A medical device system for detecting positioning of a medical device at a target site within a patient's vasculature, comprising:
The medical device includes an optical fiber having one or more core fibers, each of the one or more core fibers being multiple distributed along the longitudinal length of the corresponding core fiber. wherein each sensor of said plurality of sensors (i) reflects an optical signal of different spectral width based on the incident light received and (ii) to determine the physical condition of said optical fiber the medical device configured to modify a characteristic of the reflected optical signal used;
a console including one or more processors and a non-transitory computer readable medium containing logic;
The console, when executed by the one or more processors,
providing broadband incident light to the optical fiber;
receiving reflected light signals of different spectral widths of the broadband incident light from at least one or more of the plurality of sensors;
processing the reflected optical signals associated with the plurality of core fibers;
determining that the medical device is positioned at the target site of the patient based on the reflected light signal.
