Description

Door handle for aircraft trolley or galley
Field of the invention 5 The invention relates to a door of a trolley or galley for use in transportation means. The invention further relates to a storage unit for use in transportation means, being a trolley or a galley, comprising such a door. The invention further relates to a galley comprising at least one such storage unit.
10 Background A galley is the compartment of transportation means, such as an aircraft or train, where food is cooked and prepared. The galleys on commercial airlines or trains typically not only facilitate to serve and store food and beverages, but may also contain other equipment else flight attendants may need during the flight.
15 A typical galley may contain one or more trolleys located in one or more compartments in the galley. A trolley is a cuboids sized vacuum container comprising an inner space for stowing food and beverages. There are two main sizes of trolleys in use with the airlines around the world, called the “ATLAS” and “KSSU” sizes. ATLAS is by far the most common size, used by approximately 80% of the airlines. The trolley is 20 preferably stowed and secured when not used, such as during taxiing, take-off, turbulent weather and landing.
Fig. la shows a galley according to the prior art. In Fig. la, a typical trolley 3 is installed in a compartment 1 of an galley 5. The trolley 3 may comprise a plurality of drawers 7 slideable provided in different layers inside the trolley 3. The trolley 3 may 25 comprise a plurality of wheels 9 for moving the trolley 3 along the aircraft.
The trolley 3 further comprises a door 11 to gain access to an inner space of the trolley 3 and to close the inner space after use. The galley 5 may further comprises closets that also comprise such a door 11 with a similar door handle 13.
Fig. lb shows such a door 11 with door handle 13 in more detail. The door 11 30 may comprise a door handle 13 which is hinged with respect to an outer surface of the door 11, defining a hinge axis which is substantially parallel to the outer surface of the door 11. The door handle is rotatable between a first position in which the door handle 2 is substantially flush with the outer surface of the door 11 and a second position in which the door handle protrudes from the outer surface of the door.
A user may use the door handle 13 to open and close the door 11. In case the door is provided as part of a trolley 3, the user may use the door handle to provide a 5 dragging force to pull the trolley 3 out of its compartment 1, or may provide a lifting force to lift the trolley 3 over an obstacle.
In the current design, the door handle 13 is made out of a 5mm stainless steel ring.
The door handle according to the prior art is relatively uncomfortable, as it is 10 relatively difficult to grasp and tends to rattle.
Summary of the invention
