. By permitting specified departures from the alternating rule the ninth bit of each group is made redundant. For example, the data group 0000 0000 is preferably converted to 0000 0011, where the last digit (1) has the same ternary level as its precursor.
