Abstract
A plurality of subsystems (10) having a plurality of client devices (12), a database (22) of a plurality of font makers (20) connected to the subsystems via a network, and connected to the subsystems and font makers. In the system comprising the master font server (24), information such as the number of clients of each subsystem and the resolution of the printer (14) is stored in advance in the master font server. When a font download is requested from a client device belonging to one of the subsystems, the character code of the font provided by one of the font manufacturers is changed to a character code common to each font manufacturer in the master font server in response to the request. Converted and provided to the client device. The master font server also determines the price of the font from information such as the number of clients stored in advance and the resolution of the printer, presents it to the client, and charges.
Description
The present invention relates to a method and system for enabling acquisition of a desired font that is not installed on a client in a network environment, and a master font server.
In recent years, with the spread of the Internet environment, it has become common to exchange documents with electronic data. Various business forms are now managed and processed as electronic data in forms that have been handled with paper. From the administrative aspect, the introduction of the Basic Resident Register Network System will make application and notification administrative services electronic.
Character data handled by a personal computer (hereinafter referred to as PC) and workstation (hereinafter referred to as WS), that is, fonts, are uniquely encoded based on a standard character code system such as JIS or Shift-JIS. This is the so-called “inner character”. However, in reality, there are many kanji for personal names and place names that are not included in the standard character code system. In particular, there are various “variant characters” that appear to be derived from a single parent character in kanji for personal names. For example, there are “Saisai” and “Ren”. There is also a demand to have company logos and special characters necessary for business as fonts.
Normally, these characters are registered as “external characters” by assigning an arbitrary code to each PC / WS. For this reason, when a document including an external character is exchanged, the external character is not displayed, or an incorrect character is displayed because another external character is registered in the same code.
In addition, tools for producing external characters exist as general ones, but if amateurs make them, the shape of the characters is not good, or if only external characters are registered as image data and used together with internal characters The quality may be poor. In the current document creation environment in which high-quality outline fonts are mounted on a PC / WS and printed at a high resolution, it is desirable that external characters are registered as outline data having the same quality.

FIG. 1 shows a system configuration according to an embodiment of the present invention.

As shown in FIG. 10A, characters can be searched by inputting radical, number of strokes, and reading. Alternatively, a character list can be selected and selected from the list as shown in FIG. When the searched character is double-clicked, the character and its information are displayed and selected as shown in FIG. 10 (3). When the character is selected, the screen of FIG. 10 (4) is displayed and the amount of money is displayed. If another character is to be selected, the screen returns to FIG. 10 (1) again.

Whether downloading from the font server in the subsystem or from the font server of the font maker, the user specifies the font file at the time of downloading, and the character code common to each font maker is assigned to the external characters in advance. Therefore, external characters are automatically installed in the font file and registered. When the font is provided on the medium as in the case of purchasing a font package or placing an order directly with a font maker as in the past, it can be easily copied and used illegally. However, according to the present invention, since the downloaded font is automatically executed until installation in the font file, it is not easy to take out the font data alone, and as a result, the font maker has been nervous about preventing copy of the font. Can also help.
Next, accounting processing will be described with reference to the flowchart of FIG. When a font is downloaded from the
Characters can be produced at low cost, such as those with a large number of strokes, which take time to produce, and those that can be diverted from existing characters. Also, as shown in FIG. 15, a newly produced product has a high unit price, and a product that has a large number of downloads and whose development cost can be recovered can set the unit price low. The unit price for each character is set by the master font server 24 (step 1206).
Even when the same character is downloaded, the charge amount varies depending on the user. As shown in FIG. 16, the amount of money for a user with a large number of clients should be higher than that of a user with a small number of clients. ). As shown in FIG. 17, for example, the price is set by distinguishing between less than 300 dpi, less than 600 dpi, and less than 1200 dpi (step 1214). Such information can be referred to from the user management information of the master font server.
Payment from the user may be a transfer or a debit from a designated account.
There is also a service that can be downloaded freely with a fixed amount of usage.
It is assumed that the user registers user information with the master font server when the system is installed.
On the other hand, the system manufacturer charges the management fee of the master font server to the font manufacturer. This may be a fixed amount or may receive a certain percentage according to the font download.
FIG. 18 shows an overview of the processing flow described so far. First, user information such as the number of clients and printer resolution described with reference to FIG. 13B is sent from the

As described above, the present invention provides the following effects.
(1) The user can access and use an enormous amount of character resources across a plurality of font makers by a simple operation.
(2) The font downloaded from the font maker is first stored in the font server in the system without any special operation by the user, and then downloaded to the user terminal. The character code is also assigned automatically.
(3) By managing the character codes centrally in the master font server, the character codes for external characters can be uniquely determined between font makers and users.
(4) The font maker can sell characters without playing character resources and without incurring operating costs.
(5) Due to the effect of (2), the font manufacturer does not distribute the font alone, so that the font maker does not copy the font illegally.
(6) By performing user management with the master font server, the font maker can obtain an appropriate font usage fee according to the number of clients and the output environment.
(7) Systems constructed with large printers and servers have been equipped with fonts procured by system manufacturers so far, and there was no room for font manufacturers to enter. According to the present invention, the market of font makers can be expanded.
(8) The system manufacturer can provide a comfortable external character environment for users who introduce the system.
