Description
Interactive video, method for making and website for displaying such video
The present invention relates to an interactive video, a method for making such video, and a website for displaying such video.
5
It is well-known that objects used in movies or video clips, in particular clothing worn by movie- or pop stars, have a great attraction to the public. Possessing such objects or clothes gives the owner of such objects a sense of belonging, and offers a way to express his or her adoration.
10
However, this liking is often volatile, and in order to sell these objects to possibly interested buyers, merchants need to strike while the iron is hot. That is why one often finds all kinds of merchandise offered at concerts, or similar events. However, movies and video clips are more often watched in a private environment, and in particular on a 15 computer screen or the screen of a similar device. This makes traditional merchandising techniques obsolete.
It is a goal of the present invention to propose an alternative to the existing merchandising techniques, and in general to come up with a useful contribution to the 20 art.
The present invention does so with a method for making a video interactive, comprising the steps of: in a video recording, registering the location of at least one object to have 25 functionality; - generating a transparent layer comprising the location of the at least one object marked; assigning functionality to at least the location of the at least one object in the transparent video; 30 - displaying the transparent video as a layer over the original video.
The invention enables a watcher to directly interact with contents of the movie, like objects or persons. In practice, everything that is visible in the video recording can be made interactive, also buildings, locations, etc. Displaying the transparent video over 2 the original video has the specific advantage that the original video does not need to be altered, which does not only prevent copyright infringements, but also makes the method more flexible. A further advantage is that the video does not need to be interrupted, but it can continue to play, while actions are performed on or from the 5 transparent video.
Assigning functionality to an object may for instance comprise assigning an action to the event of moving a mouse over the at least one object in the transparent layer. A so called tooltip or a change in the mouse-pointer when the mouse is moved over an object 10 may indicate that said object is an interactive object. It is also possible that an indication is given outside the area for displaying the video, for instance a field that displays extensive information about the object. Highlighting the object itself is another option.
Assigning functionality may also comprise assigning an action to the event of clicking 15 the at least one object in the transparent layer. Clicking may result in selecting the object, and/or opening a hyperlink that leads to details of the at least one object.
Such details-page may for instance comprise an option to purchase the object or a similar object, or lead to a page with detailed information about the abject, such as 20 relevant background information. It is also thinkable that the watcher of the video may change attributes of the object, such as its colour or even the entire object. In that case, an object is displayed in the additional layer, that camouflages the originally displayed object.
25 The invention is not limited to streaming media, but it may be applied on video-files stored for example on CD’s, DVD’s or Blue-Ray disks, where one or more additional layers may be present with the video file itself, or they may be added to a website configured for displaying a video recording, such as a video stream, and for displaying a layer on top of the video recording, comprising at least an indication of a location of at 30 least one object marked in the video file and assigning functionality to at least the location of the at least one object in the transparent video.
3
Such website may comprise a database with layers for various video recordings. Depending on a video selected by a user, an additional layer is displayed on top of the video recording, if it is available for said video.
5 The invention will now be elucidated into more detail with reference to the following figures, wherein: - Figure 1 shows an original video file, with a transparent layer; - Figure 2 shows a transparent layer with an object marked.
10 Figure 1 shows a still of an original video file, showing a singer wearing a hat. The video file is shown on a website for video files. One cannot interact with items shown in the video file.
Figure 2 shows a schematic view of a transparent layer, with an object from the video 15 file marked. Evidently, in a practical realisation nothing is visible from the transparent layer. Once it is displayed over the original video file, a watcher cannot see a difference between the original video and the one covered with the transparent layer. The transparent layer has the same length and size as the video file, and it comprises positions of objects indicated.
20
It’s functionality comprises an action to the event of moving a mouse over the object, in particular indicating that the object is interactive. Furthermore, to the event of clicking the object the functionality of opening a hyperlink that leads to details of the at least one object is assigned. The details-page comprises an option to purchase the at 25 least one or a similar object, for instance in a webshop.
