Description
ASSEMBLY OF A COVER LAYER HAVING AN ADHESIVE AREA PROVIDED WITH A REMOVABLE PROTECTIVE LAYER AND AN APPLICATOR FOR APPLYING THE COVER LAYER TO A PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICE
The present invention relates to an assembly of a cover layer having an adhesive area provided with a removable protective layer and an applicator for applying the cover layer to a portable electronic device.
Portable electronic devices are nowadays part of daily life. The portable character makes the devices vulnerable to all kinds of damage, such as scratches on the displays. Especially smart phones that are usually carried along in clothing or bags are easily damaged. A wide variety of protective films has been developed to protect portable electronic devices. For instance screen protectors are widely used to protect the displays of smart phones. As an alternative full body protection packages are also available on the market. Typically these protective products comprise a cover layer having an adhesive area provided with a removable protective layer to prevent exposure of the adhesive to lint, dust and fingerprints as well as unintentional sticking during alignment of the cover layer with respect to the portable electronic device. For many users applying the cover layer in the right manner appears to be difficult and time consuming.
An assembly according to the preamble is known from US 2013/0048203.
The known assembly comprises first and second opposing tabs on the cover layer to align the cover layer with respect to the portable electronic device. The cover layer is then adhered in the aligned position to the portable electronic device by a minority portion of the adhesive area that was exposed prior to the alignment by removing a minority portion of the removable protective layer. Subsequently a majority portion of the adhesive area is exposed and adhered to the portable electronic device. Once adhesion is completed the tabs are removed from the cover layer.
The known assembly has the disadvantage that the aligned position of the cover layer can only be maintained by adhering (part of) the cover layer to the portable electronic device.
The present invention has for its object to allow aligning and maintenance of an aligned position of the cover layer without adhering the cover layer to the portable electronic device.
According to the invention the applicator is arranged for removably fastening to the cover layer and the applicator is further arranged for removably fastening to a side of the portable electronic device to temporarily attach the cover layer to the portable electronic device in an aligned position, such that, in the assembled state, the cover layer can be pivoted to allow removal of the removable protective layer from the adhesive area and subsequent adhesion of the cover layer to the portable electronic device.
The applicator of the assembly according to the invention allows precise alignment of the cover layer with respect to the portable electronic device and ensures maintenance of the precisely aligned position in the assembled state, wherein the removable protective layer can be removed from the adhesive area and the cover layer can be adhered to the portable electronic device.
In a first preferred embodiment the cover layer is provided on the top side with a removable protective top layer and the applicator is arranged for fastening to the top layer.
In an elegant preferred embodiment the applicator comprises a first portion that is arranged for removably fastening to a side of the portable electronic device by adhering.
According to a first preferred embodiment the applicator further comprises a second portion arranged for fastening to the cover layer or top layer by adhering. Preferably the applicator is a sticker.
According to a second preferred embodiment the applicator is formed as an extension of the cover layer or top layer, wherein the extension is arranged for removably fastening to a side of the portable electronic device by adhering.
In a practical embodiment the applicator comprises printable material on which instructions for proper use are printed.
The invention also relates to a method for applying a cover layer having an adhesive area provided with a removable protective layer to a portable electronic device using an assembly according to any of the preceding claims, whereby the method comprises the following steps: a) aligning a cover layer as described as part of an assembly according to the invention with respect to a portable electronic device until a desired aligned position is reached; b) removably fastening an applicator as described as part of an assembly according to the invention to a side of the portable electronic device to temporarily attach the cover layer to the portable electronic device in the aligned position; c) pivoting the cover layer away from the portable electronic device to a position wherein the removable protective layer can be removed from the adhesive area; d) removing the removable protective layer from the adhesive area; e) pivoting the cover layer towards the portable electronic device while adhering the cover layer in the aligned position to the portable electronic device; and f) removing the applicator from the cover layer.
The invention will now be described referring to the drawings, wherein:
Figures 1A through 1F illustrate schematic views of a preferred embodiment of an assembly according to the present invention.
Figures 1A through 1F schematically show a preferred embodiment of an assembly 1 according to the present invention in different views illustrating its use.
Figure 1A illustrates an exploded view of the assembly according to the present invention in a preferred embodiment. In the preferred embodiment shown assembly 1 comprises a cover layer, formed by a screen protector 10 for a smart phone 100, and an applicator 2 for applying the screen protector 10 to the smart phone 100.
Screen protector 10 is typically transparent. Screen protector 10 has an adhesive area on the bottom side thereof. The screen protector 10 is preferably made of an optically clear material of scratch resistant type such as polyvinyl, polyurethane or poly carbonate. The adhesive area is provided with a first removable protective layer 12 also known in the art as a release liner. Such a release liner is necessary to prevent exposure of the adhesive to lint, dust and fingerprints and prevent unintentional adhering of the screen protector 10 to the display of the smart phone 100.
Screen protector 10 is on the top side thereof also protected by a second removable protective layer 15 that will be referred to as top layer. Such a top layer is used to protect the cover layer from damaging.
Applicator 2 is suitable for use with any type of layer provided with an adhesive area intended to be adhered to the surface of a portable electronic device. Applicator 2 has a first portion 2A arranged for removably fastening to a side of the smart phone 100 and a second portion 2B arranged for fastening to the top layer 15.
In the preferred embodiment shown the first portion 2A and the second portion 2B of the applicator 2 are arranged for (removably) fastening by adhering. Suitable adhesives that allow fastening to a top layer of a screen protector are known per se in the art. Suitable adhesives that allow removable fastening to a portable electronic device such as a smart phone are known per se in the art. The adhesive area at the first portion 2A is preferably protected by a release liner 2C. A tab 2D is present on the release liner 2C to facilitate removal of the release liner from applicator portion 2A.
As an alternative to the preferred embodiment shown applicator 2 may be formed as one or more extensions to top layer 15. One extension may suffice having the shape of first portion 2A. Preferably the extensions are arranged for removably fastening by adhering. Each extension preferably is also provided with a release liner having a tab similar to applicator portion 2A. The extensions may alternatively be present on the screen protector and can be removed by torning or cutting them along an edge.
In the preferred embodiment shown in figure 1A the second portion 2B of the applicator 2 has an arcuate shape. Preferably the applicator comprises printable material on which instructions for proper use are printed. Several types of suitable printable material can be used, such as paper or plastic. In the preferred embodiment shown the applicator 2 can generally be referred to as a sticker.
The use of the assembly 1 and more specifically the applicator 2 according to the present invention is illustrated stepwise in the figures 1B through 1F and will be discussed herein below. The illustrated steps are method steps for using the assembly for applying an adhesive screen protector to a portable electronic device, more specifically a smart phone.
Figure 1B illustrates an easy way to align assembly 1 including screen protector 10 with respect to smart phone 100. Screen protector 10 is positioned precisely on the screen of smart phone 100. When the optimal aligned position is found, the assembly can be fixated and portion 2A of applicator 2 can be folded to adhere to the side of the smart phone 100. The applicator is now temporarily fastened to the portable electronic device 100. This assembled state is represented in figure 1C.
Next the removable protective bottom layer 12 needs to be removed from the screen protector 10 to free the adhesive area of the screen protector 10.
Conveniently the applicator 2 thereby acts as a hinge H allowing pivoting movement of the assembly with the screen protector 10 with respect to the smart phone 100. The assembly with the screen protector 10 can be folded open while remaining the desired alignment with respect to the smart phone 100. Release liner 12 can be removed, for instance using a tab 13 present on the release liner. Once the adhesive area of the screen protector 10 is free, the screen protector can be easily adhered to the display of the smart phone 100 by folding the screen protector 10 back into the aligned position of figure 1B. This is shown is figure 1E.
Finally the applicator 2 needs to be removed from the screen protector 10 and the smart phone 100. In the preferred embodiment shown this is performed by removing the top layer 15 from the screen protector 10. Tab 14 present on the top layer can be used for this purpose. The screen protector 10 is now applied to the smart phone 100 as shown in figure 1F.
It is noted that the term “adhesive” refers to a wide variety of adhesives, including solvent based adhesives, polymer dispersion adhesives, emulsion adhesives, contact adhesives, hot adhesives, and pressure sensitive adhesives. As used herein an adhesive may be used to adhere two components or materials to one another permanently, semi-permanently, for a fixed time period or temporarily. For example a pressure sensitive adhesive may be employed that could allow the screen protector to be selectively removed days, weeks, months or even years after its initial adhesion to the portable electronic device. When referring to the applicator, adhesion to the portable electronic device and to the screen protector is for a shorter period of time and is referred to as temporarily.
It is envisaged that the assembly according to the present invention is not limited to the preferred embodiment shown. In general the applicator may form an assembly with all suitable types of cover layers (with or without top layer) with adhesive areas for use on all types of portable electronic devices. Another example of such a cover layer can be a decorative cover layer for decorating other parts of electronic devices other than the screen. The dimensions of the applicator are preferable universal for each type of portable electronic device. Examples of portable electronic devices other than smart phones include, but are not limited to touch screen devices, such as tablets, personal digital assistants, laptops and camera’s.
