Description

Method for manufacturing a plastic packing
The invention relates to a method for manufacturing a plastic packing particularly although not exclusively intended for foodstuff, which packing at least comprises a box having a first edge, which box is connectable to a lid having a second edge wherein the first edge and the second edge can cooperate to form a releasable snap connection so as to keep the lid on the box .
Such a manufacturing method is known from the Dutch patent 1038469. The known method of manufacturing such a plastic packing applies injection molding. According to this method the box and the lid are manufactured simultaneously, and in the process certain steps are performed to perforate the connection between the box and the lid to make them easily separable. The edges of the box and the lid can then be used to form a snap connection for releasably connecting the lid to the box. There are several disadvantages with this known method, one of which being that injection molding only allows for manufacturing of plastic packing from material that is less transparent and that is less optimal in forming a gas barrier. Consequently the plastic packing manufactured with the known method suffers from the notable disadvantage that it is less suitable for packing perishable foodstuff.
It is an object of the invention to propose an alternative method and plastic packing manufactured by said method which is well-equipped for packing perishable foodstuff.
According to the invention the method for manufacturing such a plastic packing which is tailored for packing perishable foodstuff has the features of one or more of the appended claims.
According to a first aspect of the invention the box and the lid are made simultaneously by thermoshaping a sheet of plastic material. Apart from the fact that this method of production is very well-equipped for realizing a high throughput, the method is also very suitable to process transparent plastic such as APET. This material further has the benefit of having excellent barrier properties for gas such as oxygen, making it an excellent packing material for perishable food- stuff .
Beneficially the sheet of plastic material is provided by unwinding a reel of said plastic material, whereafter the sheet is heated and formed into shape with a mold.
With a view to prepare in one process step both the box and the lid for the box, it is preferable that on the inside of the mold's outer circumference a perforating cut is made in the sheet of plastic material that delimits on the one hand the first edge of the eventual box, and on the other hand delimits the second edge of the lid. A further process step is that after thermoshaping the sheet of plastic material an outside through-cut is made separating the box and the lid from the sheet of material. After separating the box and the lid from the sheet of material, same is stacked for further processing.
The invention will hereinafter be further elucidated with reference to the drawing of a single figure representing the sequential process steps of the method of the invention.
The method of manufacturing a plastic packing according to the invention aims at making the box and the lid for the box simultaneously by thermoshaping a sheet 1 of plastic material.
The sheet 1 of plastic material is provided by unwinding a reel 2 of said plastic material, whereafter the sheet 1 is heated with heating means 3 and formed into shape with a mold 4. Within the boundaries 5 of the mold's 4 outer circumference a perforating cut is made in the sheet 1 of plastic material at position 6 that delimits on the one hand an edge of the eventual box 8, and on the other hand delimits an edge of the lid 7. This provides a semi-attachment between the box 8 and the lid 7. The function and aim of this process step will be explained hereinafter.
After thermoshaping the sheet 1 of plastic material a through-cut 9 is made separating the box 8 and its semi attached lid 7 from the sheet 1 of material. After separating the box 8 and the semi attached lid 7 from the sheet 1 of material, same is stacked for further processing, in particular by taking the boxes 8 and the semi attached lids 7 to a filling line where the boxes are filled with the perishable food stuff to be packed. Such a filling line is known to the skilled person and requires therefore no further elucidation.
The filling line is completed in known manner by a station at which a plastic film is applied to the filled box 8 and its semi attached lid 7. The plastic film is made to attach only to the lid 7. Preferably the plastic material of the sheet 1 from which the boxes and lids are made, but also the material of the plastic film is APET, which is both transparent and forms an excellent gas barrier.
One of the aspects of the method according to the invention is that the neighboring edges of the box 8 and the lid 7 can form a releasable snap connection. When a user opens the box 8 to make use of its packed foodstuff, the user must separate the lid 7 completely from the box 8 by disconnecting the connections of the box and lid between the perforated cut. Due to this separating action the plastic film that closes off the box 8 and which connects to the edge of the lid 7, is detached from the box 8. The box may be re-closed again by placing the lid with the film attaching thereto back on the box. The neighboring edges of the box and lid then function as a releasable snap connection to make repeated opening and closing of the box possible.
