최근 비디오 정보시대를 맞이하여 컴퓨터 터미날등 각종 영상수상기의 사용이 대중화되고 있으나 종래의 영상수상기는 전원을 공급하고 신호원을 연결하여도 영상신호가 가해지지 않으면 화면이 어두운 상태로 있게 된 구조이기 때문에 영상신호가 가해져야만 어두운 화면에 영상출력이 나타나고 영상신호가 가해지기전에는 정상적으로 통전되고 있어도 신호원이 접합되 있는지의 여부를 화면에 의해 알 수가 없었으며, 여러가지 종류의 신호원이 연결된 구조인 경우에도 영상신호가 가해지기 전에는 어떠한 종류의 신호원이 연결되었는지를 화면에 의해 할 수가 없었다.Recently, the use of various video receivers such as computer terminals has been popularized in the video information age.
